Next phone after N900

My plan all along was to get Nokia's first MeeGo device. The problem is my commitment to Nokia is starting to wane and my eyes are staring to wander...Main reasons are that there have been barely any leaks for the "N9" mainly all being a videos on the MeeGo handset UI itsself. Seeing phones such as SE's X10, Samsung EPIC 4G(hoping a GSM version is released) and the Vibrant is making me impatient. What do you guys think will happen first? Nokia's MeeGo handset is announced/released, SE's X10 gets a Froyo update or a GSM version of Epic 4G is made? I really want some sort of confirmation from Nokia that their MeeGo handset will be AWESOME and include a slideout QWERTY keyboard. The last thing I want to do is get anything but Nokia for my next device. How are others handling this situation?

Re: Next phone after N900

N900 is pretty awesome if your current productivity software are already based on OSS stack or you need to deal with *nixes on daily basis. (fortunately?) for me, that's not in my job desc anymore.

I'm going 'back' to iPhone 4 + a BB. Currently waiting for Torch.

Re: Next phone after N900

As now, there is no phone that matches N900. There is a few phones that got some features that is better, like some Android got compass and Iphone 4 got higher resulution and so on. But no one beat N900 yet.

An Iphone 4 with FM-transmitter, Open OS, QWERTY like N900, 64gb on board memory + flashdrive and No Itunes would beat N900.

Re: Next phone after N900

Maemo is "dead", MeeGo isn't here yet, ignoring the Nokia N8. Overlooked the iPhone 4, went Samsung Galaxy S instead (and happy), still looking for a proper tablet.

Currently happy with N900, except for the lack of provisioning. I will wait for Meego. I do use iphone 3GS as a back up.......my work BB Bold is still in the drawer........

Re: Next phone after N900

Not sure about the brand or OS. Most likely it is something less than 100 g and half the thickness of my current N900 with a hard keyboard.

My next phone will be a HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy S, but the Galaxy S is a bit big size wise.

Right now there is no match for n900. Maybe if the n9 is much better than n900, them I will get that, but otherwise I am fine with n900.

Trust me on this one, BB Torch is a nightmare way too slow, the CPU is for 6xx Mgz and is not enough...

In my case i had in my hands Samsung epic 4G and was awesome so i gues Android... or iPhone 4 but only if they fix all the issues

IF sony's proposed playstation/android 3 phone is out i reckon thats the direction i'll be heading at the end of my contract, if its got a hardware keyboard of some description under the control pad then its a definate.

Re: Next phone after N900

I am considering Motorola Droid 2, very similar to N900 in terms of design but officially Flash 10.1 enabled device (It's what I was expected from N900) better device spec, and HW keyboard. But because i will stick to N900 for a while hope something more cool will show up on the market in 2011.

Definitely gonna go with the N8 this time. Android is still inferior to Symbian in terms of productivity, stability and multitasking and the more I see the N8, the more stable it seems. Almost everyone that has used a proto has been impressed. I'm going to miss the desktopesque experience of the N900 but something's gotta give. I do fear an inferior browser than the N900 which MIGHT be a deal breaker.

Android 3.0, WP7 and MeeGo are too far away. iOS isn't my cup of tea. Don't have a choice. :P

Probably getting the PSP Phone's successor (since I'm planning on keeping my N900 for at least two years).

Re: Next phone after N900

After my (admittedly short..) experience with Nokia and the N900, my next phone will most certainly not be Nokia, or based on any software that Nokia is backing.

Nokia certainly had a chance to make an impact in the smartphone market, but their marketing department must have fallen asleep. I would rather support the tremendous efforts of Google/Android than give Nokia another cent of my money and watch them squalor it away on ???

Re: Next phone after N900

I can't find anything that can do what the N900 can do right now. I discover new things to do on it everyday. I've been thinking of making the leap to android but their phones still dont have the hardware the N900 has. nitdroid and meego should hold me over with something new to try out until a new phone is announced with the hardware/software upgrade I want

Re: Next phone after N900

Until Nokia redeem themselves with fairly decent meego support on the n900 I'm considering a android or even an iphone 4 if I could find a bluetooth keyboard case for it and a decent stylus..

With any luck it'll be a 5" bezel-less WUXGA QWERTY that syncs with Outlook and Thunderbird/Lightning, edits .xls files, and downloads podcasts, inter alia.

Aavamobile only makes prototype devices for hardware development.

You lot are all dreaming if you think Nokia will produce something better than the N900 because for me the next mobile computer will be a MODIFIED N900 !!!.

This mobile has brilliant potential yet to be unleashed.... watch this space !!!.

Re: Next phone after N900

Hi all,

I have to say that I'm amazed to hear from users that they feel the n900 is a "perfect" device and there is no better alternative phone.

I'm all for respecting people opinions, however It really makes me wonder what these people are using their phone for and whether they really have taken the time to investigate other options out there.

I have a n900 and i love it, sadly i broke my screen a few days ago and am worried that it would take months to have it replaced (carphone warehouse quoted me anything between 14 days and 6 weeks!!)

I cant be without a phone for this long, so naturally i started to look for a possible replacement. I considered getting a new n900, however decided against it, as I dont think I'm prepared to invest another 500 uk pounds in a new n900 now that its clear nokia is not longer supporting the device. (if anyone can actually give me proof that pr 1.3 will be made available for the n900 i would love to see it.) Meego will be interesting, however i think its clear that its not for the n900 and therefore will probably be worse than maemo pr1.2,

I looked at a variety of android devices and I also looked at the dreaded iPhone 4. I have to say (reluctantly) I was very impressed with the competition especially the samsung galaxy s and the iphone 4. Some of the features integrated into these phone is very impressive and way beyond what the n900 is capably of doing.

Like i said before, I love my n900, however never in a million years would i say it comes close to being "perfect" phone.

Lets be honest here, its still full of bugs, its lacks many basic features, it has less than stellar battery power and probably most importantly, it is not longer being supported.

I'm not a power user, i'm not a programmer, i dont need get have root access to a phone, i just need a phone that will ideally allow me to travel without the need of my laptop, (i.e. access to emails, ability to open up ms office docs, type long emails if necessary etc....

Even from my basic list, i think the n900 is a very good contender and in some cases it is the best phone out there. However in many areas it is a bit of a disaster.

Email app is terrible, people say use claws, well ok, however claws its really not that much better. the buttons are tiny and its not very easy to use (especially without a stylus).

Basic functions like copying text from an email are not possible on the n900, rotation control is a joke when compared with both android and iphone. Everyone says the n900 web browser is the best, however the iphone 4's is also pretty good and does a lot better job at portrait viewing. In fact i'd go as far to say that the ip4's browser is as good as my n900's.

I'm the 1st to admit the n900 is a great phone and i probably only use its most basic features, however to call it perfect and the best device out there is surely a long shot.

My next phone (if i cant get my screen fixed) will be an ip4. I'm actually buying 2 of them, one for me and one to sell (where i live they are not available) in order to off set the cost of mine : )

Cheers,

Paddy

Loving n900, but nokia 1100 (the best cell phone in the world ever :) ) is the backup hehe in case something bad happens to n900 ..
