Media Converter 1.41 released!
I just released 1.41 of Media Converter (MC)
Latest version is optimized for N800 video playback as well as for the previous 770 optimizations. Stretching problems that came with the latest N800 firmware release are gone and there is a wicked new resolution of 640x368 there. I wrote a bit more along with some links in my blog. Check it out at: http://konttoristhoughts.blogspot.co...-for-n800.html Oh, there are two videos 30 sec previews in the blog as well. If you have a patched N800, please do try them out! |

Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
N800 Medium Quality (400x240) gives error on the N800: "unsupported video resolution".
Using the 770 MPlayer Optimal (400x240) works fine on the N800. Using the (400x240) setting gives the converted video a "widescreen" effect, I like that. |

I have also discovered the wonders of this application http://maxthon.cafedeux.com/smilies/thumbsup.gif
thanks for the new version. off to reconvert a couple of movies http://maxthon.cafedeux.com/smilies/smile.gif |
Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
I would like it if the program would remember which checkboxes I have selected between uses. it remembers some of my selections, N800, Video Resolution, but it does not remember the checkboxes, 30 sec preview, Optimize for 770 etc.

Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
Even though I select N800 as the device, MC 1.41 creates a directory called "700" - can MC use a directory N800 when converting N800 videos, and a 700 directory when converting 700 videos? Remembering preferences mentioned by Tabster would also be a good idea. :)
PS. Version number of 1.41 still says 1.40 :) Edit: Rembering properties/preferences per device would also be good, if possible (ie. remember one set of preferences for N800 and a second set of preferences for the 770). :) |
Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
Works like a charm for me on my Macbook Pro.
Pretty fast too. Thanks for the release! I'm able to get the entire second season of Wild, Wild West as well as Shinsen Subs on two 4GB SDHC cards using this and the quality is pretty good as well. No more boring flights now... |
Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
Can someone please explain in detail the specific steps that are needed to use this program to convert a DVD of TV's shows to files that can be viewed on my N800? I can't seem to figure out what intermediate steps are necessary. THANKS!

Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
ssvb let me know that resolution 512x288 is even better balance between stunning and smooth playback. I'll try to put together a new release today that contains that resolution. Frame rate will still have to be capped a bit, but it will work much smoother than 640x384.

Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
Don't know if mencoder supports it, but it would be nice to have an option where it runs more then one thread (when transcoding).

Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
1.42 released:
New reswolutions (480x288, 800x480). Details and dowload links: http://konttoristhoughts.blogspot.co...42-update.html |

Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!

Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
Must have been my bad. I develop on OSX and apparently while building the install file for xp I had the old version in it. I'll post the latest version in the evening or in saturday morning.

I just want to add that this is a fabulous app! Thanks so much not just for taking the time to develop it, but also to fix and improve it. On behalf of the many users who do not often enough say thanks, I say:
BRAVO! Phillip |

Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
I noticed that there is a new "Convert DVD track:" pop-up, that is greyed out. Is there some configuration necessary for this to be enabled? Or, is it a forthcoming feature?
That's the last item that would make Media Converter perfect for me, because I have to do a 2-step process ATM to convert my DVD collection (unencrypted, of course) for watching on my N800. Thanks for the great app, Konttori! |
Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
Hi, windows users will get a working 1.42 version in the shape of 1.43.
Download from here: https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=26 DVD support is trivial, but I won't do it. Sorry. |
Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
Konttori has released 1.43 (obviously the resolution list fix, as announced). Really great, thanks a lot! While I was waiting for this fix I studied the source code and now I know that new resolutions including frame rates can be defined just by editing Resolutions.txt or resolutions.txt resp.! Well done, konttori!

Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
Anyone else having problems running 1.43 version for XP? I have quite fresh installation of Windows XP SP2 on my laptop and when I install Media Converter and try to start it, some window only flashes on the display and nothing starts up. Does Media Converter need some other components in order to run?

