Archos 5 Internet Tablet

Kinda an old but it is still very capable link here http://www.archos.com/products/imt/a...try=us&lang=en
it has
Processor 800mhz OMAP3440
Ram 256mb
Wifi 802.11 b/g/n
Storage ranges from 32gb, 160gb, 500gb
Screen 4.8 inches 800x480 resistive touchscreen
Os Android 1.6 with some Archos enhancements/addons
Most importantly about this device can have have an installation of Angstrom Linux on it link here http://www.archos.com/products/imt/a...try=us&lang=en and here http://www.archos.com/products/imt/a...try=us&lang=en
The specs seem pretty good and no can touch Archos for portable media playback. I do like resistive touchscreens. As a Linux/Android mid this device is very capable.

indeed, and the 8GB model is affordable, imo. Especially the angstrom option makes it interesting, even more so if archos have made it possible to use the addons (usb host and video out dock in particular).

tho there seems to be a even cheaper option coming from archos, the recently leaked archos32. between that and the samsung galaxy touch/yepp, i am on the fence.

But the Archos32 rumored to have 3.2" display at 400 × 240 resolution

not much different from the ipod touch, and people found that acceptable. Also it will have usb host and video out, meaning one could potentially turn it into a pocket android computer if hooked up to a tv and adding a keyboard.

Re: Archos 5 Internet Tablet

My friend let me borrow his archos 5 android. Its good device but its short comings bring it down.
Resistive touch screen isn't the best, only has android 1.6, and I have issues with wifi that need a complete reboot to fix.

If u want something to watch videos and browsing its a good device. But somehow I think I liked my n810 better.

Maybe with the next archos device they'll improve on the negatives. Or maybe nokia will come out with a nice meego tablet better than the 810.

It looks nothing like a a ipod touch for one thing the design is different and it runs a different operating system.

Well the Nokia n810 simply isn't a good value compared to the Archos 5.
Archos wifi is 802.11b/g/n while the n810 has 400mhz processor, Archos 5 processor is 800mhz, Screen on Archos 5 is 5 inch screen on Nokia n810 is 4.1 inch, ram on n810 is 128mb while its 256mb on Archos. The Archos 5 I can find 270 usd for 32gb while the Nokia n810 I find for 300-400 usd for only 2gb of storage.

Maybe this better, if all things were equal, I would def take the nokia 810, even if its pricier.

As to price, you would really have to compare an N8x0 from eBay since the NITs are discontinued, and you'll find like-new for $90-200.

Comparing storage and not noting that the Nokia has a microSD slot, and the Archos doesn't, is really putting the apples up against the oranges.

Reading the reviews of the Archos 5 on Amazon, at first I thought the units were so problem-plagued that you were way off in preferring it; but reading the newer reviews, after Archos released various bug-fixes, does make it sound like a pretty great tablet.

Most impressive in this regard was one by "B. Forsberg," whom I suppose was the Bruce Forsberg who used to be on this forum (and had karma of 390):

I just got mine a week ago and so far I love this tablet. My first tablet was the Nokia N800 and N810. This is far superior to these. The video playback is fantastic. The browser experience is great, better then my laptop. I also got the DVR station. It comes with the HD plugin. With this plugin I am able to play vob formatted video files as is. I always had to down convert the files for the Nokia tablets. Their appslib market is much better then the Nokia market at [...] with more apps being added all the time.

Actually th archos does have a Microsd card slot it mentions on the Amazon page here http://www.amazon.com/Archos-32-Inte...pr_product_top. As for the problems from what I have heard in reviews that firmware updates fix the glitches.

I have the 16 gig with the latest firmware and still experience the wifi problem.

wifi problem? is it in any way related to the power saving issue that can happen between the N8x0 and a somewhat older hotspot?

You really don't need a memory card slot with 160gb or 500gb of storage.

Not sure about the wifi problem as i've never experienced it on my n810.

But here is the quick version of the archos wifi problem I experience.

I'm online on my home router, everything works fine then all of sudden my connection drops. I go to settings, try to turn off wifi then I get an error message saying that wifi can not be turned off. I can't connect to wifi nor can I turn off wifi. Only resoulution is to restart the device.

