Samsung Galaxy S
I have to Say I'm very impressed when I heard about this phone and I will probably buy because all sign point to the phone coming to T-Mobile USA. Specs we all want specs ok 1ghz Samsung processor, 5mp camera that shoots hd video but no flash in the camera, 521mb of ram, front facing camera however us versions don't have this, 4 inch super amoled display 800x480, and Android 2.1 with Touchwiz 3.0. My only problems with the Galaxy S would be the touchwiz ui makes it to weird looking and lack of flash in the camera. I have always thought of Touch Wiz as a iPhone and Android got drunk and had an unholy child and there you go it very iPhonish and very Androidish to but there should be a way to disable TouchWiz. http://www.cellphonesmarket.com/news...oid-Phones.jpg
Engadget http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/s...axy-s-preview/ What do you guys think. |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S
touchwiz is ok to me, but "galaxy s" sounds like its a cut-down version of the galaxy...?!
anyway, now that i have a n900, i dont see myself buying a phone with hardware keyboard anytime again. though samsung wave is sexy as hell. btw i had a samsung jet before and i really liked it, especially the built-in panorama-function of the camera. does this one has this as well? |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S
My workmate who sits next to me got one. (in Australia)
Been playing with it. My 2cents: - Really vibrant and very nice size screen. Wacthing videos is justs so much better on it than my N900. The 0.5" size is huge. - It plays 720P videos downloaded off the net perfectly. 1280x720 resolution MKV files with H264 and AC3 plays butter smooth. Same with 720P xvid videos with AC3. Haven't tried ones with DTS yet. Also, the videos are crystal clear. Has option of stretch to screen or keep ratio. So as a video player on the go, it can't be beat nearly. - Games play with amazing framerate. Man, wish N900 had some decent proper 3D games. I guess we'll never get them. Well, maybe 1 or 2. Whoopee. - Supports so many input languages out of the box. Nearly all european and asian languages. Even handwriting recognition for Korean out of the box. Awesome. Nokia needs to learn from this. Anyways. It's a great Android device. Probably the best one out there currently. In terms of hardware, it is the best. This makes me itchy to find out what we'll get to see end of this year and next year. Bring on the super phones! btw, seen the HTC HD3 specs? 1280x800 4.5" display! wow. Where is Nokia's super duper amazing next-gen phone?!?! Nokia needs to step up. |

But considering Qualcomm annouced dual core Snapdragon CPUs that can do 1080p video recording/playback and that Android 3.0 has support for 1280x760 res displays, I can't imagine it being any worse for our future phones. Looking at Galaxy S, Samsung will have something as good or better than that fake HD3 up their sleeves already. |

Considering you are at TMO, you aren't average customers either. :p These phones are not cheap. Are high end phones generally for the upper end of the market or for tech savvy people. Although I can say that Galaxy S is definitely mum-friendly also while N900 is not as much. Well, I still prefer my N900 but Galaxy S definitely has its stronger points that N900 just cannot match. |

Anyways. Specs are important. Apple touts their hardware specs with super fancy words and numbers. They know that people care about the numbers even if they don't know what they actually mean in the real world. Works wonders in sales of computers and digital cameras as well. Apple did wonders to make the iPhone a "cool" thing to have and become a trend setter. Now many buy it even if it's inferior in so many ways. But there are many who still care. So you can't simply group the "average consumers" to one or the other. There are many types of average consumers out there still. |

Oh and what is better, T-Mobile Vibrant unlocked for 450 and 55 for unlimited internet or At&t Captivate locked for 200 and 55 for 200mb per month? Is the extra 250 dollars worth unlimited internet, because I mostly will be staying in my WiFi blanketed campus most of the time, but don't want to be screwed when I leave |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S
Bought one today and it is pretty nice.
Screen is awesome. Not big fan of soft kb but swype is pretty nice Super thin after info using my n900 The samsung touchui is not too bad. If I can get root might think about keeping it |

I am playing with one. The screen is amazing but the phone feels cheap.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S
It felt pretty solid to me. I just couldn't get past that iPhoney TouchWiz interface. If it had Sense or whatever form of blur that's on the Droid X, I'd jump for it in a heartbeat