Try maybe to start it from its program directory; perhaps the desktop shortcut is fritzed up. |
Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
Thanks Karel! Guess what, I didn't have Java runtime environment installed on this laptop :)
Off to convert some videos for my N800 Br, Jaykie |
Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
I tried linux version of MediaConverter 1.43 and I noticed that when I select my device (N800) the list of video resolutions doesn't update like it does in XP versions. It only displays 770 video resolutions. So in other words I cannot use 400x240 resolution for my N800. Anyone else with the same problem? Or is there some bug in my java runtime.

Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
When I convert a movie for my N800, I want it to stay in 16:9 ratio. When I run the avi file on my PC it looks fine, but when I play it on the N800 it stretches it to full screen.
I converted one movie a few versions back and it stayed as 16:9 ratio on the N800 but all my recent ones are not. Does anyone know how I can watch movies in the letterbox format on the N800? thanks. |

I did trial conversions of "the Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and "Casino Royale", both for N800, 400X240, deselected the cropped for 770 screen option, 2 passes, enhanced audio and colour. tGtBatU came out squashed vertically and CS exactly the opposite (stretched vertically). The first one is a bog-standard DivX and the second an equally normal XVID. I'm beginning to think Konttori is out of his depth on this one and that I have to start looking for another conversion tool. |
Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
I think Konttori prefers the image to fill the screen and he doesn't test the letterbox format.
Hopefully, he can look into this and resolve the issue |

I think it's a specific N800 media player code problem, in all likeliness yet another "smart" decision by an obscure and incompetent Nokia coder, and I don't see how Konttori will be able to resolve it without access to the media player's source code. We really, really, really need to get rid of Hildon and the rest of the Nokia software trash in the 770/N800 hardware. The machines are fine, but they're constantly f*cked up by stupid corporate drones. |
Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
The linux needs to have the resolutions.txt in users home folder I think.
I'll do some testing on 4:3 videos tomorrow to see how they act. Sorry to anybody if the 4:3 videos have not turned out correctly. If the aspect ration that you had problems with wasn't 4:3, then what was it? |
Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!

Both these movies do display correctly in Mplayer, it's only the native media player that shows its incompetence. I reiterate that it is my firm belief that the responsibility lies with Nokia's coders who -- once again ! -- managed to "upgrade" a working program to a faulty one. |
Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
I am also thinking it could be the N800 software. My converted 16:9 movies look fine on my PC but the same file is stretched vertically to fill the whole screen on the N800 when using Media Player or Canola. (not tried Mplayer)
however, I do still have one movies that I converted with 1.41 (? maybe) that shows in letterbox format on my N800). So, I am not sure what that means. |

Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
I guess MC doesn't do .flv files?
oh well, back to using Super... :( |
Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!

a) I cannot find a way to tell it to compress a file to a certain filesize (playing with bitrates is a hit-and-miss affair, insofar that it's always a miss) and b) as of yet, I've still to find a way to to tell it to reduce a file to a given pixel size; there are lots of preprogrammed video sizes, but none of them suits the N800. I hate distortions. Other than that, it's okay, but because of those problems, I've "converted" (Ahh! the puns! the puns!! They never stop!!!) to VirtualDub, which at least produces files of the size and resolution (more or less) I tell it to and that will play in Mplayer (not the built in media player though...). Also, VirtualDub is a gem for converting DVDs I recorded with my PVR: yanking out the commercials is really easy. Suck on that, Disney. :D |

Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
I still can't get MC to convert .flv files (like from youtube)
The status bar goes to 100% in a second and the resulting file is about 10k, if it doesn't crash outright. Using winXP-sp2 btw |
Re: Media Converter 1.41 released!
Just tried the Linux version. The java program starts fine, but when I click "convert", it complains that "cmd.exe" is missing.
WTF??? This is not Windows, of course there is no cmd.exe! |
