What are the geekiest/coolest show-off-apps we have?

For general porposes :D
I was wondering what you would find the geekiest or coolest apps wich you would show off to your friends ;)

What I could think of:

- Capsule 3d (3d viewing of demo files)
- Easy Debian (virtual PC!)
- Tweak Flash Plugin (flash 10 faker for flash 9 compatible movies etc.)
- ATI85 (texas instruments graphical calculator emulator)
- Transmission (torrent handler)

Not as if I want to compare my phone to my friends' but merely show what they have missed by buying something like HTC or iPhone4 :p Any ideas? Like augumented reality?

Flip through my desktops and then Show about 12-15 windows in multi-tasking. X-term with whoami. SSH daemon.

Nothing real flashy, though. On the N97, even the iPhone guys would ooh and ahh at the betalabs photo browser flicking through 400 pics or so.

did you compare the n97 to the n900??
really?
serious?
are you smoking something?
or maybe you drunk?
or maybe you are the 0,0001 percent who was happy with his n97?

Conversations app. Many different online accounts are integrated in one place. It provides a great convenience to reach people. I would love to have Google Earth and Google Navigation were in Maemo5 or in the coming MeeGo.

Re: What are the geekiest/coolest show-off-apps we have?

In terms of apps, there are hardly any I'm afraid. It's really sad.
All I can show off these days is some of N900's OS capabilities.

Such as:
- MicroB playing youtube videos in the background while multitasking.
- mplayer playing videos in the background while multitasking.
- xterminal (lol)
- old school midnight commander
- Ability to use queen beecon widget to make nearly any widget.
- Integration of many online accounts in contacts/conversations.
- Dual booting to NITDroid. But even HTC HD2 do this much better already.

There are far more cool stuff in Android/iPhone than N900 that's for sure.
But I still like the N900 due to hw keyboard, awesome multitasking capability.

N900 running Ubuntu, Nitdroid, Fedora, or its stock OS. Win win.

Agree ^^^ RDesktop.

install pykake and control dslr cameras with it. There is also other IR remote control apps like raemote you can control macs. Show fm-radio and transmitter.Tv-out with video and emulators. Show rdf functionality in freeoffice http://bit.ly/b6kM1X . Show battery drainer live desktops http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yUFankdUTc . Show pressure sensitive mypaint and how accurate resistive screen is, show also mypaint thread what people have drawn. Shoe easy debian and nitdroid.
This is pretty childish so show them your pecker.

Re: What are the geekiest/coolest show-off-apps we have?

Probably the first thing i found in the phone that really made me go "wow", (not very cultured regarding top alternative phones) was the native media player, continuing to play a movie where i left before. And being able to play almost any movie format didnt exactly lowered that impression.

About friends, probably would depend on which one.

For the ones that play with cameras, fcam&hdrcamera would certainly impress them, specially with an introduction of what is hidden behind.

Running Android, Palm OS (with Garnet VM), and some the gaming machines emulators will work for others.

Doing the linux standard stuff, running top, ssh, mc, firefox, and how the desktop shows/interacts with multitasking will be interesting for the remaining ones.

And of course, doing all of this with max screen brightness, and then showing them batterygraph will certainly impress all of them. With big power comes big respon^H^H^H^H^H power comsumption.

I love these threads because I always find some apps I missed!

As for the topic, I think google talk video, voice, and text chat is pretty cool. And you get to demonstrate how integrated all the communications are.

lowlight and hdrcapture are quite impressive and you can show the results as well. fcam is not so.. impressive, but it's good to mention raw capture...?

Numpty Physics

It's nice to show off why you want a resistive screen instead of capacitive.

Nice find. I haven't seen it before. After quick google, I found that it is in extras-testing: http://maemo.org/packages/view/qtmobile-weather . I think I will try it.

Re: What are the geekiest/coolest show-off-apps we have?

My favourite app is called IWishICould

While it is not available in any repository, I use it very often. I will elaborate the features of the apps with some real world examples, where I have used it
  • Travelling on the train or the tube in London, the internet connection is quite dodgy and I quite like to read multiple news sites. So I wish I could load multiple webpages in the background, so that I can read them even after I lose my connection.
  • I was out in Spain and wanted to call home. But I didn't want to pay the ripoff roaming charges. So I wish I could call using skype (it is too expensive for some countries) or use one of the many sip operators, most of whom tend to specialise and hence have really good deals for most countries
  • Using a public wifi, I wish I could secure it in some way. Then I remembered that I could simply create an ssh tunnel to my home router
  • During the world cup, I had to go to China and my hotel wasn't showing the matches live. So I wish I had a device which would allow me to wach live stream online. Oh, I did.
  • Has happened to me on multiple occassions that I have gone somewhere and wished that I could access my home PC to retrieve a document or a file. Now I can
These are just some of the scenarios. Basically, you have some scenarios with all phones where you wished you could do something but were hampered by the capability of the phone. With N900, I have always managed to find workarounds to my IWishICoulds

Re: What are the geekiest/coolest show-off-apps we have?

Playing mp3s through my car stereo (using FM Transmitter) WHILE using Sygic navigation at the same time (pure multitasking)! The media player pauses the song every time the navigator speaks, and the navigator's voice is heard through the car stereo!
(However I still wish I had a free nav app!)

Also, viewing streaming tv over wifi is pretty cool.
