Customize Google Map for N900
 

Hello everyone.....

I have developed a google Map for our N900.

Here is what you can do with it...
You can search for address
Search for direction
Show you current Location.
I have added buttons for Panning the map in all 4 direction.
Zoom in and Zoom out is also working

Congrats, it's very nice, especially the full screen streetview. Bookmarking it right now :)

Please try to add keys to rotate up-down your viewport when in streetview.

this is a very nice start! Thanks.
It's great to see google maps on the N900.
Some ideas:
- it would be good to make the arrows/buttons to move the map a bit bigger, because I've missed them a few times and than zoomed in pretty far
- it would be very nice to be able to move the map with the fingers
- it would be nice to search whats near me, e.g. restaurants, bar, shop, etc.

Having full-screen street view is just great. The interface is nicer than maemap, but usability could be improved by making the buttons larger. Also the zoom in/zoom out buttons could be separate further to make them easier to touch. Besides, the scripting is slow and every actions there is about 2-second delay.

It would be very useful if you can add place search and improve the speed.

Can't seem to be able to go back to map from streetview; and gps positioning doesn't seem to work in my hands (sets map to the latest gps position, not to the present one).

Could the map be pointed to a local google maps site (e.g. other languages), say http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=iw

Any way you can publish the whole dir of the code and images?

That way it can be put on the N900 and ran locally?

Do you have a privacy policy for this?

What do you do with the information you receive. Do you sell it to 3rd parties, do you sift through it out of idle curiosity?, do you log or store it, and if yes, for how long, what data points do you store, and so on...

It is nice but it is not possible to exit streetview (or the grey screen when there is no streetview data).
Can you please fix that?

To exit streetview do click the tiny cross in the upper right corner :)

Hmm, after I enter streetview the page auto reloads and exits streetview. Strange, any idea?

I am trying to improve the App. adding butons and some more functions...

One idea could be a button to show the google streetview overlay - so you know which streets are covered and which are not. Like in http://www.tomch.com/maemaps.html , V button.

I just gone through all the post...

Guys I dont store or log any user activity.
The msgbox you see for ur location is just if you wish to use ur location...

I am still working on the code. but I will provide the code for everyone to work and to store and run it locally on ur N900.....

Hey Guys need help...

I have put an event on click on the map. So as you click on any park of the map. it will show the street view of that area.

Please can you give me advice that is this functionality good or frustating??

I think this is useful gmap. however, i have some suggestion for that version. if you could write an app for N900 that would be awesome. because running on browser is painful. the navigations buttons seem small and not respondsive sometime, hard to see, the arrow sign isnt standout. zooming button is overlap with gmap defalut clock wheel. should include bigger rotation button to avoide using n900 stylus. address search box should be larger for easy viewing, at lease 75% of total screen, 3 functions button should be redesign, cos i really have no idea what the other two represent until i click on it.

Nikul please that streetview event isn't so good. It makes impossible to use hover mode and move the map, that in my opinion is better than using the arrows.
Also, place finding seems to have stopped working.

Nice. Looking forward to development. Would you please consider zooming out the start page to 2000 miles, as not everybody lives in Fresno ;-)

:) I know actully it should pan to the location of your device. Coz I have hardcoded fresno for testing purpose but as soon as it gets your device location the map should center on it

Can you test that for me? and let me know is that is not the case.

Sure I am working on it. Plus I see we are having trouble in searcing GUI so I am making it bigger. (Easy to enter search items :) )

This would be a killer app if it suppored traffic overlay and Latitude...

Waited for 10 min. did not lock in on my location. How should this work? Should it use the internal gps?

yes It does use internal GPS but it needs internet connection..

@ the time of loading the app it ask you to allow your location.
Which mobile browser are you using??

Hello guys I saw many ppl have their doubts about the location msg on load.
but you can try the same url on your computer and your regular browser will also ask for your permission. its nothing but a way of your browser to ask if it can use your current location or not.

I will make the source-code available to anyone once I am done working on it. so you can check that I am not logging any activity or users locations.

Thanks guys.... I have done some more redesigning.
1> I have redesign the GUI - Bigger buttons,
2> shows your location ( a small green flag in the center).
3> You can search an Address, ( I am not sure why the local business is now stopped. example... Nike store in San Fransisco, when I was testing it locally .. it was working fine.)
4> you can tap on the flag or marker to see the street view.
5> clicking the street View will show the street view of the center of the map.
6> bigger fonts and buttons for search box....
7> Panning in the map as well as Street view works faster...( I guess :D )

Future development that I am planning....

1> Fix the searching of local POI. so you can search all the pizza place near your location and put one of them as a destination for driving direction. an Njoy hot pizza.

2> Refresh own location every 5 sec or so... ( this will help while driving, you will be able to see the map updates your position. and zooms in as you get closer to a location )

3> Driving direction in List view.

as I am testing on the server it self the application may be down or give you some other results for some more days. plz bare.

One more thing I am in US so can anyone from other part of the world share their experience as of accuracy and all. will be much helpful. I will provide the source code to anyone from coming Monday. Let me know if anyone needs it. :cool:

It works very well here in Holland. Also getting your location, accuracy is fine.
(note: anyone who refused sharing their location to this or other sites, and wants to reverse this; these permissions are saved in a separate file, permissions.sqlite in the /home/user/.mozilla/.microb directory I believe (delete/rename at your own risk! But I did and it worked).

The search function seems to work better than that of Maemaps, it found a place that Maemap didn't.
What Maemaps does have over this is that it lists the route below the map view, after getting a direction.

What would be nice is to have a list of possible search hits, like you get in the desktop version of google maps.
There you can also drag the route around with the mouse, and add waypoints. I know that's asking too much though, thanks so far!

Some More improvement.

Search your local business, (search for Pizza, Juice, Indian food) and the map should search near your location.

It's nice to view street maps this easy, now I can locate other shops and stores nearby if I'm not sure whether I'm walking the right direction to the correct place.

Can you make it fill the avalible screen space.
ie: When you press the browser's fullscreen button the tile & url bars appear but the map does not resize and you need to scroll, this would also benefit portrait mode which does not work (the main reason for me mentioning it)

would it be possible to add "joystick" to lower right corner. A bit like in game destroid. So that you could pan just by moving joystick on screen.
