N900: Application Manager NOT WORKING !!

Since last few days I'm having problems with "Application Manager". Everytime I try to open it, it either automatically close without any error or I get an error stating "Operation Failed" but the bar on the bottom continues to move as if it is checking for update. When the bar reaches to the end I get a message "no applications available".

Any suggestions ?

Re: N900: Application Manager NOT WORKING !!

Disabling JoikuSpot repository fixed the problem.

Does this happen every once in a while?

Anyone having this problem recently? :(

I can't even install some apps (Sphyro). Keep getting installation package not found error.

Menu->Log

should probably have something like
"Cannot acquire lock from pid XXXX"
if that's the case, go to XTerm and type
kill XXXX
then try again. if not, post the log here.

I had a similar problem after testing the Community SSU. I reflashed the device and its back to normal.

Edit/remove the /etc/apt/preferences file.

I wish whoever is responsible for whichever app is causing this would get it sorted out. This issue is coming up repeatedly.

Still not working for me.
  • Launching Application Manager = Error : "Operation failed"
  • Checking for updates = Error: "Operation failed"
  • Download option = "(no applications available)"
  • Try to install apps from Ovi Store = Error : "Unable to download '(apps)'. Application package not found"

Anyway to overcome without reflashing? I tried turning it off and on and even removing battery.

How does one Edit/remove the /etc/apt/preference file?

If you've got rootsh installed then removing it's just a matter of doing:
Code:

root
rm /etc/apt/preferences

Unless you know exactly what you're doing, I wouldn't recommend trying to edit the file. You'll probably find that removing it will result in whatever customised packages you've got installed (alternate hildon-desktop for example) being removed. In this case, you'd be best just filing a bug against either the package itself (if you installed it directly) or against whatever tool you used to install it. Hopefully then the author will actually fix the issue and it'll stop cropping up every week.

Oh, and if you don't have rootsh installed then you'll probably need to reflash.

I haven't done any development stuffs and am hoping to avoid it. I'm trying to keep my N900 working for at least another 3 years :D

But from what I understand from your suggestion, should I try uninstalling the most recent applications instead?

I doubt removing the applications will help - most of them don't undo any customisation you've set within the application. Have you installed anything to modify/customise the N900 (provide extra desktops, rotation options, desaturate instead of blur, etc)? You could also check what the content of the file is (cat /etc/apt/preferences) which may provide some info on what's behind it.

The last app I installed was Love Meter Maemo through Ovi Store...which I uninstalled the same day after seeing it was useless.

I tried to install Sphyro and it shows downloaded, but error to install (application pack not found). I tried with another app and it just shows the same error. In Ovi Store, the status shows downloaded.

I recall this operation error occured before last time and it got resolved on its own. I hope this is the same situation. But any suggestion would be very much appreciated.

I just backup the device just in case...

Re: N900: Application Manager NOT WORKING !!

GOT IT WORKING!!!

I went to Nokia Support Discussion and tried one of the suggestion. For the benefit of those having the same problem:

Problem:
Launching Application Manager = Error : "Operation failed"
Checking for updates = Error: "Operation failed"
Download option = "(no applications available)"
Try to install apps from Ovi Store = Error : "Unable to download '(apps)'. Application package not found"

Solution:
Disable all application catalogues - autorun check updates
Enable all application catalogues
Done!

:D

I was also having same problem but yesterday i used
apt-get autoremove
i got list of package not being used and an warning that autoremove has done some error so i used

apt-get remove (package name which was shown using earlier command)

and now my Application Manager is working fine

I also have CSSU installed

Hope this may help

but be aware before u remove any package
