[ANNOUNCE] Media IM Status Updater - Update IM presence message with song/artist information.

The application was written mainly in Python, probably about 300 lines of code, with a small C library to plugin the configuration UI into the N900's "Settings" application.

Not sure if there are any phones that do this function yet :)

if my msn would work it would be a great apbut i thin that the developers should put there energy in things that almost for most users dont work like IM

Most users? MSN works fine for me and, by my unscientific feel for the forum, most others... what plugin are you using?

try apt-get -f install

that should install the missing dependencies. I believe you need extras-testing enabled for pyside.

Ok...I found it in extras and managed o install, but thethng is I can't find the application anywhere? where should it be?

i have tried them all and it shows me always no contacts.after pidgin update i cant even log in and just search the forum there are many ppl with problems in IM

Working Great!!! I always use this feature in Google Talk in my pc.

but there is one problem after stopping the song in media player the status does not change.

Yes, it indeed does not wipe status message on stop, obviously doing it manually is quite easy. I will add clear on stop for a 0.2 release.

maybe restore old status, instead of clear it, would be better(or choose between these behaviors) ;)

In which case, should I restore status per account, as each account can have a different status message, so it's a bit more complicated to restore it. Not to mention, does it really matter? I can't see anyone really caring if it just clears it :)

It waits for dbus signals notifying a transition of song and the availability of meta data. The source is in /opt/rx/media-im-status-updater/ if you want to have a look ;)

Also, I've been using it myself for the past few days, forcing my handset to use 2G when I'm not actively using the internet as it's the best way to keep IM accounts from draining the battery, which should be the real concern ;)

it only shows up in status area if name of the song and artist is known, it only name of the song is present it does not show, also when listening to internet radio it does not pull info that media player is displaying

What tag information can we show with the app, %t for title track and %a for artist? there is a code for album name or more?
Also i noticed that with this application, skipping tracks very quickly forces my msn account to reset and restart (i'm using pecan and it says "unable to connect to one or more accounts" or whatever, i have my N900 in spanish :D)
Anyway, it's a long-waited app, thanks a lot!

Well, I'll keep that in mind. I'll think about it and I might add that to the next release, currently I've made it just clear for now, though this could change before 0.2

Yeah, quickly skipping, though I didn't see it break anything has always been a concern and I am fixing that, as it's also related to the app only updating if it gets both the track and artist.

Version 0.2 Now in extras-devel and extras-testing:
* Added enable/disabled service option.
* Added clearing of status on stop/pause and service disable.
* Added debouncing to IM status update to ignore track skipping.
* Fixed issue with updating only if track & artist are both available.
* Fixed install/upgrade/uninstall triggers to start and stop service when required.
* Added XSBC-Bugtracker field to debian/control file.

There's a known bug, that means you can't reliably set your status during a song.

And, in related news, I'm currently working on version 0.3, which will introduce monitoring of telepathy in the service. What this basically means is I can keep track of accounts when they come online and update the straight away, as well as implement reverting IM status updates that some one might to mid song, which is probably an edge case, but I might aswell play nice. :)

From there on I'm going to presume the software feature complete, but if I've missed something, please request it now through this thread.

When I click on the configuration menu for Media IM Status Updater, it doesn't do anything, doesn't open a configuration window. When I had 0.1 it did. What can be happening and how can I help you debug it?

As it's written in python + PySide, there can be a rather annoying lag. Does the control panel lock for any considerable time when you try running it? You can run the ui directly from the command line which might show any exceptions that could be happening in the application, that would be a great help, type: $ /opt/rx/media-im-status-updater/media_im_status_updater_ui.py

In theory, but I'll leave that to someone else as my app is specifically meant for use with telepathy. There are pidgin desktop plugins that do the same thing, so it might be easy-ish to port one, though I doubt any use MAFW :)

So, sorry, it's not on my road map :(

Sometimes (actually i don't know the steps to reproduce it) when this app is on, my pecan account enters in a "trying to... disconnect?" loop WHEN THE ACCOUNT IS ALREADY OFF. In the desktop, the offline picture (white circle with the X) pops up and dissapears in a endless loop, even when in offline mode no icon is showed in the status bar. When i click, it seems to be busy loading and need to swith to other status, then offline and save the changes to fix it... for a while :(
Since this i need to switch off the app when i finish to use msn. Bit weird... I think it's introduced in 0.2 version. Hope you can find the bug.
