Step by step: Google Maps 2.0.2.0 in GVM N900/N8x0 (770?)
 

1) install Garnet VM; fill in registration, include your email address, they will then send you a link, click the link to dl or install directly on your tablet. It is a .deb file. Pick os2009 for N900, and os2008 for N8x0, or see later post this thread.

2) download GoogleMaps.prc (415,903 kb, version 2.0.2.0) into your tablet, http://www.freewarepalm.com/travel/googlemaps.shtml
Or using a palm/Treo/Tungston or any palm variant, go m.google.com/maps will also do.

No Blazer, no dl!
Access m.google.com/maps within gvm would NOT work.
Upgrade within your GoogleMaps 1.0.29.0 would NOT work.
There are certainly some other ways to do it, that is the way I succeeded.

3) Fire up GVM, install>GoogleMaps.prc

This is the ONLY WORLD map that is bilingual on the map without having to install a separate language pack, and you dont need POI, the whole google is behind it :)

4) There is a way to make it full screen, search for it, that will give a bigger map

5) Do not see how this would not work for 770, will try later...
Edit: Done, works way TOO GOOD for 770, see later post, works just as if it is a N900. I got the feeling that Garnet VM is probably the next life for 770. Currently, my 770 is running

I tried to get the *&#)((*&^%$.prc directly onto the tablet for 2 weeks and failed miserably! You need a palm/Treo or any palm variants running Blazer! Google is nasty.

I just tried with Firefox and User Agent Switcher with the Treo 650 user agent and I was able to download it just fine - no problem at all. Is there something I'm missing here?

No. A Treo or any palm variant will do. I was doing the 'hard way' by dl it from within GVM on the Nokia tablet, it keeps kicking me out.

Yes, 770 works just as well and super fast!

It needs to set setting to 32 Mb heap size. gvm for OS 2008 wont install. I am using gvm for 2007 and running on 2007He. put it to satellite, OMG, my 770 is seeing buildings on hiway, it functions not much different from N900, lol........

How do you know I have a Phd :) ? YUP, I was a chemistry associate professor in my previous life.

I hope you mean the upgrade PR1.2, as the googlemaps thing is super easy, once one got a hold of the .prc. The upgrade PR1.2 is NOT easy for some people, I have tried ALL suggestions in this forum and failed one way or the other, until I tried this one and made it, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...743#post692743, thread #17. This is sad for someone has been upgrade since 770 :(

when i go to the link garnett vm website theres no pr 1.2 version there, theres os2006, os2007, os2008, os2009, so which one do i choose?

me bad....I miss understood you. The PR1.2 is the OS on your tablet. For the GVM, you pick os2009 for N900, os2008 for N8x0, and likely os2007 for 770. If in doubt, on your tablet, go setting>about product will tell you your os.

Umm......I dont think so. It is the regular google maps for palm, it is NOT a port. I found it useful.

1) link location to your contact list
2) 1000X faster, especially when zooming, 1000X save on data use, 1000X save on your minute, 1000X save on your pocket (Dont take this too serious :) )
3) dedicated map use versus a web browser, in general
4) multilingual without having to install a language pack

any tips on downloading garnet vm. when i follow link i have been sent and click to download on n900 it opens deb file in browser instead of downloading

is there a way to get browser to to download not open file?

best bet is use pc , i had same problem with microB so used pc which worked 1st time...

check out screen shots.
First one is maps.google.com on your browser and the second is the GVM.

I personally still would prefer the Browser version.

GVM is very funky and reminds me of an early year 2000 release. It is pixelated, makes beep sounds you would hear from a PC before sound cards existed and just isnt easy to use.

I also couldnt figure out how to get "my location". It kept saying it isnt supported on this device. I have the geolocation enabled.

Update: and only works in portrait mode. Interesting when you're typing an address under the search menu - and the screen is 90 degrees to the keyboard.

I also have the same issue on my n900. Cannot figure out how to get my location enabled as it says it isnt supported on this device.

same problem. it says only the centro supports.
