Apple's antenna problem press conference reaction thread
After watching the press conference, I have even more respect for Apple as a company that cares. This whole stupid antenna thing was blown way out of proportion. There is nothing wrong with the iPhone 4 more than any other Phone.
What other company’s CEO would come to talk to the people like this? Instead of acting like a 5 year old and being so fast to release statements about how you “can” hold Nokias any way you want. How about you pay attention to the problem YOUR USERs are facing??! 6 months into the life of the n900 and it’s excluded from being updated to Meego. Mail is still crap. Store is still crap and the list goes on. All the hard labor is on the poor community’s shoulders. The 2 year old 3g can be updated to IOS4 (yes, some features are not there, but IT CAN). What did you do about the issues plaguing the n900, n97? Takes you ages to release an update and we literally have to milk statements out of you. Pulling **** like “oh it’s a mobile computer”. That’s much better. And don’t even get me started about the SMS sending fiasco and how the poor n8 will be released with an already dead platform. Look at the bars drop, I shot this myself, only 1 barely remains and eventually goes away: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DdsdHWzMMQ |

You can't paste a video URL and you want to troll?
Come on. EDIT: http://mynokiablog.com/2010/07/17/ho...it-drop-calls/ |
Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell
So you have an antenna problem in your n900 or what are you saying? I dont think that those bars are comparable:D
I still have to say that Apple handled the issue well in this case. But would the outcome been different they werent able to find an easy solution to the issue at the phone production line (this coating?)? |
Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell
ive ALWAYS WANTED TO SAY THIS :D

Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell
If you're Apple's baby and you're crying, daddy Jobs will come to read a nice fairy tale for you. Sure it may not be based on reality, but it'll make you feel good nonetheless.
If you're Nokia's baby and you're crying, daddy and mommy will make another baby to replace you... oh, and he tells everyone that you're already in college; people may have a rather high expectation from you *g* |
Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell
apple is worse company ever.... the antenna problem is big...u catch N900 in any way and calls will never drop...and apple over that instead of accepting fault says we are giving free covers...cmon any kiddo will know that software update or any cover is not the solution..its design fault. So for mee apple sucks and if u love it too much i think u dont belong here..get the hell outta here and joing the list of ppl fooled by apple!
P.S : The proximity sensor is also **** ! Read this... http://www.gsmarena.com/apple_gets_a...-news-1817.php |
Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell
Oh come on, we cant blindly bash Apple even on this forum. They made a very fair offer, "if you dont like your phone bring it back and get your money back".
Would Nokia ever do that? |
Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell
Apple just has to make 1 phone and can't get the antenna right. Nokia makes 30 or so at any given time and has to manage them all. Really can't compare them.

Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell
I agree to that !

Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell
I actually tend to agree with the basis of this rant.
Nokia are being relatively hypocrit about this all. After years and years of making phones, No phone should dop calls! this is a BASIC feature you know, making calls. So if thats what Nokia is proud of this days i must say it is pathetic. Its never about the mass of error effected devices but about the popularity of that certain device. If the iphone 3g and 3gs wouldnt have got crutial updates to fix some bugs, we would have read about it everywhere. however, nokia kept the n900 in this talk.maemo.org "cage" and we are like "survival" participents who actually have to take care of our own and no one will ever get their 1m$. So since the n900 and the maemo platform in general sold around 100k products, we cant make the same "wave" that is bound to hit Finland's shores and hurt Nokia's Image. And thats what its all about - IMAGE. In conclusion, i have to say that i have been faithful to Nokia, but following their behavior with the n900, this might be my last nokia ever. |
Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell
After fixing your youtube link I tried it for myself.
It lost two bars... and apparently boosted power because it regained full signal in seconds. Make the video again with longer footage. :) |
Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell
Why do people get so irrate?
If you like Apple then buy Apple products. If you like Nokia then buy Nokia. Done. No need to b**** |

Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell
Reason why it's so out there is because Apple uses the media alot so of course news like this is big news too. It goes both ways.
To me the weirdest thing is how Apple reacts to something like this and openly makes the event about bashing other brands. Trying to make all this seem just like what the OP fell too, Apple vs all others. Simply put there is a problem that is acknowledged by consumer reports in it's test and by others, but somehow when it's Apple we talk about everything else that got nothing to do with the problem. Admit it, fix it and move on. |
Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell
It is easy to tell people "if you don't like it return it for a full refund" when most of their customers are "stuck" with apple because of all the money wasted in the app store.
I have workmates that would have changed to the N900 a few months ago, but never did because they have 100's of dollars invested in apps and games. So if you bought an iPhone4 and you are not happy with it, what are you going to do? Go back to the 3Gs? Or just get an iPod touch so you can still use all the apps you invested on? Either way most Apple customers are stuck. |

Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell
come 12 months i guarantee most of you would be holding (no pun intended) n900 as a fantastic device. true that might be because we will have to go through meego's maturity (slow too i would guess) but n900/maemo 5 will be missed.
as for the OP. steve loves attention thats why he talked to his slaves. even then after weeks of ignoring the problem. |

So, tell me, why is this hypocricy of the Nokia baker? |
Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell

