How to turn OFF the red LED when recording video???

Guys, need urgent help here.

When recording a video with N900 on the back side of the device the red LED light is constantly lighting. That sucks tremendously and I need to disable it. In the setting of the video recorder I couldn't find any options to accomplish my goal.

How to do that? Is there any hidden option? Or is there any hack or an app to do that?

Thanks!

Re: How to turn OFF the red LED when recording video???

There is a program called "LIVE FOCUS." You get the option to disable red light.

Re: How to turn OFF the red LED when recording video???

There's a status menu applet called Live Focus that does this. It's in Extras-Testing.

Try searching: It's the second result if you search "How to turn off red LED."

Re: How to turn OFF the red LED when recording video???

holly crap, I went to this page and downloaded the lfocus_0.528-4_all.deb file to the device. Then tried to install it and the installer barked that he cannot install it because there are some dependencies with another packages which are not yet installed.

Help!

Go to App Manager and download and look for LIVE FOCUS. Make sure you enable repository. To enable it the easy way go
http://repository.maemo.org/ and click on "install"
of Fremantle Extra and Fremantle Extra Testing and Fremantle Extra-devel

Then come back to App Manager and check download and look for Live FOCUS.

This way...you don't have to look for dependencies.

Annoying thing about live focus, is that it keeps popping up at the bottom when your in the camera app, have to press screen to get rid of it every time

Installed Fremantle Extras and Fremantle Extra-devel. The Fremantle Extra-devel cannot be fetched though (some repo's server problem). Couldn't find the installation link for the Fremantle Extras Testing repo, from repository.maemo.org you can just browse it, but not install.

Still there is no Live Focus app in the app manager. BTW, the search function is missing BADLY in the app manager.

Re: How to turn OFF the red LED when recording video???

also you can modify the camera recorder light pattern using "led patterns"

You can not find it under App Manager "download" list? I thought it was there.

This is actually a great tip, I installed and used this app to disable the red LED during the recording of videos... BUT I was talking about desabling the red light on the BACK SIDE of the device (where the photo flash normally resides)! Any solution to that problem? BTW, how can I revert my changes done with the LED Patterns Editor?

uhh interesting, i didn't know there's an orange/red LED on the other side. we thought you meant the red one for when the OTHER video camera is recording...
There's a button to restore your settings right in the LED patterns editor, which you would see if you tried looking, never mind the search function of the message board. I mean, seriously, what a silly question. "CLICK THE BUTTON THAT SAYS RESTORE ORIGINAL PATTERNS TO RESTORE ORIGINAL PATTERNS"

Before you ask, you can click "Save" to Save as well!!

Enable the Extras-Testing repository; it's in there.

http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-testing

Afaik, there's a function in the LED Patterns applet that allows you to revert to the original patterns; it might be the Extras-Devel version though.

http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-devel

A note about extras-testing and extras-devel: Refrain from updating or installing applications from there unless you have a clear goal (i.e. don't go on a shopping spree), because as the names imply, applications in those repositories are still in testing or development phase.

Edit:

The front LED (the one for notifications) is supposed to light up red when the front camera is being used, according to the LED patterns in mce.ini, but yeah, still out of context.

Edit 2: It's a very bad idea to download a .deb from the package listing and install it manually. That's only there as a (close to) last resort or for testing/development purposes.

First of all, don't waste my time making pointless posts. Secondly, there is no restore option (just looked again - no such button). Thirdly, get a life and a girlfriend/wife and put your libido in that direction, instead of putting drama into a technical internet forum!

Keep the personal attacks out. It's against the terms of use and forum rules.

If you read my post (which I'm sure you did, since you clicked thanks), the function's in either the extras-devel or extras-testing version of the software. I only said "never mind" because I assumed Creamy Goodness was talking about the Extras version.

(And I can confirm there is such a button.)

If the repo list can't be fetched, then you're missing all the apps from that repo (including ones on there, like live focus). Try refreshing. I've just refreshed mine and it work, so if yours persists in not refreshing you may want to check the settings, or delete/re-install it.

As for searching, it works just like contacts. In the app manager list (I usually go to the "All" list) just start typing the name of the app you're looking for. It will pair down the list to package with what you typed in the title or short description. :)

he attacks, I responded. I'm not interested in flame wars of any kind, I'm here to learn more about maemo and N900 and to find answers for my questions. If someone has nothing to say about the subject - he/she should shut up - it's that simple. Let's end this useless discussion right now.

Re: How to turn OFF the red LED when recording video???

It's not really pointless, I'm just trying to discourage you from asking stupid questions, where stupid is defined as "something that is either obvious or asked so many times you can type it into the search box instead".

Any idea how annoying it is to come here to see "what's new" and it's just 20 topics with the same old crap questions from yesterday? "Why is Nokia bad"?. "How do I edit a file?". "I want to talk about apple."

Anyways, for what it's worth, I'm sorry I assumed you are blind and stupid, I didn't think that maybe we had different versions of the same app, and yours is missing the button. Hopefully you actually figured that out rather than jumping directly to typing insults to me.

Anyways, I'll go away and make a post in one of the technical sections about how to get a wife/gf or have sex with my phone since i'm sure nobody has asked that before...

xomm, in the future, you may want to link people to the wiki page for adding the repositories (especially devel/testing). It's generally frowned upon to show people how to do it directly since that circumvents the large warnings about using non-stable development code found on the wiki page...

ah, that's where it's hidden. Just tried to use it but from the first glance it looks a bit weird and complicated. If it's the only way to disable the red light then I'll need to invest some time tomorrow to figure that out.

BTW, would be nice to have a kind of tip where to find just installed app. Since now there are many places where it can land.

some apps aren't set up to appear in the menu or anywhere, and there is certainly nowhere other than "uninstall" you will see them outside of the terminal in this case. I know this may come as a shock to you, but I will once again refer you to the search box, and perhaps a recommendation to read the instructions for the apps you are unsure about. As much as we all enjoy pretending to be search engines for people like you, I think you will receive a faster and more polite response from the search box or google...

azzurro, just open the Camera application, start recording video, and use these buttons:

Q and W to toggle Flash LEDs on and off,
E and R to toggle the red recording LED,
A and S to adjust focus,
D to correct the auto focus.

(By the way, if the thread continues to devolve into a shouting match, it will be closed.)

thanks xomm, you are extremely helpful, again! However, it's pity that one cannot once and forever disable that red light. Once disabled with Live Focus, it lights up again during the next record session - so you have to disable it again... It's a bit annoying, should be some better solution.

PS: I would suggest to delete all unrelated to the topic posts (including some of my).

to search:

pull out your hardware keyboard in application manager.
click your desired category of applications (All apps).
start typing on your n900's hardware keyboard and it will start filter to match your keywords.

Because if we are recording our cat, that red light attracts him and destroys all intentionality of the video. Because if we are recording our children, a red light is simply disturbing. Because if we are recording our basketball team, that red light can be seen as a laser, a fact that can 1) disturb the players 2) attract the police directly to us.

And which law of what country doesn't allow to record videos and sounds of people without their permission? I mean, the n900 is sold in a lot of countries, right?
