iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
This is simply amazing! Take a look:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3NwYj-zgJk I can't help but get excited when I see things like this running on a mobile device. First the Rage demo and now a wonderful showcase of the Unreal engine, with fantastic graphics on the iPhone 4. While not at the level of current consoles, these visuals are easily at the level of last-gen consoles! Considering the Unreal Tegra demos, I suspect that this engine (in some incarnation) will likely make its way to android as well in the future -- though this is purely speculation. What do you think? |
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
same vga as n900
atleast the same series and the same process *frequency unknown* the only difference is the ram and if im correct, this had a good chance of being introduced to n900 as well |

Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
The graphics are nice, but controlling via touch screen = fail.

Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
I bet if it were on Symbian/Maemo/Meego, you guys would be boing bananas.
I'm not an iOS owner, but I can appreciate how far performance has come on handheld devices. |
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
I just tried the citadel demo today on my iphone4. The detail and sharpness is quite insane.
Ps: this is coming from a gamer with ati5870 gpu. Multitouch 'analog' dpads still work better than hardware keys on fps for me. I'd rather move my fingers slowly to get the right speed than (ratata)taps to simulate slow movement/turns. |
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
This works on 3GS to0 and the gpu is a SGX 535 underclocked to 7m/poly
So Hardware wise it should run on the n900 :) |
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
Indeed, practically all modern hardware is capable of running this demo. Some faster, some slower.

Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
I just tried loading the demo on my girlfriends iPod touch. Unfortunately, itunes was giving me an ultimatum: delete everything on the device or forgo the installation.
... now they have my credit card info! I hope I can delete my account! Is it possible to load apps on the device itself? Without the need for iTunes? |

Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
@capn: sure, just launch appstore from her ipod touch and search for citadel. It's a free download (82mb), you won't need a credit card for this.
@cfh11: it's certainly different; but it's much less painful than going from mouse+keyboard to a console gamepad (even with dual analog sticks). For one, your finger movements on the screen approximates the type of freedon (angle and speed precision) better and easier than trying to manipulate analog sticks on a gamepad (don't even talk about non analog hardware keys). Anyway, imho, part of the allure and enjoyment of new games (and apps) is to learn and experience their new mechanicsn(ui, ux, content, etc). I wouldn't knock something new without trying it out. |
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
wow really pretty.
i would love too see this on my n900. but tech demo didn't says something. we remember our great bounce tech demo? looked great and that was all:( |

Personally I think for portable gaming the Nintendo DS or PSP route is the way to go but that's my opinion. |
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
Some of the graphics on the iphone look like PS3 on the iphone 4 e.g streetfighter iv.
The citadel demo is nice but at roughly 100 mb for a demo its pretty huge. Also moving around by clicking ahead on the screen is annoying. Would prefer a mouse. Very nice graphics though. |
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
I actually think that the screen has a better capability for precision control for FPS compared to a mouse (if you can drag anywhere on the screen). Yes, I play with a keyboard and mouse combo exclusively....
The benefit of the directional control is that it's analog, unlike the keyboard and touchscreen surface offers fine precision control similar to a mouse. But as they are just your fingers, you have far greater dexterity. The downside is that your hand potentially occludes your vision, but I suspect good players will adapt accordingly. It would take much getting used to, but so did the keyboard/mouse combo when it began to catch on. I can see playing like this on a flat surface (ie. not holding the device). |
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
I remember playing the original Unreal when that first came out for the 3Dfx cards and thinking how sweet the scenery looked.
But one thing is going through my mind at the moment. It may look sweet and play like a dream in it's current form, but that's only a small area of the game world and it hasn't been populated with enemy NPCs as yet. Once things get busy you can pretty much expect a performance hit. Would be interesting to see how it fares up as a finished game though. |
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
Something tells me that mobile performance is only going to get better. ;)

Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
The best thing about this, is it raises the bar for everybody else. :)

Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
I got this last night... didn't go to sleep until 7am because it seriously blew my mind.
Not because it's the best graphics I've ever seen nor do I find it totally incredible; mainly because the iPhone basically one-upped even my Sony PSP in terms of graphics. That's how far these little handheld wonders have gotten. I'm impressed and ultimately know we'll probably never see anything of this quality or level on the Nokia offerings. People are too busy (can't blame them honestly, I just finished a ton of ScummVM games last month) enjoying stuff like FreeCiv and games from 15+ years ago. It's not a bad thing, retro gaming that is. I'd love to see stuff like this. |

Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
It's still possible, but Nokia needs to make some smarter moves in this new Arena.
I wish I could try it. I'll wait until my GF gets home, and then I'll log into her iTunes and 'sync' it. |

Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
@cap'n: seriously? Any iOS above v1.x should have an app called 'App Store' in it. Although you'd probably need iOS 4.x to run the citadel demo. Just swipe to leftmost screen (spotlight) and seach for App...
If you can't find it, perhaps your girl is a hardcore gadget freak (albeit the iFreak kind) that messed up her iTouch and i think you should take the time to appreciate how lucky you are to have been able to find such soul mate. @Laughing Man: yes, but bottom left/right are usually not reserved for the main attraction ;) i'm not saying it's perfect without compromise, but the tradeoff is surprisingly less than i expected (from my initial "WTF THUMBS ON SCREEN?!" moment). |

Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
ya i saw that a while ago. Pretty impressive, unfortunately this will never happen on the Maemo. Almost certainly anyway.
To those that say touch screen gaming sucks on the iPhone, ur wrong. The majority of games i played on my iPod Touch works fine and to my surprise, the controls work really well. A really good RPG game for u RPG gamers out there is Chaos Rings. Don't judge or look at the gameplay, PLAY IT URSELF first and see how good of a control it has. It's a pretty damn decent game. Gaming on the iDevices are actually a lot of fun, considering the game contents and quality as well as the amount they have in the App Store, compared to our shitty collections on the Maemo front. It's actually a lot better. My point is, at least developers are developing for the iPhone, while i wish that's the same case for Maemo, it probably will never happen. Let's hope Meego picks up some attention at least, coz i have a feeling it'll just be the same. Quote:

I suspect a wipe, an upgrade, and some encouraging words is good for what ails this magnificent device. |
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
@capn: sometimes apps can get hidden or get the wrong permission set, but spotlight should still be able to find them. Try out a search for 'app' on it.
If that doesn't work, you can try turning on apps restriction/parental lock, exiting settings app, going back in to disable it again. This can reset permission/file flags. |
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
Great suggestions! I'm trying this now.
|
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
iPhone gaming is the best on mobile and maemo/meego will never get games like rage and this epic game simple !
|
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
Sadly after searching for spotlight search (ironic...) I didn't find anything. I've been over every pixel of this device, in every menu available, and it seems that I'm thoroughly locked out. I wasn't able to find spotlight search in the menu, nor the settings. Ditto for apps restriction or parental lock.
I appreciate your help, but at this point it feels like I'm wasting your time... And that dear sir, I will not abide. I figure a wipe for this device is overdue. It's odd to feel so helpless. Usually this is about the time when I begin my command line trek. ;) |
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
@capn: lol take it easy dude. You can access Spotlight by swiping left on page 1 of the homescreen.
What is indexed by spotlight can be controlled in the settings menu (I believe in Settings - General - Spotlight, or thereabout. Gotta make sure that apps are indexed to make it show up. And note that App Store (app) is not spelled AppStore ;) |

Maybe this isn't a gen2 iPod touch.... It seems awfully gen2, though... EDIT: I just looked up the model number and it's a gen1 iPod touch! I don't know if that makes a difference, but that may explain some of these shenanigans. Considering when my GF got her macbook, the 'free' iPod should have been gen2. Alas, she must have bought it on the wrong cusp. |
Re: iPhone 4 Epic Unreal Engine
to be honest, i dont see any sense in playing with a mobile device anyway! i had a nintendo ds lite, a psp and selled both!
i like gaming, but gaming on with shitty sound, and such a small display is nothing for me! at home i have a 52" inch SHARP FULL HD and a 7.1 onkyo hdmi receiver with KEF surround set....playing games like gears or halo reach today is MUCH more fun and MUCH more entertaining, than on a mono-like 3" inch mini display xD there is no atmosphere and what about controls? nothing is better than a real controller.. and what about multiplayer with FRIENDS? nothing is better than mario kart, street fighter, or gears/halo :D i just play games like brain training, spb brain evolution or brain party, just a few games, where i can train my brain and just play short games, come on guys, SERIOUS GAMING and real FUN gaming must stay at home, with a decent HD-TV, SURROUND SYSTEM and internet connection! so i dont miss anything =) |
