Welcome, what kind of app do you want?

festivalnut 2010-08-20 17:55

Re: will pay to have app made

perhaps if you gave us an idea what app you want made someone may feel generous enough to do it for free! or if its a substantial reward you're offering mentioning how much may help!

it wont be me btw - unless ur offering a small fortune for a crappy helloworld! :P

I want what he wants, and I will pay double!!

@dn247: do you care about the licenses the resulting app will carry?

aw i wouldt want someone to spend their time and not be paid.

i am a family man and want to back up my childrens nos to the n900 as you know with children they constantly change phones.

the app would maybe connect from my N900 and back up the name last name and the number.

thanks guys xx

Re: will pay to have app made

i would care about the licensing. i could market it to the family man looking to keep nos safe.

thanks

Connect to what? Your home computer?, an online service?

without wanting to steal food from out of hungry developers mouths... i'm sure this can probably be achieved with a few existing apps, and probably through easier means than what i'm gonna suggest...

simply bluetooth contacts from kids phone to n900 (slow first time, 1 no at a time) use mycontacts or similar program to "group" the kids contacts seperate from yours, or simply rename them with the kids first initial as the first letter of the contact. kids get a new phone jus BT em back over and rename again.

Re: will pay to have app made

you could just export them off their phones as a csv file and save that?
What type of phone do they have?

dn247 2010-08-20 18:21

Re: will pay to have app made

well i was looking to originally test it on my sons phone.

i was looking to :

connect usb cable from my phone to

blackberry
iphone
nokia
samsung
etc

then save them to a .csv file thats or to my phonebook.

hope thats clearer guys.

i do not wish to use bluetooth or any other method,
i do hope to make this available on the app store and such.

thanks guys pm me if interested i will escrow the money.

fnordianslip 2010-08-20 18:25

Re: will pay to have app made

USB won't work like that on the N900 (at least until some hacks it). There's no host mode support.

With the exception of the iPhone, most others have mcrosd cards. Couldn't you use the equivalent of sneaker net? (Take their card and pop it in your phone?)

I can also see a case for a Google docs spreadsheet that you all can keep updated. That has the benefit of helping out everyone else in the family if their phone dies...

hmm any other way without bluetooth?

thanks for the reponses

Re: will pay to have app made

How about if you just email the resulting list of numbers...

Emails, archaic they may be, are ubiquitous, simple and immortal...

dn247 2010-08-20 18:35

Re: will pay to have app made

well i was hoping to really have it saved in my contacts lists.

if we cant store it on my phone email would be good in spreadsheet if thats possible.

pm me your prices guys. i will escrow it once we decide how to do this i am so excited to do this app

quipper8 2010-08-20 18:38

Re: will pay to have app made

you can email vcf

most phones can send one

terryowen 2010-08-20 18:39

Re: will pay to have app made

Actually once I re-read the request, I'm wondering you had meant to pull data from another phone surreptitiously? As a parent of adult children, I might have been tempted when they were teens, so I'm not going to judge but it seems like a near impossible task without host mode, as mentioned above.

Beaming vcards should be possible with almost every phone but since there are many incompatible phone operating systems I'm guessing that there isn't a good way to do what you want.

Re: will pay to have app made

Essentially, the only realistic way to accomplish this is going to be via bluetooth sending the contacts as vcards from the devices in question, as this is really the only ubiquitous generic format of transferring contact information around.
Using a spreadsheet via email would be an option, but you're still left with needing a way to get the contacts into a spreadsheetable format in the first place, and that's basically going to need several apps, one for each possible phone platform to transfer contacts from, and will require said app be installed on the phones to export the contacts.
Essentially, any single app to receive contacts will essentially just want to receive them in vcard format via bluetooth and store them into itself - Basically, a replacement of the n900's own contact system that's dedicated to "backed up" sets of contacts.
How easy that is I do not know, but frankly instead of having a dedicated application to receive the vcards and store them separately, your best bet is likely to be as festivalnut suggested, and just use mycontacts to bundle each set of "backed up" contacts into a group of their own.

