Recently my lens cover hasnt been activating my camera app. I have to start the camera app via shortcut or shutter button.

What did I break?

Maybe something wrong with the sensor of the camera.

If you take the back cover off, you should see two rectangles, one black and one white, on the camera door.
These seem to be positioned over a little LED/photosensor combination - You should check to make sure there is no dirt or anything covering those.

Check the output of dmesg in terminal to see if the shutter is being detected or not. I have a similar problem and it seems to be an app locking audio so the camera app can't open.

Mine wasn't working either, although most of the time I only wanted to use flashlight so that was fine... although i've recently replaced the little magnet on the back stand, and why I was there i gave it a good old clean...

Since then the camera app opens every time i open lens... however flash light (and gsm/3g button in status menu) has gone!

Without the magnet on the back cover, the phone ignoes the position of the camera door.

So I read the other forum, and I noticed my magnet under the kick stand is gone. The question is can i replace that with any kind of magnet?

from what imve seen on other threads her, pretty much yeah. been a few story's/pics of people cutting up and gluing on fridge magnets etc.

My fault, I think Im confused on what the back sensor is and the lens sensor is. i guess there is a sensor for the whole back cover because my memory card is not working. Where is this back cover sensor?

its the same magnet i believe, also keeps the kickstand from falling away. useful little bugger eh?

After kicking of fCamera an rebooting everything´s working fine again.

actually there may be another magnet for the lens cover (the black square next to the white one? never heard of that falling off though!) however if the kickstand/cover magnet is missing then the phone thinks the back is off and will ignore whatever the lens cover says since it doesn't believe the lens cover is there

Nah, that's an optical sensor, not a magnet.

found a strong enough magnet, and it fixed the lens slider camera app problem and not recognizing my memory card problem! thank god, I didnt want to send it in for repair!

if you could post a pic of that magnet and where you fixed, that would be great, so if other have the same issue, they can look and easily try it out, instead of opening threads

Hey got the problem where my phone is effectively not recognising the back cover...this was my fault seeing as i dropped my phone onto tiles this morning :/ But you would be a legend if you could shove a photo up or link us to a photo of it!! Thanks!

Where did you find the magnet?

Some suggestions on where to easily source a replacement would be a big help to some people too.

My idea is to go to any general store/hardware store and purchase one of those rubberized fridge magnets and cut a small enough piece off with a sharp craft knife, then just fashion it to shape and size.

Just noticed this is already mentioned earlier in the thread :o

In a similar vein. Whenever I've been giving my 900 a bit of a clean and brushed my finger over the recess near the camera lens the handset has buzzed, as if the lens cover has been opened, so I think the camera relies on both the optical and magnetic sensors working.

I haven't searched or read up on it, but yeah, my impression was that fcam has a "feature" where if you were using it the last time you had the camera lens open, it prevents the camera app from starting automatically the next time you open the camera lens. Though I haven't tested to see what magical steps truly makes that happen, it seems like that'd be really convenient for those that regularly use fcam over the default camera app.

Either way, manually starting the default camera app seems to reconnect it to the sliding cover action again for me (at least up until I use fcam again). Keeping shortcuts on a desktop for easy access to both apps relieves most of the pain if you do use both apps.

A thick fridge magnet will do. A thick enough magnet that's easy enough to cut with a box cutter shouldn't be hard to find.
