PR1.2 destroyed my N900.

I really looked forward to PR1.2, as it supposedly would fix many things. The thińg is, since it was released, I've experienced the exact opposite. MicroB just closes down, (crashes) as fast as I can open it. The Conversations app crashes all the time, and it might even not work, as it won't register the letters i type on the keyboard.

I've tried reflashing, I've tried different kernels - to no avail. One of my friends have an N900 as well, and it's got the same problems, more or less.

So, did PR1.2 just **** it all up? Or should I send my N900 to the nearest retailer for a fixup?

Well 1.2 has some great new features, but I agree it's ruff around the edges... Browser crashes for me also.

Sorry to hear PR1.2 hasn't worked for you, it's an improvement over the last update.

Did you flash both the Fiasco and the EMMC images or was it an Over the air update. Flashing with the command line flasher should give you better results.

to have both sides of the equation: never suffered from any of these issues

If your browser is giving you grief - go into Options -> Clear private data and things should speed up

Re: PR1.2 destroyed my N900.

If the chances are that your friend installs the same applications and hacks like you, chances are that an application or hack maybe messing with the pr1.2 libs and stuff, I'm not certain of this though...I'm just putting my thoughts out :/

Re: PR1.2 destroyed my N900.

I used the command line tool to flash it. Over the air didn't work for me.

And the biggest problem isn't really the browser, i would say the biggest problem is that I can't write messages without rocking the button to turn on/off the screen - the text doesn't show up unless I do it.

if you haven't reflashed eMMC, do it asap...

Is it necessary to reflash eMMC when updatng?

Re: PR1.2 destroyed my N900.

The only problem 1.2 introduced for me is occasional reversed zoom in MicroB - sometimes I want to zoom in on text and it will zoom out the page to the max. Everything else is great.

Re: PR1.2 destroyed my N900.

I had problems when I moved to Pr1.2 on an over the air update (OTA) and that was from the leaked pr1.2 :o

Doing a full flash including the emmc cured all my woes and it has been fab ever since.

Give that a try first, its not difficult and there is a very good WIKI guide.

Re: PR1.2 destroyed my N900.

Its easy:

1.delete all the '.directory' (point directory) in /home/user/
2. reflash the PR 1.2 FW
3. do not use backup from previous fw!!!

Re: PR1.2 destroyed my N900.

I never had a problem after I flashed 1.2.... (Didn't flash emmc....) and it just works perfect for me :D

Re: PR1.2 destroyed my N900.

My performance has been pretty sucky since the pr 1.2 update too. Everything is slow. I'm embarrassed to show people my n900 cause it takes forever to get anything done on it. Tried to show someone pictures today and it was painful. Don't ever have much running at the same time either. Maybe a browser and usually the media player. But everything always is slow to start, respond to touches, close, etc...

Re: PR1.2 destroyed my N900.

I have to admit mine has a nasty habit of getting slow on PR1.2 as well.

On fresh bootup its far faster than older versions, but once its been running a few days of opening/closing applications (or one really heavy day of use) it often bogs right down.

I think its due to moving so much of the OS into eMMC so that when swapping kicks in, it can't keep up with all the eMMC activity. This would seem to make sense as sometimes if I leave it running for a while with nothing open it will speed up again. But you can guarantee as soon as you want to show someone how cool the N900 is it becomes laggy, and I mean "wait a few minutes for it to recover" laggy not just minor stalling.

Sadly I think this is a hardware problem, fitting a full Linux into 256MB is impossible, and by that I mean root size and RAM. If RAM had been 512MB I don't think it would have been half as bad, but we got what was available at the time. As 512MB is standard on new smartphones now I think things will be a lot better, we are just stuck with an OS on hardware which wasn't quite up for the job. Early adopter blues.

Mind you, I have similar problems on desktop Linux if I leave it logged in 24/7 even with 1TB HDD and 8GB RAM particularly with compositing enabled. ;)

Re: PR1.2 destroyed my N900.

I also noticed the reverse zooming in microB its some what annoying.

Re: PR1.2 destroyed my N900.

FWIW, PR1.2's MicroB has been very subpar for me. Uses way too much CPU (this is the killer, the phone runs ridiculously hot with the browser open) and implodes when I have the audacity to open 4 or 5 seperate tabs.

Other than that, I've had few issues with it.

re: fitting linux into 256 MB being impossible, that's clearly nonsense. Ever heard of Damn Small Linux?

glad to report that so far so good for me after P.R: 1.2, i'm not experiencing any of the OP's problems

updated with flasher

Re: PR1.2 destroyed my N900.

i did not reflash the emmc (coz i cant.....using a win7 64-bit), but the advise given to me is either:

1. install fw via NSU; or
2. re-flash fw via maemo flasher.

i already did both and my n900 is working fine.

nope but it'll fix browser related errors (browser, conversations) with 90% success rate or so.

NSU probably flashes eMMC too. I am not certain though

Okay I should have been more specific but I thought it pretty obvious that when I said Linux I meant a Maemo 5 calibre distro.

Obviously you CAN fit Linux into almost any amount of space, just look at your average broadband router, but you wont have a ton of libraries and XOrg on there.

PR1.2 is working fine for me, but after all the hysteria about the 'leaked' version, I'm sure I've seen more complaints abour the official version.

I experienced more problem than that, mostly scren locked up, very frequent. It un-freeze after a few seconds, but it is very frequent and extremely annoying.

I still think PR1.2 is great
