Keyboard wearing badly?
Wonder if any one else is having problems with the paint on the keyboard coming off already?
The blue arrow on mine's starting to wear thru now, and is pretty anoying for a few month old hadnset! |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
Mine's perfect, even with quite heavy usage for months.
|
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
Nope, don't use the keyboard extremely much though. Some of my keys are clicking when you press on the edge of them, though :( I should probably get it fixed...
|
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
same problem here.
started with space key. now also part of the paint is gone on e r t u i delete a h l n m and . have to hand it in soon to get it fixed. i got a replacement phone in beginning of march. after my usb connector broke after 3 weeks use. and i had to fight with nokia for 7 weeks until they fixed it with a replacement phone. so a little worried to give that crap nokia company my mobile again, 7 weeks to repair is a little long... i use my keyboard quite a lot. but i also did for years on my previous phone sonyericsson p1i and keys are still fine... |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
i guess its beyond dispute that most part of the n900 is crap, e.g. the frame become loose after a few months, hence physical clicks when y ou tap screen. bottom half frame clicks when you press in, feels dead cheap. slider holds up for about 3months then it begins to break itself down. oh yea forgot to mention the world famous fragile usb plug, on a 500pounds device , we thank nokia for these surprising extra features.

Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
blue arrow also wearing off... at least it replaceable I guess

About the only problem I may have is I do get the clicking of the frame sometimes but that is not at all unusual for a resistive touchscreen suspended over the LCD rather than sat flush on it, a resistive screen will always flex when positioned like that with a high chance it will audibly click. Does it actually cause any malfunction of the device? Not that I am aware of. My USB port is fine (though I do worry about it), my slider is a lot more loose than it was but still fine IMO and no paint is coming off the keys. I would argue that if paint is coming off yours it might be that you aren't washing your hands enough. Oils and whatever else you might have on your fingers could be damaging the paint, although again perhaps a few N900s are defective. Heck, my iPod Touch is far worse, the glue holding the glass panel on became unstuck in the bottom right corner making it no longer flush with the frame, after I only had it a week. If you catch it wrong it can be quite sharp and there are several reports of the same thing on the Internet. It doesn't mean they are ALL defective though. Oh wait, my N900 screen is scratched too that MUST be Nokias fault, not that I accidentally put it in the same pocket as my asthma inhaler which scratched it! |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
No problems. Heavy usage here - NEVER used the onscreen kb in my life. Wouldn't even know where to find it. All physical keys are in perfect condition. You guys got long nails? ;)
|
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
wearing off here, but i have bit weird habit of writing with my nails :|
|
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
no problems here, but a friend had.
He got a new keyboard for free. edit: thats so strange! I was one of the firsts that had the N900. And I didn't have had any problems. no reboot loops, no dead pixel, no loose usb port, no weared off keyboard. what I'm doing wrong?? |

My advise refer to your local purchasing center, & let them change it with original keyboard. |

It depends on the environment you live in and what you expose the N900 to I guess. I've had mine since 28/12 (about 6 months) and the keypad is still the same as it was |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
3000 texts a month here and NO wear at all on keyboard.....

Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
A friend has an N900 and his keys are wearing.. He's owned his slightly less time than I have but his keys are shiny, where as mine are matte..
his have started to wear, its almost like the underside of the screen is rubbing against them.. It's very strange to compare them side by side.. his keyboard looks more like an E90's in texture (or at least my old E90) He treats his N900 with far more respect than I do.. mine is a bit of a dirty work horse.. so it is strange that his keyboard seems to be suffering.. Not all N900s are built the same.. maybe there is a very slight difference in keyboard quality.. a dodgy batch perhaps.. |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
I have had mine since January and the letter 'e' is completely worn through on keyboard. But they say its the most commonly used letter in the alphabet.
Also the 'a' and 't' are starting to go. |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
Another thread worthless without pictures...
I havent had any issues with my keyboard and i've had my n900 since november. I use my keyboard heavily but I always make sure my hands are clean before I use it. All my keys still have their original matte finish |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
my keypad wear is located on both F and J where the - is (the bumps or marks that are not so useful). i can see light on edges. so far, thats it.

Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
maybe it depends on the source of your N900s? i have been using mine for 6 months now, no rattling, anything loose or paint worn out, mine is made in Korea and it shipped from the Netherlands, ordered from Nokia's UK website. But it could be the sweat from your fingers with a lot of sun, maybeeee?

maybe not, i know someone who can send 1000 sms in 2 days. |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
I'm living on the texting capital lol! I text more than 1000+ texts per day. That's because call here is expensive while text is very cheap and has many unlimited plans.

Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
blue arrow key is the only key wearing on mine too. I often hold it with my nails which could be causing the wear.
how would I replace it if it came to that? |

Anyways owned the device since the first day it was available(something like 12th of December?) and i have used virtual keyboard once(really), plus i write daily using N900.... example this post. :) In that sense i'm very surprised that there is any wearing and that it haven't happened to me yet. |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
is there any made in china N900s?
|
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
Mine are holding up amazingly well. They still look like new.
|
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
i havent noticed a single weardown of any of the mentioned things in this thread. its still in mint condition.
however, one scary thing i noticed the first days while using the N900: the N900 stylus/pen scratched the screen... ive used touchscreen phones for 7 years and have never managed to scratch the screen of any of those phones with their pencils. i thought that maybe the pen is defect and have some sharp edges, so i rotated it a little, and still the same... i got one really serious scratch and one and a couple of smaller ones by using the pen - and i never use excessive force. anyway, i bought a screen protector and now the problem is completly gone :) |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
please those with problems:
check if your keyboard does have a matte or glossy finish. please check when it was made and from where you got it. those without problems: the same. my n900 without any kind of problems: preordered in september 2009 from Nokia Germany website. got it late November or December (can't remember anymore) made in Korea, shipped via netherlands. matte keyboard finish. |

http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/7751/n900keybwear.png But I have bit too long fingernails and quite often i type with nails :| Itīs rather stupid because its faster to type with finger tips. I do not know why i have sometimes do that...maybe orientation of my hands while keeping n900 on both hands makes me type with nails.. |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
Wtf!
Mine are also as good as new, but yours look dramatically worn out. I don't want to come anywhere near your fingernails then :P |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
For me only the plastic which is a bit under the keyboard comes a bit up, simply a small quality issue but nothing serious.
|
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
maybe the first batches of N900s are higher quality than the second ones?
|
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
Ordered mine in january, korean, matte keyboard.
The shift-key is wearing off. Does anybody know where to buy a new keyboard or single letters? |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
here you go mate http://www.blueunplugged.com/p.aspx?p=140503 and http://www.mytrendyphone.com/shop/no...ad-23137p.html
its a QWERTZ keyboard, but you might find a way to take one of the keys and replace it, cheers :D |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
You guys must of got Sand Paper fingers :D
Or may be a guitarist? I got to say I got mine since the first shipping period. The keyboard still good but sometimes I get the random click on screen when I pressed on it. But after a little tighten with the screws, all normal now. |

On mine going strong 6 months and still like brand new. |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
Igo keyboard should be compatible - very useful in the long-term for heavy mailers.
If you don't trim your nails often then the screen also will be losing its effectiveness - if you seldom use the stylus ['] anyway. |

Got mine in February 2010 via Amazon. Keyboard has seen little to moderate use (i.e. for sending mails and entering URLs whenever no "bigger" device had been around; configuration is done mainly from remote via ssh).
First button started wearing off 2 weeks ago, second to follow this week. It gets especially annoying when the light is dim, as the background LEDs shine through the holes. |
Re: Keyboard wearing badly?
My shift key started losing its coating when my N900 was only a few weeks old. Not as drastic as BigLebowski's (yet).
