[WIP] Ubuntu 9.10 on the N900

For those of you who know about this, the image is still not up, this is a post to summarize the progress so far.

Image uploaded, link and instructions here

Basic Ubuntu install with only gnome-desktop installed (showing output of uname -a):
http://wiki.maemo.org/images/thumb/a...u9.10_N900.jpg

ubuntu-desktop metapackage installed, with the netbook-launcher running in the background:
http://wiki.maemo.org/images/e/e6/Ub...0_Launcher.png
Same as above, BT running (thanks giannoug) (also shows blue LED at 255, keyboard at 100 [brightness])
http://i25.tinypic.com/200b61.jpg

Boot time is about 1-2 minutes from power button to usable desktop, didn't really time it.

See what's working and what isn't here: http://wiki.maemo.org/User:Mohammad7410/Ubuntu

You'll need binaries from /lib/firmware/ for Wi-Fi and bluetooth, full tutorial when the image is up.

Image still not up, will compress it and upload it later, same goes for a video showing boot up (disappointed with the N86's cam tbh, can't record macro so the video will be VERY blurry)

Thanks to b-man for help w/ debootstrap :)

Depends on my network and how quick I can clean up binaries and tar it (as well as fix some other crap in it) :)

My question was, when you upload the image, will the non-working things will be made to work in that image or in the future?

Oh, just copy the binaries from your device to the memory card.

Ok, thanks. thanks once again for investing your efforts in this. This is awesome and makes the N900 even more awesome.

This is awesome! Have you seen Ubuntu 10.7? Might be a better candidate than 9.10. It is Ubuntu for armel devices. Though it are optified to work on arm v8 it would probably work great on n900.

Ubuntu 10.07 is Ubuntu 10.04 but configured for armel.

This is how I record macro shots on my N95 (you might be able to do the same for the N86). I smack the front of the phone so the lens moves forward while I'm in video mode. As long as you dont exit the video recorder or switch to picture mode it'll stay in "macro" mode. To return to normal just switch to picture mode and refocus.

Re: [WIP] Ubuntu 9.10 on the N900

@MuhammadAG first of all great work :)

My questions are will i be able to boot ubuntu along side with android/nitdroid, i'm dualbooting at the min. I meen can i use the sd card ext3 partition i allready have or will i need to make a new partiton for that? Right now i have 1gb sd card thats partitioned with 100mb fat32 and 900mb ext3, will that do in case of trible boot is duable? And will the kernel i have be able to boot ubuntu or will that have to be flashed with a new one? In that case will you be able to compile a kernel/zImage that can do both and overclock?

MohammadAG 2010-07-09 10:38

Re: [WIP] Ubuntu 9.10 on the N900

It uses the same kernel you have installed, so if that supports overclocking just follow the same steps you would on Maemo.
It is possible to quad (or even quint) boot, I have Maemo, Eclair, Froyo, Fedora and Ubuntu running. You can boot as many operating systems as you want, as long as you have the partitions for the OSs.

That sounds really good :) Just to make one thing clear i will have to do seperate partitions for each OS on the sd card, if so wich will i have to do, or will the ubuntu boot from same partition as nitdroid/froyo? I'm a bit noob to all this multiple boots and partitioning :o

Re: [WIP] Ubuntu 9.10 on the N900

As far as i understand this bootmenu thing, every os has it's own partition to boot from. Since the N900 is capable of so many OSs, i bought myself a 16Gig card. ATM i run Maemo+Nitdroid, but by end of this month i will hopefully boot up Maemo,Nitdroid,Ubuntu and Neopwn ;)

So if i understand correctly the partitions would be something like ext3 p2 - Nitdroid, ext3 p3 - Ubuntu, ext3 p4 - Neopwn and so on? :)

Re: [WIP] Ubuntu 9.10 on the N900

You can create a small, 1Gb FAT32 partition and the rest 2Gb EXT3 partitions :) At least thats what I did.

Re: [WIP] Ubuntu 9.10 on the N900

as i see port ubuntu 10.07 in n900 could be easier since it's designed for ARM devices

MohammadAG 2010-07-09 20:23

Re: [WIP] Ubuntu 9.10 on the N900

It needs thumb2 support, the stock kernel on the N900 has it disabled as it causes crashes, I already tried to get 10.04 working, but it failed to even chroot into it.

Re: [WIP] Ubuntu 9.10 on the N900

soo.. bottom line
how do i port *any* ubuntu to n900?
where's the guide?
and whats wip?

Re: [WIP] Ubuntu 9.10 on the N900

Wait for a tar.bz2, wip is work in progress, it won't auto magically work when you "port" it :)

Oh and #NITUbuntu on Freenode to discuss it on IRC (nitdroid, ty for the name :P)

Don't want to poke in the wrong jar.. but wouldn't Nitbuntu sound better?

Over in the NITdroid thread theres a new multiboot bootmenu that can flash kernels automatically, ie flash maemo kernel before booting maemo, android before android etc etc. That would be helpful in enabling thumb2 support in a kernel made just for ubuntu so it would leave maemo unaffected.

I'll check it out soon (that thread is hectic!), the image is 1.1GBs, I'll try lzma in a bit since it does better compression.

b-man found the debian link first (seen it a week ago), it doesn't help a lot since Ubuntu is VERY different for some reason (pointer, X, etc..).
Not sure if thumb2 causes it to crash cause of a hardware reason, or cause of maemo, I'll check it today.

Oh and yeah, #NITbuntu sounds better, but too late for that :P

I think Canonical is pushing arm development alot harder than Debian.

Is it easy to make your own UI/UX/skin on top of Ubuntu?

I have a few ideas that (I think) would make a killer experience on the N900 (and any larger tablets). I have these as .bmp images for you to peruse but I've only completed (e-painting) 2 segments out of the 4 I planned.

So if its easy/fairly easy my idea could be useful (purpose of this question)

I am not sure what exactly you refer too.. but you can make themes for gnome. If another shell is used it is also possible to do themes for them.

One is for "window frame" and then "icons" and "cursors". You can change it fully to then one you are happy with or mix different kinds.

This is a great site fore theme hunting:

How will right click work in NITubuntu? I dont really care for easydebs "click and hold" style right clicking, Id rather see a modifier key used (cam key maybe?) so you would hold modifier key then press screen for right click.