Re: Samsung Galaxy S
Afew more notes after using it for bit:
Camera sucks in low light compared to n900 but it foes do 720p video. In full light pictures are comparable. Has tv out duplicate mode although playing the included avatar movie gave tv out npt supported supposedly becUse of drm I c an t type as we'll On this thing either :) Web surfing is quite fast. IREALLY miss the n900 method of just clicking blank area to go back. Hate having to hit a specific spot everytime |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S
I saw the Avatar thing, the quality was really impressive

Re: Samsung Galaxy S

one odd thing is that when i went in to the store the rep wanted to change my data plan to an android one??? i was like whatever just give me the phone, dont touch my account(i was paying retail) sure enough i got home and popped in same sim from n900 and internet worked fine straightaway. weird |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S
I personally like the Galaxy Virtual Keyboard though. I think that what Maemo5 keyboard should be like. Long press for Number and sWipable.

i'd be willing to pay full price if i was able to stay with my t-zones plan if i were you i'd check your data plan on tmo website, sometimes they upgrade you automaticly when they detect an android phone/smart phone |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S
This one is a waste with a 5Mp camera Without any sort of flash. Why on earth would you built a phone without flash now a day? Epic failure!
|
Re: Samsung Galaxy S
Picked up a Vibrant (T-Mobile's Galaxy S) and am absolutely loving it so far. The one thing that would make it perfect however, would be the ability to dual boot with Maemo! Why oh why can't there be an n900 with this form factor

Re: Samsung Galaxy S
Galaxy A S S :D

Re: Samsung Galaxy S
man, i actually tried this phone out yesterday at a Radio Shack and boy i am VERY impressed with what samsung did. The screen alone is a selling point. The phone is VERY light and feels like you are holding a paper. If only this phone had a Front Facing Camera i would have bought it. Ohh this phone was very fast!

Things i don't like is the total lack of flash(in browser), but again hoping for that 2.2. Build quality is pretty weak. N900 at least got metal and feels sturdy. Plus i just can't get me to love the virtual qwerty. All that said it's amazing phone. Thought looking at buying the meego phone next to it this year. |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S
after using the vibrant variant of the galaxy S for the past three days, I just have to go back to my n900 for daily work use. I will keep the vibrant for surfing on wifi at home tablet style as well as media player/gamepad for the kids.
here are my pros and cons for n900 vs vibrant from MY OWN viewpoint and use case: Vibrant wins: screen is almost unbelievable browsing over wifi or 3g is way faster at rendering, zooming to divs and spans works better, as does reflowing sites that don't even support it email client is way better for most text entry either the andoid keyboard or the swype one are great. video recorder does 1280x720 phone dialer/app is better office suite is free and better interface is very fast and super smooth market works way better than ovi store n900 wins: always connected, whether rtcom or pidgin, there is nothing I found in android that can keep me connected to my xmpp server basically no matter what. I tried all of the xmpp or jabber clients I could find in market. Also contact shortcuts on desktop with availability indicator i now know is very valuable timesaver multitasking, I just like the desktop style multitasking of n900 better. I am sure there are third party task managers in android that might be able to replicate some of that, but I prefer it at a lower level than an app. ssh sessions in xterm are WAY faster for me with a hardware keyboard. i tried various of the available android ssh clients and nothing clicked for me n900 has dual led flash that can also be used as a flashlight. I use the flashlight a surprising amount :) syncml support is better and free(syncevolution) no angry birds for android :) yet, at least. while the android market works way better, for me, having apt and understanding what is going on behind the scenes I like better. |

No, I already had smartphone data, but they switched it to android data, same price. The smartphone data did work in the android phone and then it didn't after about a day, so I switched to android data and now it works in both andoird phone and n900. Same epc.tmobile.com so i don't know what the difference is, probably some google spying :) I don't really care about trying to get some kind of super cheap plan, I would just like if you have data, it works in any phone no matter what. I like to swap sims in phones all the time. |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S
I just bought the att version, the captivate 5 minutes ago and boy its fast. The haptic feedback is so much better than what i got with my 5800XM and on the N900. I'm still figuring out Android. It's harder than the transition from iOS to Maemo5... I guess I will be fine by the end of the day.

