Media player for N900

Hi

I have just purchased my N900 a few days back. I just wanted to know if there was any possiblity to play all sorts of media files on the default player or is there any app that I can download that plays all formats of videos.

I'm reffering to something like the VLC player that is available for PC.

Re: Media player for N900

extra decoders support made no difference to me, still only plays avi and mp4

What about mplayer or VLC?

Re: Media player for N900

Keep in mind that currently anything bigger than the phone's resolution 800x480 wont play, even if filetype is supported. AFAIK

Re: Media player for N900

Try mplayer and kmplayer(kmplayer is a gui for mplayer so you need both). It supports a fairly wide selection of codecs.

Which formats exactly are you trying with the Media Player? "all sorts" is rather vague.

Its basically .mkv divx and avi is jus bad. does not do the job. Tried with the decoder but does not work.

Error Message:Unable to play file format.

For me, the default media player plays DivX effortlessly.

Re: Media player for N900

KMPlayer works for me, mp4 and mkv smooth as silk.

Re: Media player for N900

Yeah, then I suggest using KMPlayer or VLC.

I'm a Maemo n00b, so I have no idea if this will work for you but it's worth a shot: I was getting the same error message with .mkv and.avi files. I opened them through the file manager and they worked fine -- I can now open them directly through the default media player.

I downloaded extra decoders support and am running PR 1.2.

Re: Media player for N900

Already tried with the file manager too . No success :(

Mplayer and KMplayer will play just about any format you place into it. If it's still not playing then your source video has an issue. Commonly if your source video it to large in size ( 1200 x 900 ) it won't play because the player is trying to compress and crop with is a lot of work.

Best to reencode your source videos with something like Handbrake to what the N900 needs.

But it doesn't even plays mp3s or mp4s.

Re: Media player for N900

Reflashed now and everything's working fine again.

Is there a way to zoom a movie ?
The black bars at top and bottom are really annoying and I would like to remove them by zooming in the entire picture.
Is there a way to do that with the built in or any other player ?

Re: Media player for N900

Well, you could just use VLC-player. Its pretty fast and easy to install, just add the following repository:
Address: http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/maemo/
Distripution: fremantle
Components: free

Re: Media player for N900

VLC is not starting for me. :(

Re: Media player for N900

You have to run these commands and restart your N900:

rm /usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/hildon/vlc.png
rm /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon/vlc.png
rm /usr/share/icons/hicolor/128x128/hildon/vlc.png

Re: Media player for N900

Ok, gonna try that.

Big Thx dude !
It's working like a charm, 1080p movie (converted to 800x360px) is working smooth.
And finally without the annoying black bars ! :)

Re: Media player for N900

I am a bit of a newbie in computer terms but have managed to get vlc onto my n900 and can access it from x terminal by typing vlc.
As far as getting the icon to appear on the desktop so that I can start it up from there I read your advice on how to do that but not sure how to carry it out.
When I type sudo gainroot into x terminal the command line appears a /home/user # .I hope this is what I should have up before entering your above commands to remove unwanted files. When it comes to actually typing in the the lines of commands do I press enter after each line or not? If I do the message afterwards is that " it is not found". Could you lead me through it in laymans terms please.

Also picture is great on the n900 using vlc but no sound at all . The files I have been trying are all mp3 soundtrack, any advice there.
Thanks in advance James

Re: Media player for N900

@ woodman-46

With sudo gainroot (root access) you just type what is on post # 32 by MiK456 and push enter after each line.
That's for the icon on your screen. And if you getting "it is not found" X Terminal is case sensitive. If it still not working try this:
Code:

rm /opt/usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/hildon/vlc.png
rm /opt/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon/vlc.png
rm /opt/usr/share/icons/hicolor/128x128/hildon/vlc.png

And reboot after. You can type reboot and it will do it Instead of using power button.

Re: Media player for N900

Many thanks for your useful reply. I just wasn't looking hard enough, I did not notice the gap between rm and the / .That makes all the difference. Any ideas about no audio when I am playing xvid with mp3 soundtrack. The audio setting shows that it is set to channel 1 (the only other is disable) James
