Custom ringtones for your contacts [in Extras-Devel]
 

Hello
I want to say THANKS for this app ! (in extras-devel).
Today I started to use this app, but I have a little problem with this...
After installation It's take a very long time before the phone is start ringing with custom and with default ringtone :(.

Maybe the author can improve this ?

Two or three days ago it was update, but without fixing the problem... :(
Meanwhile I removed this application because I miss the calls...

You could try MyContacts. It has group-specific ringtones.

This would be why it is still in extras-devel. I am really wanting it to work too, been my only real complaint about my N900.

yea dude, same thing is happening with me... after installing this app, the phone app shows up pretty late if someone calls u... on my phone it takes around 7 to 8 secs to show a call... a fix for that is really needed...

the problem is that its got to load the ringtone from the slower memory before playing it. mine also takes about 3 rings before my phone starts ringin. dont know how the dev can get around it really but hope there is a fix

Try using .wavs instead of .mp3. I found that it speeds it up.

I tried the WAV and AAC files - same result, a big delay... It's takes about 3-4 rings before the phone is start ringing...

Are you counting rings by calling from another phone number? I found that's not a reliable indicator in when your phone will start ringing (I've had huge differences from whether I tested using my home phone number or my sister's cell on Sprint). Tests with my fiancee (who's on the same network) resulted in her saying there was no difference when I used a custom ringtone or when I didn't have this installed.

But of course that all changes when the system is under heavy load (games, anything that heavily uses I/O like Gpodder).

I tried with my home phone and cellphone of my wife (same operator) = same result (delay) on the default and the custom ringtone. And my phone is completely under load (not games, nothing...)

Wait by default do you mean without this installed? If you have the same amount of delay in default (no custom ringtones installed) and with a custom ringtone then what's the problem (besides your ringtone being slow on the N900 in general).

Though if we're going by rings I've found that my N900 starts ringing (in both default and custom) after 2-3 rings heard from the test phone I call with. This means I can see the person's picture come up with the call response options. It seems for the first two rings though nothing happens on the N900 (I can use it as usual).

No... I mean the "default" ringtone that I added to all people before installation "Custom ring..." app, is worked without delay. But after installation I get delay on the all calls (on default and on the custom from specific people)....

Big delay herd also. Nice integration but the application needs alot to be usefull. Now it can not be used. As I said to the author I will buy it if it will work like the default ringing application of the phone: 0 seconds delay!

A more important issue than the delay for me is that, by default, you can mute the phone by putting it face down, whether if it's an incoming call, or alarm. But when this app is installed this function doesn't work. If this is fixed, it's AWESOME and Kudos to the developer.

I have tested it by putting on my desk and phoning it.

The light comes on, because the call is incoming. That takes 1-2 seconds. Then blackness for another second as the useless N900 tries to realise what to do with the call. It then flips into phone and you see the contacts face and the red and green buttons. Nothing is sounding at this point, no vibrations. The phone then stays silent for about 8-10 seconds, I think it depends on the location of the mp3 file. Longer for one on a memory card than the phone memory but both still around the ten seconds mark.

Then the phone rings with the ring tone. So it is very good but at around 15 seconds before I hear it. I then would normally have to fish in my pocket to get it out. (Five seconds) And then again to get it out of it's case (Another five seconds) Which usually uses that stupid and horrible Nokia built accelerometer for portrait and landscape mode of the phone. So the mp3 cuts out as the screen re orients itself with the movement of me taking it out the pocket. That takes five seconds. Once I finally get back to potrait to click on the green button. There is now no sound and I don't know if I have answered or not. Assuming most of my friends have not already hung up I can speak to them, at 30 seconds before I get to speak to the person calling me.

Anyone know of a way to stop the phone orienting itself. If I answer the phone I just want it as portrait, who answers it in landscape anyway? The CPU can't handle moving the screen and playing noise despite claims to multitasking. If you remove that feature you might get more speed out of the ring time searches. That would save 13 seconds for me.

i updated the n900's libraries, works better, still needs work for by the time i call and the time it rings on the other hone is abolut 3 or 4 then goes to voicemail. this may depend on the network though, i called from tmobile to at&t and there was a definite lag.

i was 8 rings in before i heard anything on the N900, and i think this happens even with stock install. this would explain why my wife always has missed calls. shes using the n900 on at&t's network.

If the problem is the slow mmc , why don't the developer make a copy of the mp3 in some tmpfs filesystem and point to there. It should be no delay, at least not for some read device delay.

I had to uninstall this app, as much as I wanted it. I call and the first few rings don't register on the phone. This is my experience will cell networks in general. Then, the rings will go thru my .BT headset, for a few rings, then the last ring, around number 8 plays on the N900.

Usually, before this app, the first few rings would not ring the N900, then the rest would play on the N900 AND the BT headset. Uninstalled and everything back to normal.


I'll be watching for this bug to be fixed because this will turn out to be one of the major killer appz when it is ironed out.

My N900 auto-updated this application yesterday, and after that it does not play any ringtones. I had noticed the call-delay bug earlier (Recaller notices the incoming call several seconds before the phone app appears and the ringing begins), but now it plays no ringtones at all. Uninstalled & everything is back to normal.

If the call-delay bug wasn't there, I'd go back to an earlier version of the app :/

Besides the delay for ring, i noticed that phone doesn't vibrate on any other ringtone. Uninstalled now all is fine. If those problems fixed, it's going to be a nice application.

Is this current version working for anyone yet? I had MyContacts installed which turned out to be a problem. So it is uninstalled. Does the current version of Custom Ringtones work?

i uninstalled my contacts, reinstalled ringtoned (latest version) but still cant see the button in the contact view..any ideas why?

My Contacts does not affect the button showing up or not.

I assume that when the author says MyContacts is incompatible with this application is because MyContacts will stop handling the ring tones per group not the other way around.

MyContacts should not affect how this applications works or, if does, it will only affect calls from contacts that you also added to a group with a custom ring tone on MyContacts. MyContacts will not interfere with any other calls.

Please let me know if I am wrong and I will do my best to try fixing it.

So does this work now? I'm confused. My install had such a long delay, no rings would come thru, or only the last ring would sound.

well ive just installed it, rebooted phone, set custom ringtone for my missus mobile on another network and my landline. both now ring instantly,
one of my ringtones is super crackly though, but will test further to see if i can find the cause of that.
but otherwise no slowdown whatsoever.

well i updated ringtoned (saw there was a update today) but i still dont get the add ringtone button under each contact..is there anything i can try? would really love to get it working

Today i'm install updated Ringtoned 0.2.2 and Custome Ringtone 0.2.2,it's faster then old version, but an old problems comeback again. it's missed sound in some MP3 format (i put my MP3 in memory card). and i try to convert MP3 to acc later.
