gps lock in 2 seconds !!!!!!!

whenever i use my gps on n900 it takes mins or hours to get gps lock, i did some search today as i have installed a new app from ovi store which was very cool and free.

i changed the location settings from supl.nokia.com to supl.google.com and wonder i got gps lock in 2 seconds (with wifi) whereas it toook almost 30 to 40 mins and never got gps lock.

thought of sharing with the community as i found this was very useful. the new app from ovi store was also very cool and great !!!!!@try it out

:)

happy and proud n900 user as always........

the new app in OVI store was EARTHMOVER, this does not do anything with the gps settings. it finds lot of places like free wifi, hotels and more which is very useful.

i did some search here but didn't find the solution here for the gps settingsas i found in some blog and it was working fine i thought to share here. if it is re post i apologize and admins please delete my thread.

Thanks,

RR

I use it:) it has enough features for my use case

@op, I also have the setting pointing to google, but unfortunately, my lock rate is still slow(around 2 to 3 minutes) and it is with GPSJinni running.

well, if you only go to Settings--> Location
enable Network positioning and change the server to " supl.google.com"

GPS lock was in 2 secs.. I haven't tried navigating or anything though..

great stuff!!

Does this work with AGPS on the N810? I see no place to put the server address...

Probably because it already had what it needed to get from the network anyway. A-GPS information is typically valid for an hour or two.

Additional info: I do NOT have a SIM card installed to my N900; I only have a set of map downloaded.on the unit.; so I guess one can't expect quick performance with my type of setup. Prior to PR1.2, my unit would take what feel likes forever(ie. more than 10min) to lock. The GPSJinni was/is an wonderful for my need. YMMV.

Cheers,

It's a bit lame having to use the network positioning to get a lock within an hour! I have found the gps on the n900 to be a bit of an embarrassment, the other day I tried to use it and a friend who has an iphone was there in seconds! I gave up.

What would solution be if there was zero network cover?

 That's surprising to me. I do not use aGPS and when I'm outside, normally I get a fix in a minute or two, when I'm not moving. Sometimes less. Only if I'm moving (fast) before I got the fix it can take up to 10 minutes. If you are between skyscrapers or in an forrest, it also can take longer. I use it mostly on my motorcycle with mappero.

Because US adds noise to the reading for civilian GPS usage.

I think this is more related to the fact that the location was based only on A-GPS reading (estimate based on cell towers) and there was no real GPS satellite lock. A-GPS location is a really rough estimate.

No, they stopped doing that in 2000, that made the civilian GPS market viable. Thank Bill Clinton for that.

Inside my house, GPS positions me on the opposite side of the road sometimes. That'll be about 30m away. That's proper GPS with a few satellites locked, according to the GPS diagnostic application. When it's only based on cell towers it's usually 300-500m off.

Usually it's more accurate, but sometimes it does go quite far off. I've seen it occasionally when driving, too - the car is positioned off the side of the road, passing through houses :)

This is quite normal -- inside a building, you usually only get indirect signals that have been bounced once or several times, which will of course add delays. Since GPS uses signal timing to calculate your position, this will mess with the result.

GPS precision varies with a lot of factors. Read up on DOP (Dilution Of Precision) to get all the sordid details ;) -- satellite constellation is one of them. If you drove the same route on a different time of day and/or another day a few weeks later, the reading might be spot on. This is where D-GPS (Differential GPS) comes in with receivers capable of it.

Chris.
