Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
Hardware wise, the N8 is incredible with the camera and the xenon flash. Also the Maemo OS is amazing too but I'm not too familiar with it and I'm not smarty guy like you guys are making apps and stuff so idk. The only thing that turns me off about the N8 is that it's Symbian^3 which I am not too fond off. So what do you guys think? I don't know too much about the N8 either but I've had the N900 for about 4 months and had the N97 for 2 months before.

Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
I was thinking the same thing. it is not linux but is has an ssh cliant and can rdp. it even suports usb otg out the box. i am hoping it has the pim with task discriptions, you never know nokia droped the ball with the n900. big draback for me is the 640px wide screen. the camers and flash is way cool though.

Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
More importantly remember Symbian^4 launching next year.

Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
well, what dont you like about the n900? i dont write or create any apps, but i cant still enjoy and appreciate others work :)

Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
well I would say its a bit risky,
I mean except the camera nothing seems promising about it, it might just be a n97 v2 I would wait for a new meego device |

"Should I trade the N900 in for an N8...?"
Are you high..??! *Waiting for Meego* . |
Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
For me just stay on n900 lol! Knowing nokia by the time n8 is released there are upcoming mobile devices far greater than n8 already. They just keep on coming so best would be sticking to 1 device for a year or 2 before switching to another one. They won't make another mistake like they did on n95 i mean look at that they packed all the features on n95 and all its successors went down until touch devices were released.

USB OTG is a thing to consider.

I'm able to do an incredible amount of stuff with my N810. With no previous mobile device the N810 has paved the way for me in terms of portability and power. I can remote desktop into my servers and admin everything, do Skype calls, figure out where I am in the world thanks to Maemo Mapper, take notes in Xournal, view PDFs, MSN, AIM, IRC, record audio/video, wardrive, I can even grab emails and their images under Modest without any fuss. The only complaint I have with the device is that it has such little ram and it has no hardware acceleration. These two things cause compatibility issues with stuff that I want to do but the N900 would not be the fix for that. I suspect I would have the same trouble with the N8. Seeing as how I run into another issue that is the OMAP processor, I should probably abandon this platform. There aren't many packages that are compatible with these devices. I treat my N810 as though it were a full computer but it's not. I'll probably go to a full x86/x64 tablet later this Fall. Something old and cheap. |
Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
just waiting for a better device in 2011 man! USB OTG will be standard in the future :D
|
Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
Yeah by the time USB OTG be common there is already a new hype coming. Wireless charging? Screen 3D hologram? Solar powered phone? AI interactivity on phone? LOL would love to have a phone where I can talk and befriend with. Haha

Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
It SHOULD be standard. That doesn't mean it will be. Just look at what Apple has finally gotten around to doing in these past few months for their phone user interface. Anyone can easily hold up the line with something so insignificant by hiding it in plain sight and then announcing new features but that's a software thing.
Personally the majority of my devices dating as far back as 2005 have the master/slave USB feature. MP3 players, MIDs, game devices, storage systems(don't ask), cameras and various others can interact with each other flawlessly. Phones need to catch up. It's the reason I still haven't bought one. If you see a phone that can't commune with a simple flash disk that you've had since 2001, that's the first sign that the device is not for you. Anything that can't keep up with the past is likely not going to be useful to you in the future. Words to consider. |
Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
Yea, I would keep the phones you currently have and wait till next year or so. There's a good amount of newer mobile OS that will be coming out and it'll be better if you wait and see how they function.

Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
I'm gonna probably get the n8, doesn't mean I will get rid of the n900.
If you're looking for one or the other only, I would just wait for it to come out and see what people say about it, and how many apps are available for it. Camera/video samples, etc. |
Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
as far as from what i`ve read the n8 has got a better camera but is technically inferior in every other aspect. from the youtube videos i`ve seen i dont even like the interface, you are very restricted in terms of designing your homescreens etc. no hardware keyboard..
the n8 is just more mainstream and less half-baked, thats about it i guess.. |
Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
ahhh u guys are right. the only thing that attracted m'ewas the hd recording and the 12 mp camera. but i should wait for meego huh? but sometimes nokia releases great hardware on not so good OS and vice versa but im sticking with Nokia since im comfortable and i dont wanna buy these mainstream crap phones they advertise and everyone has. i wanna be unique. i love when people ask what my phone is or what it does. so i hope nokia releases a meego os with a nice phone that goes with it!
till then ill keep my 900 its not that i dont like it, its just that im the type of person who always needs better. but i guess the n8 isnt it yet. oh well. i love my n900 thanks guys. |
Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
there's a rumor about a meego device coming in winter. 12 MP with 720p video recording, 4" cap AMOLED display and better CPU-RAM-GPU. i'm waiting for that.

Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
Get Motorola Shadow/Xtreme/Whatever in Q3, if it's available in your country. Since you are not confident at all about S^3 why not switch to Android.... It's very satisfying to use even if in pre-production status.... and if rumored is correct will get Froyo, though the device I played with had 2.1 instead.
If you can wait longer, then definitely suggest you wait for Meego... even if Meego is not what you want, you will have more choices by then since iPhone4 and newer Android devices are out. |
Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
i have 2 questions about N8
- what version of flash does it support? - what size is the battery?? thanks |
Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
n8 has flashlite 4.0 equivalent to flash player 9

Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
well then the N8 will need flash 10.1 in future, yes? if websites are "upgrading" to it???
|
Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
I just don't like the OS of N8, am in love with maemo.
|
Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
well, if symbian is ok for you, go with the n8.
if you want a maemo-style OS, then be strong and wait for the meego-device :) |

Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
Will the N8 be capable of running "current" Symbian apps or is the new OS require new code? Sux that my 900 does everything I need/want, save for slingmobile.

n8 = symbian & QT applications symbian^4 = QT applications only and as they say better interface. :( It's like symbian^3 is the fusion state of Goku and Vegetta while symbian^4 is Goku alone :p simple as that :D |
Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
The N8 comes with Flash Lite 4, which supports Flash 10.1.
Symbian can do a lot of the things that Maemo can that I have seen mentioned in this thread (RDP, SSH, etc) there is a lot of software for it, you just need to look. About hardware, the CPU is an ARM11 at 600+ MHz, which for Symbian it is decent; but the GPU is a very powerful Broadcom, from what I hear, it is one of the most powerful in a mobile right now. I would wait for year's end to see the new MeeGo device. |
Re: Should I trade the N900 in for an N8 or wait for a better phone?
btw i think the motorola milestone should be under consideration if you need a camera phone http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/...th-8mp-camera/
