Sure it's possible. Just change the skype config/source so that it uses the other v4l device.
By the way, I can't see Skype with front cam in this video, just the specific apple video call thing.

yeah..ive always wanted the back cam..its much clearer that the front..any one facing clarity problems with the front camera?(i have extremely low resolution!)

This kind of answer, while earnest; doesn't quite help. I'm sure it's common knowledge that the Skype source is closed; the request needs to be made to the vendor for such a feature by either the handset manufacturer to fit closely with what hardware is there to be utilized or by exposing the APIs and offering documentation (and incentive) to do so... by the handset manufacturer usually.

Well... heck. My answer doesn't help as much either. Perhaps aMSN, RTComm and the rest - including Pidgin will make this happen first perhaps? Or even Fring?

Maybe it would be possible to find the video device it uses from the binary and change that, or redirect the path with LD_PRELOAD style hook? If either is possible, maybe it would also be possible to make a new video device that allows changing from one camera to the other in real time.

/dev/video0 and /dev/video1 are just names. Swap them to swap cameras. I haven't tested this, but it ought to work.

isn't the back camera higher res? if so, that's more pixels to transmit, and thus more bandwidth needed for skype... could lead to problems.

by the way, are there any apps that let you take a still pic using the front camera, with live preview on the display?

Some parameters appear to be tweakable at /etc/skyhost/skypevideocodecs.conf but the binaries are pretty locked up, no apparent /dev/video* or gstreamer usage in /usr/lib/skyhost (though I might just be looking at the wrong place).

However, the VideoHost plugin/thingy seems to be a purely Nokia add-on so it might not be impossible to lobby for a camera switch option.

What about using the back cam with Google video chat? How likely is that? Works pretty well with the front camera.

By changing VGA-pref=80 in the [sender-param] one can send 640x480 videos on skype.


MEanings of the flags:

profile-level-id: A base16 RFC 4648 [9] (hexadecimal) representation
of the following three bytes in the sequence parameter set NAL
unit specified in H.264 [4]: 1) profile_idc, 2) a byte herein
referred to as profile-iop, composed of the values of
constraint_set0_flag, constraint_set1_flag, constraint_set2_flag,
constraint_set3_flag, and reserved_zero_4bits in bit-significance
order, starting from the most significant bit, and 3) level_idc.
Note that reserved_zero_4bits is required to be equal to 0 in
H.264 [4], but other values for it may be specified in the future
by ITU-T or ISO/IEC.

The profile-level-id parameter indicates the default sub-profile,
i.e. the subset of coding tools that may have been used to
generate the stream or that the receiver supports, and the default
level of the stream or the receiver supports.

hey, by pasting these commands, will i be able to use the back camera right away?
and if so, how do i switch back to the front camera when needed?
(is there another way you can increase the clarity of the front camera too??)

I know skype is closed source. but is there a way to emulate the back camera as front camera or script which redirects front camera when called to the back camera. so that we run the srcipt first and when skyp is called it will automatically connects to the back camera. any ideas?

what about creating a virtual device "/dev/videostream" and streaming the front camera to it by default, and when the back-lid is open switch the streaming to back-camera.

This is a great idea, but you'd still have to modify skype to look for the video at /dev/videostream. But it would be very useful for other programs, too. Video recording, photos, anything. Open source programs like Bliss900 or something are easier to modify than Skype!

This being linux, wouldn't there be a way to trick Skype into reading from a different device while thinking it is still dealing with the face camera?


Btw, did anyone tried that change to transmit in 640x480? Does it work? Does it look any better to the person on the other side of the line?

tried skype front cam with google voice today, totally unusable. Don't even know why they have a camera in first place.