FWIW, my n900 feels more sold though "plasticy" than the HTC TP2 I was looking at. TP2 seemed like it would fall apart if you looked at it wrong. |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S
Seriously .. captivate ROCKS! dunno why they gave us that shitty GSM version .. it's damn ugly !
Vibrant < Facsinate < GSM < Epic4G < CAPTIVATE ! |

Rules of thumb. +/- 3dB is double or half power +/- 6dB is quadruple or quarter power +/- 10dB is 10X or 1/10 power +/- 20dB is 100X or 1/100 power etc. Actually fun stuff to work with as you don't have to remember log tables:D So, plastic is mostly transparent to RF and metal will reflect or re-radiate RF. Take care. |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S
I picked one up over the weekend and just saying "Me too" on many of the positive comments.
However, I did mistakenly assume there was a native Skype client. Well, I guess there is, but it is exclusive to Verizon. While I'm very happy overall with T-Mobile, their coverage sucks in my living room. To get around this I set up a Skype-in number and forward incoming TMO calls to it when the phone isn't registered on the cell network. This works surprisingly well, and on the N900, it is of course seamless. I didn't expect that level of integration, but at least make an app available (that isn't crippled to not allow WiFi calls). That's the biggest disappointment. I think the lousy state of podcast clients is another, and I'm a bit surprised to see how much I'm missing Weave sync bookmarks and tabs. I'd also like to see better reviews on the marketplace. Everything is either ****** best app ever penned by humans! or * bricked my phone, with no real reviews. I guess that's something that will come in time, but it shows that a lot of the comments are from 1st time smartphone users. The navigation is OK, but going through a dead zone showed the main weakness. The compass seems to be worthless, and I've read several comments on the nets about that as well. The radio on the N900 seems to be a little better, and the N900 does a much better job switching from 3G/Cellular radio to WiFi. So I'm going to keep it and switch the simcard when the mood strikes. All the complaints seem to go away when the big bright screen lights up. :p And I've already downloaded several books on the Kindle app, and I can already tell that's going to get expensive real soon. Once I can get Audible books again, I may be able to switch permanently, but for now I need an automatic podcast client, and GPodder is the best I've found. |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S
I have had the samsung vibrant for a week and I am really liking it so far. Had to get used to our coming from my n900, I going tp keep my n900 and use it over wifi. The camera is good and has night mode which takes great pics in low light.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S
I just ordered the Galaxy S. Should arrive on tuesday. Im so excited :D

Re: Samsung Galaxy S
I like the samsung vibrant better to me it's nearly perfect as a android phone. some things bother me though:
the back panel looks too plasticy/cheap (captivate back panel better) i've been seeing huge reception drops (though no dropped calls) for both the captivate and vibrant on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dogM4Wu51tc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLJPMcPUi7E But on the brightside it's still a great phone no dropped bars even with 0 bars has the humming bird 1gh cpu (similar to the one samsung manufactures for iphone) great graphics performance a really polished OS with less problems than the captivate I believe the captivate and vibrant will erode the consumer base of the iphone, =P and rightfully so. It's everything the iphone is and better, more polished os, simple UI, bigger screen, and with more features such as flash video |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S
One of the dealbreakers for me was the lack of a notification LED. There is an app that has a random moving red dot for notification purposes, but crikies....
I have also been hearing problems with media player issues-but the inclusion of a DLNA clinet is a win in my book. I still think the N900 works for me as a daily driver. |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S
OI just installed psx (playstation)emulator on my vibrant, it flies with no lag. The phone is awesome for gaming, was playing metal gear solid and mortal combat 4. I am enjoying the vibrant, I rooted it and now just waiting on custom roms. If anyone is looking for a new device, I recommended the galaxy s. I still enjoy using my n900 but the vibrant is my primary.
