Cant get into flashing mode

Hey everyone!

Here's my problem.I enabled the extras dev repo and installed a linux power kernel+settings and some other stuff. After a while xorg started hitting 100% cpu usage,so i suspected that something from the extras dev repo was to blame.
I started uninstalling things and when i tried to uninstall the linux power kernel (from the separate uninstaller that it created)i got an error that the original nokia kernel could not be restored(..or something similar, cant remember the exact words). When i rebooted the device,it simply wouldnt boot.
Time to flash i thought.Well the problem is that i cant get it to flashing mode(dimmed screen with nokia logo and the usb logo on top right).I tried multiple times, pulled battery off etc,i can only get the dimmed nokia screen without the usb logo.
The flasher stays on "Suitable USB device not found, waiting."
Any ideas?
I tried on 2 computers with windows 7 x64 and got this when i plugged n900

http://i37.tinypic.com/i4qzxf.jpgwhere on earth can i get the Nokia USB ROM driver?Installed NSU,no luck.Installed/uninstalled pc suite,no luck there too.
There are ubuntu and archlinux boxes waiting in case someone thinks that the flash will work on linux and gives me some hints about it.

Re: Cant get into flashing mode

I've just reflashed with Ubuntu Live CD after a multitude of problems on Windows Xp - just do it! It works straight out of the box with Ubuntu and is very easy.

Windows 7 X64 doesn't really work. Windows XP is more reliable, you could use a virtual machine such as Sun Virtualbox to do it.

Re: Cant get into flashing mode

remove the battery
run the flash command and when it says "waiting" put the battery again with the usb previously plugged
it works for me

Installed a fresh copy of xp pro3 on vmware, just to flash n900,got the same "nokia usb rom"driver not found error:mad:
I have only installed NSU though,no idea if it matters.

under win 7 x64 try the Virtual PC mode with Win XP. In the XP-Mode plug in the USB connection from your phone to the PC. After the sound that came when you plug in a USB device you have to assign the USB-Connection from WIN 7 to the virtual Win-Xp Mode with the bar on top of the screen in Win-XP Mode.

Are you holding down the "U" key until the USB logo appears?

Yeap.till my finger starts to numb,no luck.
Is it reasonable to need more than say 8-9 minutes to work?

Re: Cant get into flashing mode

XP mode doesnt seem to work also, since the host computer cant"see"that n900 is connected to a usb

I was starting to think that i was the only unlucky one.
How did it happened to you?Maybe we can find a pattern..

Some feedback more:
Tried loooots of combinations.Xp mode on windows 7 x64,ubuntu 32bit live cd,ubuntu 64bit fresh install, fresh xp pro sp3 vm,archlinux with flasher installed from aur, with U button pressed for more than 10mins,without the U button pressed (..just in case),battery on/off,with pc suite, nsu installed, without them etc etc.Unfortunately nothing seems to work.
It just keeps on rebooting on the dimmed nokia screen without the usb logo.Sometimes when its not plugged in,it reboots with a bright nokia screen (like its going to boot normally)and then it keeps on rebooting for a couple of times untill it shuts down eventually.

I also (now i know stupidly) tried to unistall power kernel via app manager, got message to say to uninstall need to use a seperate program, thought ok,will do it later, then was going bed so turned off phone, plugged it in to charge and it kept looping round on the first nokia screen vibrating once (as when you turn phone on) showing bright white nokia screnn and then looping again... am currently trying ot follow this to see if it works: http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/...LP/td-p/672328

So uninstalling via the separate uninstaller is a no go.At least we ve learned something:o

Re: Cant get into flashing mode

This is not new. There have been hundreds of threads like this one.

The correct starting place is the Wiki, not some thread.

You will find that the line about suitable USB is expected and is probably a sign that you are on the right track.

Note that I said probably.

Can you point to some of them or the appropriate wiki page?

Re: Cant get into flashing mode

Some improvement here..
Today i got the phone to a nokia care center, they told me that they cant do anything and that they can sent it to nokia for repair.
Besides that, bought a new charger and returned home with the phone, for a final shot,
Left the phone to charge for about a hour. The phone kept on rebooting(bright nokia screen WITH the usb logo) while charging. While rebooting i got this screen a couple of times
http://i36.tinypic.com/vonc4n.jpg

Changed from charger to usb cable and the phone seems to be recognised by ubuntu.lsusb sees that the phone is connected.Flasher can also communicate with the phone since i can set it to r&d mode, but not being able to flash it till now.
Trying everything from scratch, hope flash is close..

@Luz
Charge the phone for more than an hour with the charger and try again, maybe this will help.

Re: Cant get into flashing mode

Final report,flashed and working great.
Pretty straight forward, ubuntu 32bit,U button, boot into flashing mode as it was supposed to,flasher able to see it and done, working like a charm.
Thanx to everyone posted ideas.

Re: Cant get into flashing mode

This has all the hallmarks of a detatched usb port but the end result was mind boggling, how on earth didnt you manage to get it recognised before that is either the pc's software incompatibility or as i said a detatched usb.

Glad you got it in the end but if your charging plays up in any way or form then suspect the obvious... anyhow happy days... for now .

Tried on multiple computers, with multiple OS,even vms as mentioned earlier.Has to be the charger thing or something. When Luz posts some feedback on it,maybe we can get a better picture.

I am back home after work now, have a vista 32 bit laptop from a friend as I only have win 7 or vista 64 on my PCs, will retry now and post the outcome.. thanks for help and updates...

Re: Cant get into flashing mode

Fixed it, flashed it in vista 32. I have external charger, so charged one of my bats whilst at work. one thing i have noticed and it may be relevant, my charger (nokia one with plug) seems to be faulty as every now and then when trying to charge led light flashes dull green and quicker than usual, however charges fine when usb cable is used....
