What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

Just trying to see what others are using out there. The built-in browser or Firefox (or something else?)...what do you think of it (or them)?

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

Micro B the built in browser is fine and I use that.

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

Using a combination of Firefox (for Weave) and Opera (quick browsing).

I love the features of firefox, but it takes too long to load, so generally I use the built-in.

Opera is (by far) the best browser in every platform it runs.

I want desktop pages on my mobile and that is one of the reasons why i have N900 in my pocket.

I have Firefox and Chrome installed, but i prefer MicroB as it faster than the other two.

I havnt tried Opera, not sure it will open dektop pages or mobile pages .. would need some advices here

Just like on desktop, have to use different browsers for different sites because things can never "just work" on the web...

You have to try Opera, it's been so long when it was launch and i havnt use it as well, but now i like Opera its very fast and very friendly outlook.

I like Firefox, but like what other says, it's takes long before it load and sometime encountering bugs that cause delay browsing.

I always use micro B and have never had any problems with it. The only thing missing is the option to close a window in prtrait mode, wich can be annoying. I wonder if meego will have micro b? Who needs apps with a killing browser?

Thanks but , doest it bring you the desktop / mobile version of webpages? that is my concern

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

I tested Firefox and Opera, but returned to MicroB. Great browser, eventhough links do not open at a first click all the time.

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

Mostly Firefox. It is a lot faster now after 1.1. Sometimes microB (hate that it opens a new window all the time).

Have tried Chromium but it takes too much cpu and Opera don't have flash.

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

Here's what I like so far.

The startup speed of micro b.
The rendering and extension engines of Firefox.
The UI of Opera.

If they would work together on a browser...that will be the ultimate one!

You can choose which one you want in settings. If only opera link also synced the passwords it would be the perfect.

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

I use microB, mainly because it's faster than FF. I don't like the way firefox struggles with rendering pages and scrolling. I love the tabs, pdf print and add-ons though. I wish microB could have those.

Micro B and opera. Don't like the interface of firefox and the advanced features I want don't translate well to a small screen.

Then you haven't tried Firefox 1.1 it renders the pages a lot faster than microB. Also by clicking ctrl+link it opens in a new background tab instead of a foreground window.

Could be very handy, but possibly very dangerous.

This always depends on the website you're visiting. The browser just states its user agent string, and the rest is up to the webserver.
So you cannot clearly answer this question.

Microb and/or firefox and the word "fast" in the same phrase

3G and above, micro B is used. 2.5G and below, Opera is the way to go.

opera ftw, and has a great portrait mode keyboard

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

Fennec is really nice albeit slow. I really like the way it zooms and reflows mobile sites like the android browser to make them readable. I also like how that, with the exception of text entry it doesn't ever require you to leave portrait mode. If Opera could do anything other than fixed zoom, I'd probably be bringing it up too.

I'm still waiting for one that properly supports whatever it is that makes the android/iphone gmail site work (HTML5?).

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

I would use Firefox... but what annoys me is how the browser chugs hard while rendering a page so I can't pan around the page without it getting really choppy. Once it loads it's just beautiful.

So I stick to MicroB, which what annoys me the most is that it takes so long sometimes to "connect" to a website (resolve DNS maybe? I'm not an expert) even on wifi

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

Normally MicroB, because i love it.
Opera Mobile when connection is slow or i want a nice portrait mode
Firefox Mobile for betathome.at, the only working for this site

If you install the user agent switcher extension in Firefox you could set an iPhone user agent and go to GMail, it should load the iPhone version. Don't forget to clear your cookies before though ;)

Even engadget said that microB was the best browser currently on the market, that has to count for something

Mentalist Traceur 2010-07-18 15:38

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

Use MicroB mostly. Opera sometimes, because it has the convenience of portrait keyboard, but once the currently somewhat-not-progressing universal portrait keyboard for the N900 gets developed into something that works without bugs, I don't expect to see myself using anything but MicroB. For the time being, I'm just not a fan of Firefox (and yes, I tried 1.1). It's got some neat ideas but I'm significantly more in love with MicroB and how it does everything.

The only thing that will make me switch is if I still have the N900 long enough that MicroB becomes so outdated that it's useless.

Venemo 2010-07-18 15:45

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

Most of the time, I just use MicroB. It is nice, and it is the one that integrates the best with the operating system.

I liked Firefox Mobile, too, but it seemed very much unfinished and unoptimized last time I tried it.

I also tested Tear some months ago (but it was buggy then). I may test it again in some time.

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

using the Firefox now, but it doesnt have a portraitmode keyboard, which... well... makes it not as good as MicroB. Ive tried Opera as well today, and it reverts to mobile versions on most sites (Facebook being a big one for me, personally).

Im probably sticking to MicroB.

my vote goes for firefox n opera huhu

The_Solutor 2010-07-18 19:24

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

The poor browser was the main reason that forced me to switch from n900 to the milestone. Now opera is back to maemo, and the n900 is back on my hands.

That said, when in december i bought the milestone (after two monts of n900 usage) was greatly inferior to the n900 in different aspects.

Now the milestone is almost a completely different device, its battery was lasting in 6 ours (@550Mhz), its browser was poor, operamini was far from perfect, no tethering, no flash support, and so on.

Now (after six months) operamini for android is simply amazing, the battery covers more than a whole day (@1000 Mhz),it is incredibly fast, there is a wide range of customized roms, there is a wide range of tethering solutions working in access point mode and with wpa2 enabled, there is the just in time compiler and so on.

I still love the n900, it's openness and the idea behind it, but sadly I have to admit that android world runs while maemo/meego world is just slowly walking.

In that perspective, if microb seem poor and slow when compared to opera for maemo, it looks simply a stone age browser if compared to operamini for android and with some other android browsers skyfire, dolphin and so on.

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

Microb: Excellent, but no tab/open in background support. Also, could make better use of space. E.g., progress bar only needs a progress, not whole address. Few addons.

Fennec: Great, but slow. So slow. Too slow. Few addons.

Ice Weasel: Excellent, somehow less slow than Fennec, but no flash. Actual addons.

MicroB here mostly.
Although I like Opera UI better...

Re: What internet browser do you use on the N900, and are you happy with it?

(since you asked FWIW).

I started using the dillo browser with tabs this weekend. This is faster than anything else I've seen. Not having javascript/flash/css is sometimes nice, and definitely speeds things up when you just want info quickly. Yet there's a lot of sites that you just can't view at all. The same goes for the netsurf browser.

Also using emacs-w3m and chromium. (Chromium is fast/full-featured, but still very buggy on armel.)

Other than that, I still use firefox, microb and epiphany. By "firefox" I mean the full firefox, not the mobile version (fennec). I tried fennec, but that was very frustrating.

Microb is still the most finger friendly, and firefox is the slowest, but most full featured. Google maps seems to work best in microb too.

Very difficult to run microb without hildon-desktop, and I don't like running hildon-desktop, so I generally don't use microb, though I wish I could use it more.

Honestly, I'm not happy with the current state of internet browsers in general, be it on maemo, windows, mac, sun, etc... It's ridiculous to have so many browsers. Personally I blame corporate web developers that build stupid features into their websites especially checking browser id strings and activeX stuff.
