Internet chess on the N800?

Hi there,

Can someone using the N800 please try logging on to the Free Internet Chess Server and seeing if they can play someone.

You can login as a guest without needing to set up an account (although accounts are free). If you choose 'Login Now' from the following web page you'll connect using a Java client.

http://www.freechess.org/

If this works I'll be rushing out to buy one.

Thanks so much,

Adam.

No Java on the Nokia internettablets. Sorry.

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

Hi All,

I noticed that some folks have been able to install KDE on the tablet. Does this mean that they can then use java and stuff like Mozilla?

If so, then would this then mean the chess website (and others that use java applets) would work?

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

Currently there is no java support. I believe someone has successfully compiled Java for ARM processor command line only. for graphics, additional librarys would have to be ported.

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

But internet chess servers can be accessed with other clients besides Java can't they? Surely a small client could be ported to the Nokia that would be albe to do so.

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

Since most Internet chess is speed chess, I doubt if you could play fast enough to do decently. xboard is the program to look at, I think. I don't think that fics or icc have anything very workable, even potentially.

The one chess game available for the N800 is more or less worthless, I think. One thing that would be nice would be to be able to watch chess being played internationally.

At a minimum it would be nice to be able to view rhe games at chessgames.com, but that requires Java.

I love my N800, but it is a bust as far as chess is concerned.

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

Chess in yahoo games seems to work okay. It is flash 7 based. I will test a little more. The ads are also flash based and may be slowing response down.

Or not.. very laggy. probably crappy code. in either the ads or the game or both.

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

Someone write us some decent chess software!

Another chess program that would be nice to have available is scid, a good database and game display program. There is a chess program called Knight(s) that I found rather awful.

I'm writing to Mike Lahey, author of Bookup, a chess training program. Maybe he would put together something for us..,

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

Based on its description, xboard can probably be made to work on the N800. On the other hand, the 770 has been out for a 18 months and no one has ported xboard yet (so perhaps it is harder than it seems).

It is larger and more expensive, but the answer to this kind of question on the Pepper Pad 3 is always yes. The Pepper Pad has an i386 compatible processor and can use most existing Fedora Core 4 RPMs. I'm sure xboard will work on the Pepper Pad, and in any case I just tried it and the Jin Java application that is loaded after logging in to FICS runs within its web browser (based on FireFox). If you are interested in the PP3, I suggest asking on their Forum to see if anyone is already using it for FICS access.

I don't know about internet chess on the N800, but the chess game that comes loaded on it is very challenging and an excellent learning tool.

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

It may be excellent as that kind of learning tool, especially if you want to learn to think in a brute-force, mechanical way, but if you want to learn from the games of humans by playing through their games, it is impossible. The programmer would have been creating a more useful game if he hadn't bothered to make it play chess at all, just display games. But I've never been a fan of computer chess...

I made a quick port of the XBoard program.

You can get it at http://www.v7f.eu/public/n800/chess/

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

Eboard works great for my purposes! I am just using it to look at games. Castling and en passant worked. I didn't try promoting a pawn yet, and I didn't try playing online I did open several games at once. I want to try it for watching live international tournaments, which would be a blast. I think that eboard won't work on icc but just fics (rival chess servers). xboard works on both. But I like eboard quite a bit. Next I'll see if I can load a pgn file somehow...

Edit: I played and won my first 5-minute game on fics.

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

Hello, i have downloaded an started the .deb file, I got from http://www.v7f.eu/public/n800/chess/ for the EBoard program. But after starting the installation I got the message that it is incompatible.

In the logfile I can see the following content:

Quote:

osso-application-installer 4.46, UI version 2
/usr/bin/dpkg-deb -f '/media/mmc1/eboard_1.0.3-10_armel.deb'
Package must have "Section: user/FOO" to be considered compatible.
What exactly could be the problem?

best regards,
jukey

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

Good question. This version of eboard is still working great for me, but of course I upgraded from the earlier version. I would suggest that you try the earlier version, but I don't know where it is. Hopefully the programmer will see our messages soon and come to the rescue.

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

You should still be able to install it from an xterm (as root): dpkg -i /media/mmc1/eboard_1.0.3-10_armel.deb
until the developer fixes the control file.

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

Thank you very much, TA-t3! :-)

After installing xterm, the becomeroot tool an your code line I was able to install the eboard.

I whish you a nice weekend!

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

Hello,

i have imported my little chessdatabase (200 games in a pgn file) and i was able to load a single game from this database.

But there seems to be a bug: i've pushed the play button for the first move and the pawn (e2-e4) no longer was visible on the board. some of the next moves where displayed correctly but some of them where not displayed too.

Is there somebody, who has the same problem or an idea, what's the problem?

Ciao jukey

jukey 2007-08-15 10:32

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

The problem is solved. It was the layout of the pgn-file:

Games in a pgn-file wich are formated in the short-form (e.g.: 1.e4 e5 2. ...) will work correctly. The long form (e.g. 1.e2-e4 e7-e5 2. ...) don't work in the right way.

So it's a good workaround to convert the pgn-file before importing it into eboard.

Installs just fine on my N800 using the command line.
So far so good, no problems I'm seeing. Good work!

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

After flashing the N800 with the new OS2008 I was not able to install eboard again. Here is the terminal output:
Quote:

Selecting previously deselected package eboard.

Unpacking eboard (from eboard_1.0.3-10_armel.deb) ...

Package hildon-libs0 is not installed.
dpkg: error processing eboard (--install):

Where I can find the not found packages?

I love the eboard port for the tablets and it would be a pitty, if theres no possibility to get the program working on OS2008.

Thanks for listening,
ciao jukey

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

well, i could install eboard and crafty with no problem, but when i am playing in FICS, with no apparent reason the program just crash (quits?), normally after my opponent make some move. it does not happens all the time, but at least a few times in a game of 15min, what turns impossible to play serious games.
does anyone experienced that too? any idea on how to fix?
i really want to be able play on fics through my n800...

Sounds very strange... I am using eboard in an extensive way nearly every morning while commuting. I normaly play games with 2 minutes time + 12 seconds per move but the program runs very stable for me. I can do 3 or 4 games in a row and everything is fine.

You can rund eboard from xterm using the command:
Code:

$ eboard
There should be some output if things went wrong. This you can send to the person who ports the game to maemo. His email address you can grab from this site: http://www.v7f.eu/public/n800/chess/

Which version of maemo you are using?

As I wrote I never had any problem with eboard on my N800. Strange...

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

thank you for the idea. i think i am using chinook. i am new to maemo. i flashed the last os release from nokia.
i was trying to install scid now, i found at http://debfarm.free.fr/pool/ but i am receiveing its saying i dont have tcl and tk, i installed tcl from estras-devel, but it still says i dont have tcl. maybe it needs the older version, i dont know. by the way, thank you for your suggestion. it seems it will take some efforts to have my programs working. ;)

Re: Internet chess on the N800?

Eboard is the only well working fics client for maemo I know.

You should make sure that you have installed the last OS version for your tablet. It is well documented here:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_t...ing_on_Windows

good luck!
