I have the same problem. Actually happening as I type this message. It's annoying. I usually just reboot it or just let it chill out for a bit.

It's not going to return old messages though, you'll be back at zero, but at least they'll start being logged again.

Re: n900 conversations disappearing!!!

if you return conversations from backup, it brings the corrupt database(?!?) along. so don't return conversations from backup.

just remove
Code:

/home/user/.rtcom-eventlogger/el.db
and see if problem disappears along with conversations.
(you might need to recreate the file, with command)
Code:

touch /home/user/.rtcom-eventlogger/el.db
if you know how to handle sqlite, you could try fixing the database instead of removing it.

thanks a million. i kinda figured that but here is the thing. i have about 4500 text message from my clients that i need to keep. is there a way i can manually export my messages out and convert them to excell?
im gonna try your third option to try and repair the database. thanks. hopes this works

Re: n900 conversations disappearing!!!

If you transfer that file over to a computer you should be able to extract all data, or convert it to a excel file if you wish. Not sure if it's possible to open that database in Excel directly though.

I'd copy the file to /home/user/MyDocs, plug n900 to pc, copy the file to your pc and see if you can open it with some application. db format is sqlite3. when you have the copy in mydocs, it can be pretty safely deleted from original location.

Look man this phone isn't worth the headache, head to a blackberry or htc if you're not willing to shell out for the best phone available on the market (iphone). You'll make **** 100x easier on yourself.

The real question is: what phone isn't?

N900 in practice is a souped up N95 with a touch screen and a half finished open source OS, but with far less applications

Re: n900 conversations disappearing!!!

Just a quick poll for any body that is currently suffering from this problem or that has suffered from this problem. Have you guys/ girls been able to install new applications or did you get an insufficient memory error? It is my theory that these two problems are directly related of which the root cause is a memory calculation error in the N900's firmware. Please, someone else test this if they are experiencing the problem to see if this holds true.

Thanks,
Kham

Turning the phone off and on fixes the thing for me - all messages are again visible.

BTW, part of the widgets vanishes again and again from the desktop.
No one will be bored with N900... :-/

Re: n900 conversations disappearing!!!

You might run out of rootfs space. Look up the wiki for rootfs, there you might find an article for opening up some space.

Re: n900 conversations disappearing!!!

Yes I'm having the same problem. My conversations are sporadic. For example, I get 6 msgs at once, and can only view 1 of them. All my conversation history has disappeared, and all my call logs have disappeared. This started happening about a week ago. Have done nothing to my phone of note.

Only app I installed was the level pack 2 expansion for angry birds. If I turn the phone off and on, it seems to try and download every conversation (ie. txt msg) from the last week, but then, nothing in conversations.

Kham 2010-07-30 03:32

Re: n900 conversations disappearing!!!

gsever, I agree that Root space must be the issue. However, I don't believe that it is actual root space, but possibly perceived root space by the Maemo firmware. If someone could please try and install an app when they are actually having this problem, then we can get a better idea of whether it is a root issue or not.

the real question is what the criteria are.

just keep in mind that if this would have happened with apple (friend just got all his data wiped out when iTunes froze completely) there is nothing to do.

Re: n900 conversations disappearing!!!

hi, no I haven't..... still trawling through "no conversation history n900" as a google search to try and find an answer.

If anyone can help - when I select Conversations, it says no conversation history. If someone SMS's me, I can see the entire history of conversations with that person, but they have to SMS me.

The only other issue that showed up about the time of this issue, is that I have no call history.

Found this command when googling "nokia n900 conversations reset":

http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/archive/t-1079690.html

the command:

rm -rf .rtcom-eventlogger

worked for me! It also kept my previous conversation history, which is always good.. and it also started keeping call history again as well.

Cheers,

Alex

Re: n900 conversations disappearing!!!

And me too, but only for one contact.
It's not free space issue. I have 12Mb/800Mb/>1Gb on root/home/MyDocs and can install new apps without any problems.
I can assume that this can be caused by some smileys which are similar to sql syntax or by renaming the contact. Or by extending it's data with some non-typical information. Or by some conversations addons: I have Skype, GoogleTalk, ICQ, Ovi and Vkontakte (russian [anti]social network, clone of facebook that enabled jabber for all users) accounts activated at least once.

Another symptom is that for this contact statuses of new messages cannot be updated: I can see notification that sms was delivered, but in conversation window it's still can be seen as awaiting to be sent.

Will try to see .db

I just deleted db and will try to analyze them if the problem repeats, but for someone who wants to investigate the situation the commands are:
Quote:

sqlite3 ~/rtcom-eventlogger/el*.db
.help
.tables
select * from Events;

How to make backups of conversations

I have a slightly different question: how do I make backups of the conversation? I guess it's in a text file; I'll eventually figure out how to read the format if it's not in the standard format, but I need to know in what file/directory the conversations are stored.

It's in an sqlite database at ~/.rtcom-eventlogger/el-v1.db

Use sqlite3 to manipulate the database.

Thanks, but after flashing PR1.3 bug didn't repeat, so I'll wait.

Who added "troll" tag to thread? Why? It's real problem. (Or at least was.)

Same here with my wife's N900. It's only happening with one of her contacts and always the same contact when the problem arises. Some of the messages disappear or it shows her messages a day or few days old. Plus it shows the actual phone number rather than the contacts name that my wife has her saved under.

She did a battery pull and restart and only temporarily fixes the problem. I hope she doesn't have to do a flash or anything serious just because of one contact.

Re: n900 conversations disappearing!!!

So if I'm going a little off topic here guys but it's only because I can't seem to find the answer anywhere and no one will respond to my question in another thread.

I have fMMS with a bunch of picture messages, maybe over 60-70 of them still on my N900. Only way I'm seeing to delete them is literally one by one.

Is there a way to select all or more than one and delete? That would be helpful since if I have to do each one seperate, it would take very long and be super annoying.

Any help would be appreciated!

Found a workaround for this today - the problem occurs because the Headers table in the /home/user/.rtcom-eventlogger/el-v1.db becomes corrupt. Happily this is repairable, on the device:

First gain root access:
Code:

sudo gainroot
..then switch to the target directory:
Code:

cd .rtcom-eventlogger
Now dump the contents of the existing database to a raw SQL file:
Code:

sqlite3 el-v1.db .dump > el-v1.db.sql
Restore the SQL to a new database:
Code:

sqlite3 el-v1.db.new < el-v1.db.sql
You may ignore SQL errors at this stage; they occur due to corruption in the source.

Now overwrite the broken DB (you may wish to back up the original file):
Code:

cp el-v1.db.new el-v1.db
Finally, ensure that the file is owned by 'user' and is in the 'users' group so it may be read by Conversations
Code:

chown user el-v1.db
chgrp users el-v1.db

Now close and re-open your Conversations app - the changes should be immediate!

Hope this helps,

Alex
