Freyja Media Player

Hi people, i am considering to code a media player for mobile Qt platform (maemo,meego, symbian) and sell it on ovi store.

The things i got in mind is rating, dynamic playlists (à la amarok), lyrics display, maemo widget and a cross-platform sync app.

It would be really fun to do, but i'd like to see how many would buy it.

(PS. in autumn me and a friend will probably add to ovi an app useful for wardriving (GUI) )

Re: Freyja Media Player

Since there are some good working open source media players, i would not buy one.

Re: Freyja Media Player

I'd buy it as long as it has portrait mode support.

admiral0 2010-07-05 20:21

Re: Freyja Media Player

That for sure as meegoand symbian would require it

Re: Freyja Media Player

I might consider buying it if performance is really good. My problem with the stock media player is that it is too slow and stuttery. If yours improves on that, then yeah, possibly.

Re: Freyja Media Player

Then that shall be a goal. I have a n900 so i can test what i deploy.

what codecs and playback rates are u gonna support and will playback be GPU accelerated?

Re: Freyja Media Player

I would definitely buy it if the price is reasonable (less than £10 if it's really good) and it has the following features:
- Equaliser (with presets)
- Hardware accelerated (thourgh DSP) because of battery usage
- Cover automatic download
- Easy playlist creation/management.
- Support for mp3/ogg/flac (at least mp3 hardware accelerated)
- A bit of eye candy
- Landscape and Portrait mode

That plus visualizations and lyrics downloader would be an instant winner in my book. Oh and stutter-free FLAC decoding when doing other stuff.

Re: Freyja Media Player

If it's "great", people will pay for it.

Adding to fmo's list:
- Asian language support (display of file names and tags)
- File / folder browsing with file and folder playback options.
- MAFW support like MediaBox (allows volume control while locked)
- Big buttons mode like for when driving etc.
- Various full screen vIsualization effects option during playback
- Audio quality / experience improving effects options. (SRS WOW etc)

btw, are you good at making a video player also? Would love a good video player that manages to play up to 720p video files via using the DSP. (HW can do it but no SW can on N900 atm) With all the nice options such as zoom/pan/scan/ratio, bookmark support for certain times of the video, audio options etc. (or even a very nice front end of mplayer - alternatives to kmplayer or sib)

I don't think too many people would buy a music player app . . . even for 99 cents because ever phone already comes with an app for that.

But I think a better idea would to be to hook the App up too amazon that way you can earn PC off every purchase they make and it could (IN THE LONG RUN) Add up too alot more.

MAKE THE MUSIC PLAYER FILL IN EMPTY ALBUM ART!!!!

You can use the Yahoo image search api for that

And show them related artists . . . Also using Yahoo's Related Searches api and BANG you got a kick *** free music player than generates income !!!!

This is the same model that Firefox took and they are quite successful.

You can't sell a Web Browser. Your PC comes with IE for free but if your free browser kicks but than you make money on the advertising fees.

For each artist give uses the option to search with a Google Custom search or to shop for mp3's on amazon!

Bang now you got two streams on income that will only stop when people stop using your app!

They better it is the more people will use it and tell their friends about it.

Build in some TELL-A-FRIEND social networking nagging once in a while and it could end up making you allot more money than you every could have made by tring to sell it for .99 cents to users who have never ever tried it or heard of it.
:D

Since mm apps needs to block the screen dimming for video anyhow, it's easy to use that same routine for volume keys.
Something like this is add to kmplayer-0.4.900 (extras-devel)

if (has_video) {
osso_display_blanking_pause (osso_context);
} else {
DBusConnection *conn = (DBusConnection *)
osso_get_sys_dbus_connection (osso_context);
DBusMessage *msg = dbus_message_new_method_call (MCE_SERVICE,
MCE_REQUEST_PATH, MCE_REQUEST_IF, "req_keypad_off_pause");
dbus_connection_send (conn, msg, NULL);
dbus_connection_flush (conn);
dbus_message_unref (msg);
}

(else branch keeping the hardware keys alive).
IIRC, there is even a simpler osso function for that, but makes the app depend on pr1.2, so I did it like this

I also think that these are great features in a media player but what i would personally pay money for is a PATCH for the default media player that would fix what everyone is complaining about considering that it already has some of the list above ,so in my opinion why create something from scratch when you can do much less of the work for greater benefit ( overall improvement for the the n900).
anyway thats just me :).

Thanx.

Re: Freyja Media Player

A video editing application, like Steve Jobs showed during the iphone4 intro, would be nice. AFAICS the building blocks are there, like a gstreamer encoder plugin that is used by recording video's with the camera.

Re: Freyja Media Player

My player wouldn't play videos, it would focus on music like amarok.

Yes, i plan to add lyrics and album art support. Equalizer is not difficult to implement, but it wouldn't use DSP, so battery would be drained quickly. I intend to use phonon as audio backend. My first goal remains usability.

If somebody asks himself why don't i patch the original maemo player, well, ask nokia for sources and someone will.

I intend to do a sync software, or a plugin for amarok to sync music with n900.

+playing by folder
+MAFW backend
+battery usage while playing with EQ on should be as much as the default media player.

I'd pay good money for that.

Re: Freyja Media Player

There is a Player for Palm OS an Windows mobile. It is called pocket-tunes. Same features and I would pay 10 $.

Re: Freyja Media Player

i personally don't like MAFW. It is full of Gobject stuff while freyja is Qt, and it isn't compatible with meego afaik. Phonon is the right path. It offers equalizer, but eq comes at a cost.

Also afaik mafw would limit some playlist features that i have in mind (like dynamic playlists). I'll see if it's worth it.

EDIT: it's not worth it. mafw is just a layer over gstreamer in maemo, and phonon uses gstreamer under maemo builds.

Wouldn't using anything other than MAFW would cause hiccups in the audio while the backlight is turned on/off or just using the device with the player in the background?

Also if the EQ would cause battery drainage, that would be a dealbreaker, sorry.

windows7 2010-07-24 12:58

Re: Freyja Media Player

If it would match the close quality of coreplayer, i would as none of the current n900/linux players are good enough.

There is one that looks promissing and i hope will be able to kick coreplayer lack of n900 support in the backside, named mediabox.
It offers some cool staff already like youtube.

Nope, freyja process should simply be reniced to achieve that, and it will take care of that.

All EQs cause battery drainage, because they require additional audio processing. I don't think DSPs can do that.

Renicing won't help much. Your app gets frozen, and audio gets routed into nirvana whenever Maemo5 feels like it. Nokia did really mess this up.

SavageD 2010-07-24 17:21

Re: Freyja Media Player

The only reason I'd buy a new mp3 player, is if it contains something no other media player has, Like:

1) press vol button = Skip / Prev Track
Long presss = increase / decrease vol
camera button = Play / pause / long press = stop

2) Dam good but simple gui

3) low cpu consumption

4) doesn't stutter when using multiple apps

5) good codec support

6) Equaliser

7) Ability to raise the "dB." The loudnesss of the speaker. Just like the s60 ogg player does.

fmo 2010-07-26 10:23

Re: Freyja Media Player

The only way to make the player use less cpu would be if it was able to bypass completely pulseaudio and gstreamer.

PulseAudio might be good for the desktop but for a portable device it's just way too much of a ressource hog. Adding to that the fact that the gstreamer backend is slower than the xine backend (at least on PC) that gives you a bad mix for a poor 600Mhz mobile cpu
