What will you buy next?

After having an n900 for half a year i've loved and hated it. So basically with new smartphones coming out this year I was wondering whether people will be sticking with Nokia or moving to Apple or Andriod?

Personally I love the look and specs of the HTC Evo 4g unfortunatly it doesn't look like it'l be coming to the UK.

Re: What will you buy next?

looking at the new phones (iphone 4, n8 etc) it makes the n900 screen look abit small somehow, but ill probably get the n9 depending how good meego is

Re: What will you buy next?

right now i am using n900 + e72

if n8 virtual keyboard is good enough I will probably move to that device and then meego-harmattan device if it actually comes out :)

probably going to pick up a used nexus one or other relatively modern android as well just for testing as I now have quite a few android users

Re: What will you buy next?

I'll be keeping my N900 for a while yet. By the time I'm ready to shell out hundreds of dollars for a phone again there will be some meego phones for me to look into.

Re: What will you buy next?

It hasn't been made yet.;)

I can only say with certainty that it won't be an Apple or Microsoft device.

Re: What will you buy next?

I already bought it, but its in a perpetual 2 month wait cycle ;)

Re: What will you buy next?

I usually buy every 'milestone' device from each camps, just to keep abreast and follow what everyone's been doing and to see and understand the latest trends.. take what's good from them and also learn the pitfalls of the not-so-successful implementations of good ideas..

I keep the ones that are suitable for my needs and can be integrated easily to my workflow... or those with significantly interesting/curious features to play with.. the rest, I pass on other ppl. But ... looking at Nokia's development lately, I think it's safe to pass on their next few releases ...

Wake me up when MeeGo's in town :)

Next purchase: iPhone 4

Re: What will you buy next?

this is hard......im building a custom deck in "magic: the gathering" TCG and now that the teaser video of N9 came, it made me think twice and pick what will be first between an $800 card deck and the new N-series.

but overall, i love my n900, the most powerful and hackable device i ever had.....

Re: What will you buy next?

I'm afraid a long time will pass before there will be a device for me, because it must have pixel-accurate touch screen and almost every device in the near future tends to have a capacitive one for comfortable use with sausage-like fingers. And it must be an open linux device, not just java one like androids.
In my opinion, the only features that are missing in the N900 is a magnetic compass and water-resistance.:)

I am loving n900, but I need a spare device for developing, so I will buy the next maemo/meego nokia that will come out.

Waiting for N9, unless it is just rumor or fake news

I'm pretty suprised that alot of people are still looking to buy the next Nokia models especially with all the concerns over ditching Maemo and slow updates.

I've said it before.. I'll say it again.

I may have disagreements with how Nokia has run their devices in the past... but so far: They have consistently been releasing devices that are the best for me at the time I need them.

Re: What will you buy next?

As much as I hate Nokia management style, poor communication skills and customer abandon, I think I'm stuck with whatever GNU/Linux they have. I might complain about the N900, but the truth is, no device does anything close to what it does. I can ssh to it and use every GNU/Linux command, activate and deactivate things with dbus, configure stuff with gconftool-2, start apps, play movies and the like; I can use a full-fledged spreadsheet like gnumeric or openoffice.org calc or word processor like openoffice.org writer or abiword; I can easily play old games that I loved like Dune, Duke Nukem 3D and Descent, even Quake III! I can completely change and customize the desktop and I can install multiple operating systems on it with no fear, because it's virtually unbrickable due to its flashing capabilities. I can't think of too many things my friends with their very advanced Android or iPhone 3GS devices can do that I can't, save a few things like Flash 10.1 or proprietary protocol support (like LEAP authentication for wifi).

And all this while being open-source. I mean, Maemo 5 may not be 100% open-source, but due to the laziness of Nokia with proprietary arrangements like Ovi Store, most software for the N900 is free as in free speech, and that is a Good Thing™. Did you guys ever notice that this might be a huge advantage in the long run, due to reuse of components and code? Android's ecosystem has a few things that are gratis, but not many are FLOSS. iPhone's ecosystem is much worse, everything is closed tight.

That being said, I WILL buy the next meego device that comes with a physical keyboard and a touchscreen. I simply have no option due to the extent I use my N900 for and how much I love open source. If I buy an Android or whatever device, I know my experience will be much poorer.

Re: What will you buy next?

I'm really happy with my n900 does everything I need. Will wait to see what new meego device is like when it's released.

i'm tempted to try android next, maybe droid 2. kinda curious to try developing something for android for comparison. though I have no idea what yet..
iin any case it's unlikely to be for another 6 months in which time anything could happen

nokia is not worse than other vendors. still i hate them :) and will still buy a new open source device from them in the future.

I have 2 N900s so will stick with those until they stop working. I think it is the last of its kind.

Re: What will you buy next?

iPhone 4, I think I'm pretty much done with the Nokia N900, it disappointed me a bit to be honest..not that I hate it, but I don't feel like Nokia is supporting it that much, it's more like the maemo community, this community, OUR community is supporting the N900 now.

Wow, that sounds like a presidential speech! =)

Next? Generally? I need a new blender. ;o)

On topic - I'll see what Meego brings. Bought the N900 without research on a whim and haven't been disappointed coming from a 5800. Plus I've already got spare batterys to fuel the N900 :-p

Bought the missus an iPhone 3GS as it suits her needs and was a good upgrade from 5800.

Penguinbait plays "demonic tutor" and pulls out a "fork" from his deck, and plays it on gabby131 allowing the purchase of both a new nseries and a new MTG deck with the same 800$

you can thank me later :D:D

Re: What will you buy next?

I used my N6230 until it stopped charging its own internal battery. Well, technically, that's when I started looking a new phones, and decided on the FreeRunner. Then used the 6230 while trying to get the FreeRunner to work, then saw the N900, and continued using the 6230 while waiting for that to ship. :)

So, The N900 will probably follow a similar path. I'll use it until it's either dead or dying, and/or until it no longer can be used for some other technical reason, before looking for another.

Re: What will you buy next?

probably the andriod phone directly released by Google (i.e. successor to the nexus whenver I buy my next phone)

i like customisation but do not have the time required to fix the n900 up constantly as I have to work for a living.

so i will settle for droid.

for guys who like the open "hacking" nature of the n900, its no surprise they will buy nokia again as they do not need support and there are no good alternatives with the same open nature on the market now.

I think so too. I am really attracted to the N8 and its camera, but ive had my breakup with symbian, and dont think i could leave a resistive screen HW keyboard maemo computer for a capacitive touchscreen only phone...

I don't buy expensive toys like this often... I'll probably cherish my n900 for a long time... I am interested in the N9, hardware keyboard. Too bad the screen wont be resistive :(

Re: What will you buy next?

I'll use this N900 until it dies. Then, I'll look for an unlocked Android phone. It'll likely be mature enough with suitable hardware that's the like of the N900. We'll see. Until then, I LOVE my N900... But it doesn't pain to dream.