Nokia the old, out of touch "hypocritical baker" as you put it, shouldn't be quick to take shots for something they have done well for years but should look to take leaves out of Apples behavior and approach to the consumer and to the phone game. There are a list of Nokia mess ups we could name that were handled less than admirably. Now bake another analogy. |
Re: Sorry, but Nokia hypocrites go to Hell
Though I think the antenna thing was overblown, I think Apple brought it upon themselves. Apple constantly hypes itselfs, and boasts about its extreme attention to detail (just watch one of those weird Ives videos). That sort of behavior and the hype begs people to obsess over your products. Every flaw gets as amplified as a result, as does every feature (I know a few people that think Apple invented video calling because of Facetime hype). Have to stew in your own pot. Can't feel sorry for you.
I do think Nokia was hypocritical to mock the antenna issue, since some of their phone manuals actually note this as a potential problem. I personnaly am satisfied with my N900 as is, but think fanboy-ism from any camp is strange. |

But I can understand this statement to a certain extent. Apple violated patents when developing iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS that involved Nokia's antennae design. Now apparently with iPhone 4, they didn't use Nokia's design..and well..we all know what happened. Apple instead of admitting a design flaw said that users are holding their phone wrong, and pointed their fingers at other companies, claiming that their phones too suffer from these problems. So Apple affronted Nokia twice now. Maybe not directly, but they did. So I do not blame Nokia for this statement, but they should definitely focus their efforts to improve their current flaws, instead of pointing out their competitors ones. |

Tell me this, if Apple were to accuse Nokia for not fixing issues with their devices and/or releasing an immature product while having to face fire from their antenna problems. Wouldnt say that apple is hyprocrite? its shouldnt be about getting some of the stuff right, it about making it all right.(Nokia: "Hey look! Our antennas are fine! come to this side of the fence!") Well, thats exacly what Nokia just did with this pointless remark. |

RIM put it well on their response: "Apple's attempt to draw RIM into Apple's self-made debacle is unacceptable" |
Re: Apple's antenna problem press conference reactions thread
But that is not what Apple said. They claimed they were not the only manufacturer that faced antenna problems. So it was far from a generic statement about the quality of service of Apples' competitors but a very specific accusation on the antenna issue. There are lots of problems for Nokia to face, but afaik, this is not one of them.
|
Re: Apple's antenna problem press conference reaction thread
Well its a bit lame of Apple to sling mud to cover up their own fault if that is the case. But Nokia's manufactured adverts claiming working Antennae's as a feature was lame as well. Should have spent that money to make their customers happier.
|
Re: Apple's antenna problem press conference reaction thread
Nokia only got into this because Apple mentioned them ( along with other) in their dubious presentation in attempt to deflect from its embarrassing flawed antenna issue. So Apple handled it ok by giving a bumper, defaming competitors and quoting dodgy statistics ?? Are you so naive to fall for that display of smoke and mirrors?.
So you expect Nokia to sit back and take this defamation on the chin?. Nokia did not even go far enough for me, they could have mentioned that pre IPhone 4 devices featured stolen Nokia antenna patents which forced Apple into this debacle. Say what you like, but the N900 has no design flaw whatsoever, I have been using it since October and while it could do most things better, its antenna functions as needed and I will choose it over the defective iPhoney 4 any day. Next ? |
Re: Apple's antenna problem press conference reaction thread
You mean Nokia is actually running some kind of advertisement, claiming their antennas do work? Or did you consider Nokias´ reaction to Apples´ press conference a form of advertisement? In case of the latter, you'll have to admit that Nokia played it smart, while Apple pays the bill for this advertisement campaign of Nokia and others.

There was something else as well. Apple is definitely paying for it though its hard to tell just at this point. All this TV, Web and Newpaper press is free advertisement as well. |

Re: Apple's antenna problem press conference reaction thread
Sorry, imperiallight, but I don´t see the problem with the link you provided. Quite the opposite actually. The name Apple is not being mentioned, not even a hint at any competitors´ performance. Just a slightly uninteresting article about different ways of holding your phone. One thing is true though; someone at Apple could have taken notice of the article to benefit Apples´ cause.
The usb thing is way off topic... |
Re: Apple's antenna problem press conference reaction thread
Stop treating these companies like they're people.
You can't judge them as you would your friends or family. They play by different rules and regulations. |

:) *** No analogies or metaphors here. The general differences between Apple and Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, et al are: 1. The other companies make other models. Any design flaw that develops through the use of one of those models doesn't necessarily affect all of their models. 2. Apple from the start has elevated "user experience" to the top of a phones feature list. "Awesome, unbelievable, the first, a real game changer" are some of the hyperbole used by Apple to describe it. Apple changed what customers now expect of all the others with this dialog. Apple has aggressively defended patents like "multi-touch" and whatnot because of the value that they assigned to "user experience" and this is where there might be hypocrisy. Apples business plan is under attack. One way out of this jam is to spread the liability over multiple models and dilute any brand liability that arises from a flaw in one particular model. Apple can't because they don't have anything else. As a result, they did the only thing available at the time and that was to attempt to change the brand liability dialog to a general cell phone one in order lay that liability off on to all the others... Not cool, IMHO. To illustrate this three card Monty technique that Apple is using I'll now post an analogy, even though I started this dialog with the statement... Quote:
It would be like Toyota in response to one of their recent safety recalls stating that: "... all cars can experience sudden, rapid accelleration." While this maybe true they left out "...without the drivers input." We would have no problem if Ford highlighted this omission and took exception to being included in Toyota's generality. Nokia is doing the same. I'll end with a homily: Quote:
