[Maemo 5] Got the N900 - Medical application requests from a third-year medical student

Hey everyone. I am a new N900 user, over from Android (most recently), and I had a few questions.

First of all, are there any physicians or fellow med students who are using this thing as their all-inclusive device? That's the main reason I got it.

How are you running Epocrates on this? Or something similar? I found a thread with the search function, but I didn't really understand what they were talking about. I can usually figure tech stuff out, but I am not a programmer, nor do I really understand Linux very well. Is there any plan for Epocrates to be made specifically to run on Maemo?

What about other medical-specific applications? Anything that you have found useful? If a doc asks me to look something up, I'd like to be able to do it right away. Google is fine, but sometimes it can be a pain to sort through all the results that aren't particularly relevant.

I'd get an Ipod Touch or something if I had to, but I'd rather just do everything from the Nokia.

Any input? Thanks!

well palm has a lot of medical stuff, so you can install garnetvm on your n900 and install palm apps, not sure if there are many maemo applications.

There doesn't seem to be a version for the n900. There is really no commercial software for the n900.

It does have a really good browser though, so anything you are able to do on a desktop in a browser, you can do with the n900. Aside from flash 10.

MerckMedicusMobile is what on my N900, there is nothing Merck does NOT know. And there is NO medical journal that is NOT on Merck. Yes, this is NOT a typo, there is NO medical journals that is NOT on Merck.

Epocrates is my drug books, and there is NO drug Epocrates does NOT know. And sure, there are all kinds of goodies on Epocrates drug book, they are medical calculator, medical tipbits, infectious drug use, and a Note to save whatever you care to save.

These ALL work well on my N900, I have reference text, medical journals, drug books, there is NO medical conditions my N900 cannot handle.

Oh sure, ask a medical question that is NOT on this post ,

1) 1st install gvm on N900, dl from here, http://www.access-company.com/products/gvm/
2) register for a free account with epocrates
3) get the epocrates.prc (I think it is call setup.prc) into your n900
4) run it and put in the acct info you registered with epocrates.

Autosync once only. After 1st successful autosync, go into setting and disable sync option, and continue to run it to exit, there is a bug in the setup program, it will kieep on autosync without exit

post back with details.

"all-inclusive device"

Well, I'm most partial with Up to Date. Because of this, I'll say a N900 might not have been the best choice.

But yeah, stick around and we'll help you push the tablet with all of it's features to help you get through med school. :)

Heya bun.

I personally don't agree with you about MerckMedicusMobile.

Hope that doesn't create weirdness between us. :)

He should be able to access Cochrane from his web browser which is the best research to find for evidence based practice which most institutions are heading towards.

But yeah, Up to Date puts it all together for me which is something our tablets don't support.

Just my own opinion of course. :)

i am a medical student too. i have to deal with medical terms also stuffs a lot. i think if you are using n900 is a web based mobile device, you should search it over 3G or wifi. With internet access, u can search everything about medical things.
i do not need any app because app like this must be update everyday to get news about the field.

There is ONLY one form of evidence based medicine, medical journals. UpToDay, MerckMedicusMobile are 2 of 1, 1 of 2, digested materials. I use them just to get some idea, then I move onto Medical Consult for medical journal search. Did you subscribe to NEJM? Better do it now while your status remains student, which is 1$ a month. Not that I am recommending it, just take the student discount while you can.

I have yet to subscribe to NEJM.

Thank you very much for the tip.

And yeah, I'm no longer a student. I'm now facing worse things in life. *lol*

Knowledge is like starbuck coffee, there are quite several levels. At the level of student, google should get your brownie points. Being an attending, that is NOT sufficient.

There is NO medicine that "must be update everyday". I am still reading Goldsberg's 2nd edition of neurology made ridiculous simple, 1989? An aorta is an aorta, a transmet amp is a transmet amp, no change over years and years.

Welcome on board to all the allied health personnels, maybe this thread will churn out something useful.

Yes, I agree. I have yet to find something that's current day by day.

Up to Date gets "updated", if you will, 4 times out of the year.

And yeah, there are certain things that will never change, they even make reference to articles and journals from the 50s.

But health and the overall human body is now becoming dynamic in our understanding of it. The old school way of thinking doesn't apply that well anymore, especially to patient teaching.

Up to Date has it all in my opinion, others will state that Pepid or Lexi does it better. It's all about personal preference on how medical information can be easily found.

But for our newcomer who posted this thread, Garnet VM or Kchmviewer or VNC viewer is about all your tablet will have to offer you on this.

Don't overlook the power of SumSearch - a good medical search engine which works well on the NITs :)

Congratulation! Congratulation! Congratulation!

You really should subscribe to anything you remotely like while as a student, as they never change one's status even you gradulated, that save some bucks. Oh well, you going to make a lot of greens, so start collecting receipts, you going to need them for the rest of your life. Remember, if you dont get audit, you are paying too much, my mentor told me that

so where are you now located?

I moved just about a month ago but I'm still here in Lansing, Michigan.

I don't care about the green and never will.

Just got a nice message from an agency today and it looks like they will sponsor me to do a medical volunteership over in Peru for the next six months.

Don't ask why I'm doing this. I guess I woke up one day and finally understood that life is short when you really look at it all.. :)

Yeah, if you're talking about being online there's plenty of junk to use or find on the stupid web.

You need to be careful with this though.

Patient, "So what's my condition Doc?"

"Well, I Googled it and ..." *lol*

I thought that the original poster was asking for tablet specific programs though.

Great link by the way Ernesto!

Thank you. :)

There are also plenty of a-ehm "free" (in the Yaaaargh! sense) medical books out there. I've some on my N900, namely two Italian manuals of clinical therapy, and in English one compendium of psychotherapy, the dsm-iv, a textbook of physical diagnosis, "the" textbook of pharmacology, and "the" textbook of clinical medicine.
They are better than any app imho. PM for details.

Yeah. I have four of the best books myself.

Only trouble with having these is that you really need to have read them from front to back so you already know everything that's in them.

Searching through them using Kchmviewer on the older tablet is too painfully slow. :)

No specific medical application by now, my friend. See this thread or search for "epocrates" to install the palm app, or use the web browser and the pdf reader.

Emedicine website is good enough for most things and has references.
Use it on PC at work but never have reception to use it on N900.
Shame there probably isnt going to be app like the iphone for it.

Well I must not be aging well since I've never cared much for money and probably never will.

There are better riches in life to be had so please don't assume that I don't know any better.