Cant they text you and then you have the option of adding to your contacts? A text message is what - 20 cents at the most?

I'm oddly fascinated by this - not quite sure why. :-)

Maybe you can use an existing service like this

that is blackberry and winmo only though

i dont like your parenting way mister!!!

you cant destroy your childs privacy(unless they are teens)

let him live free until hes like 15 until hes 18 years old

Re: will pay to have app made

some pro's and cons (just as i see it!)

usb phone to phone is out - no host mode and the custom cables required would be a killer.
usb to pc - possible, but not the simpleat or most elegant solution, plus kids lose their cable ten mins after opening the box.
bluetooth - OP doesn't want, so forget it anyway.
web server - possible, entirely software based, more elegant, though requires web server (duh) username, pass, etc. plus requires kids phones to have internet enabled (depends on your views as a parent on unrestricted web access) and also privacy issues
email - some privacy issues, should require manual download of contact file so not fully "polished"
text - could be made to work, fully integrated solution, however would require installation on BOTH phones.

Sorry, it's an old school term. Back before most computers were networked, to transfer data often required one to physically walk a disk from one to the other - hence the term "sneaker" (tennis shoes) net.

Connectivity is the norm anymore - can't remember the last time I used the term.

well i must thank you all for your swift replies and ideas. greatly appreciated.

i think ill have to settle for bluetooth.

even though i love this phone and think its absolutely brilliant. everyone around me has got a iphone with ther tons of apps but in relaity i only use two or three apps at the most.

best phone i had hands down

Please don't be rude! I'm the one who asked if that was possibly going on. The OP didn't imply this at all - I'm just a suspicious person.

sneakernet means transfering data to a physica. media like a memory card and walking with it to deliver to the target system, "sneakers" is a slang for shoes.

Again, please direct negative comments to me, since I'm the one who broached the possibility.

My apologies to dns247.

Web server sounds interesting - host a small database app that could be exported to contact info format.

I'm going to stir the hornet's nest a bit now... :-) Since this is a real Linux computer, what about configuring Wireshark somehow? I don't actually know how to use it but I'm aware that it can pull wireless info - both for licit and illicit purposes. (We use it in the labs at work on test hardware.)

Whether or not Wireshark could pull a number that someone was talking or texting to or other data, I don't know. I do know that a phone's OS _shouldn't_ let someone do that but it might be an interesting security test - to see how much data bleeds out into the open.

Hmmm... now I'm wondering just how much I'm exposing when I use wifi hot spots.

I didn't intend for my comments to make you a target, though.

As a mother who raised 4 daughters, I know that at least 2 of them would not have left their phones alone long enough for anyone to attach a cable to anyway.

I do think that parents have a right to monitor their minor child's activities - there are so many dangers in the world.

i dont think any phone would transmit over wifi data that was just required for cellular modem, without asserting some virus-type behaviour over the tarhet device. but i may be wrong! as for the webserver, if someon has one and is willing to provide the space, the perfect solution may be in sight... most phones have a backup all contacts option these days, albeit it in different formats sometimes, if the webserver could recode these different format into one used by the n900 then transfer to and fro is the only real issue left.

Would you even need an external web server? I thought there were a few in the repositories. And I know that desktop Firefox has an add-in to create an ad hoc server.

Then you could upload a csv file and have a script that converts it. With all the various options, it seems like there is likely existing scripts out there somewhere that could be reused.

I don't have enough contacts to make it worthwhile to do it for myself but if anyone puts together something I can help test it. I have old Nokia, WinMo and Android phones.

If you're gonna invade your children's privacy, do it in the open; if you think they're gonna hate you for forcing them to not have secrets with you, imagine how they will feel when they find out you went behind their backs and betrayed their trust.
