Get the N900 or Wait?
Well, I live in Australia. The N900 is here and available, and I love the look of Maemo 5. I also played around with the phone in a store. I really like the phone overall. Now, I played around with the Meego beta for netbooks. Obviously it will be different on a handset, but still. I am very close to purhcasing the N900. My parents are pretty strict on phones. I will be signing up on a 2 year plan. As with all phones, in about 6 months, the phone will be outdated, as with all android phones, iphones and everything. I must stick with the plan until it's over, and I get 1gb of data each month, so that's nice. I want to know I am making the right decision.
My understanding of the phone is that Nokia will not be supporting an official Meego release. I am confident the community will support one, and NITDroid is a very smooth project, but I won't be installing it, or using it until I can make a phone call. :| Overall, I think I really want this phone. Even if the community dies in a year or so, I will be fine. Just one question about Evernote, as it keeps all my notes, stuff to read on the train, homework, study and practically everything, I need to know, is there a client for it? Or is it just some photo sharing program? Will I be able to read my notes on the phone? Thanks |

Re: Get the N900 or Wait?
The reason I did not say what my new phone is after selling my N900 was not to start another endless discussion.....
It goes without saying and I speak for myself, I will never buy another Nokia product in the foreseeable future unless they convince me that they are serious about developing a smart phone that they can commit to and go the distance against the competition. Until then.... hello competition :) |
Re: Get the N900 or Wait?
i would get the n900 used, get an android phone with the plan. might as well get the most expensive phone possible with the plan. and a used n900 should be easy to come by, as you can see..

OP, it really depends on what you want. There are a lot of fanboys on either side. If you like the way the Maemo 5 OS operates, like the features of the N900, and understand that any future support from Nokia is spotty at best... Go ahead. Just make sure you understand that you are buying what is actually there, not what -might- be there in the future(Like a lot of anti-N900 fanboys seem to have done). Personally, I like it - Linux OS, Open, not Android or iOS, and OC-able. But then again, as I said at the beginning of this post, I only paid $315 for mine, not $500+ like some did. -Rob |
Re: Get the N900 or Wait?
I wouldn't sign the contract. Yea, you pay less for the phone in the beginning, but you end up paying a lot more at the end. About your question, if you like linux then take it. If you don't know anything about linux and care about availability of games/programs then don't take it.
And reading notes from the n900 is not really comfortable (at least for me). The screen is big, but it's not big enough. |
Re: Get the N900 or Wait?
My recommendation is do not buy the N900, to be correctly saying it, I would say do not buy any other Nokia products anytime this year or next. I don't think Nokia products will be any good anymore. Kudo to Android and Apple for their technology.
I personally Lending toward the iphone slowly. Who'd knows, I might be jumping the iphone ship when Iphone 4 white coming out next year. Getting bored of not enough supports from Nokia and apps right now. Nokia takes forever to addressing their issues and fix. So if you're looking to buy a phone that reliable and don't always crash on you or slowing down, then get an Iphone other wise if you a tethering sort of person but wanting something a bit challenging then get the Droid, and if you a nut case person who awefully wanting a piece of Nokia then get the N900 but you've got to do your research before buying it, because N900 is pretty much a dead end road at the moment. I got one and I'm in love with it since announced but after 5 months after i got it until now I'm disappointed and I don't want a device that cannot be upgraded in the future (official support). |
Re: Get the N900 or Wait?
dont bother buying

Re: Get the N900 or Wait?
I just got my N900 a week ago. For me the lack of applications and support is not really a terrible thing. I like Nokia because their hardware is good quality. The thing may be bulkier than a more modern smartphone but it has a real keyboard and a good screen that compensate for that. But really, the lack of apps and the quality of the apps that are there make me not recommend the N900 to anyone right now. Buy an Android or iPhone if you want a phone that you use for more than calling, browsing and sending the occasional email.