That and the touchscreen that isn't as good as the n810 are my two biggest gripes with the archos.

Besides that it's a lovely device.

tso 2010-08-05 16:35

Re: Archos 5 Internet Tablet

hmm, that could be a software or a hardware issue. And not at all similar to the N8x0 wifi issue (basically if you have a older hotspot, when the N8x0 attempts to power save on the wifi the connection will sometimes stall as the hotspot thinks the N8x0 have disconnected or something like that).

I find that the hardware keyboard and SD slots on the N810 are better than on the Archos. Oh wait.... :)

The Archos 8gb, 16gb, and 32gb versions have microsd card slots while the n810 has minisd card slot. However 160gb and 500gb versions don't have memory card slots. As for the physical keyboard on the n810 is decent but not enough to be a deal maker for me if it was as good as the keyboard on the Htc Touch Pro 2 or MyTouch 3g Slide then you may have an argument but the virtual on one the Archos is just fine.

I wonder does the Nokia n810 have an fm radio or fm transmitter. I know the n900 does but that thing is way more expensive.

@railroadmaster
N800 has a FM radio. No transmitter (only Nokias that do are AFAIK N97 and N900). Good luck finding a N800 though.

Actually it can do it without the car doc you go into the settings and fm transmitter and select where you want to to transmit sound to.

hmm, interesting. I thought i read a update log claiming that it had become dependent on detecting the car dock.

Actually in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZjSoKn01VU it show the fm transmitter about to be used.

that video is nearly a year old. There have been quite a few firmware updates since that video got made.

ah, here we go: http://wiki.archosfans.com/index.php...FM_Transmitter

note this bit:
Quote:

The FM transmitter option no longer works simply by using a pair of headphones. That option was deemed as inferior and because it didn't work for so many, Archos now requires the use of the car mount's car charger cable for the FM transmitter to be activated.

you don't actually need the mount it is just a nice accessory for your car.

thing is, you have to look at the times those reviews where made. When the archos 5 first shipped back around new year, the radio transmitter worked as you have read. But more recently archos released a firmware update that disabled the transmitter unless it detected the presence of the car dock (as it provides a much better antenna then just using headphones).

for instance, that video you linked to was made and uploaded back in december 2009. We are now writing august 2010. Thats 8 months where things have changed. And this have changed, just look at this list of updates: http://update.archos.com/7/archos5/c...e_archos5.html

Sadly, archos do not mention the car dock change there.

and funny enough, checking the archosfan forum, it seems that the actual part of the car dock that do the "magic" trick is the charger. And it do not even need to be plugged into the car to work, just the archos. Makes one wonder why they have to made a transmitter snap-on, like the dvr snap-on or similar.

Wells thats a downer but I can live I think it would be more fair to compare a Archos 5 to a Nokia n900. Also I watched videos on youtube it seems like you need the the car connector cable. However the archos 5 does seem pretty nice.

If anyone wants this, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet with 32GB is $199.99 with Promotional Code EMCYXNR35 through 9-30.

Says only for subscribers to the NewEgg newsletter, but you can probably finesse it.

Note that its user ratings are pretty uneven.

Forgot to say that I bought an Archos 5 60gb (gen 6, pre-Android) for very low price recently. So far no wifi problems. Video playing is outstanding; Web browsing very good (UI too primitive though). My biggest complaint is audio: no stereo sound from built-in speakers. I may sell it just for this reason.

If I didn't know that an armada of new Archos Android tablets was on the way, I could get excited about this this price drop.

Re: Archos 5 Internet Tablet

I decided not to get the Archos 43 and just get the Archos 5 because it is easier to buy and it is cheaper. Despite the flaws of all of the Archos devices there great devices with lots of potential and I mean all of the Archos devices. Anyways I can't wait to get it and install Angstrom on it I was disappointed by the Nokia n900 got tired of waiting for the Openpandora, the SmartQ devices have poor specs, and the Viliv s5/n5 cost way to much money for me, so fore me the Archos devices offer the same benefits of being pocket computer with Linux but at a much more reasonable price for the specs. Also the Archos 5 runs MeeGo http://liliputing.com/2010/12/could-...r-tablets.html and Froyo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTbxLg_ifVU so in conclusion the Archos 5 is still epic.
