Important: Ovi Files Service Notice

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Please make sure to uninstall the Ovi Files Connector installed on your personal computer. To do this, execute the standard Windows or Macintosh uninstall procedure that came with your computer. You will not lose any files as a result of this service discontinuation. Ovi Files simply creates an 'online mirror' of the files saved on your Windows PC or Mac, so your original files will remain intact. The files on your computer are always treated as the master version, even if some are selected as 'Anytime Files.'

You will still be able to share content between your phone and PC using another Nokia product, Nokia Ovi Suite. With Nokia Ovi Suite installed on your PC, you can do the following: sync your contacts and messages; transfer videos, photos, and music; back up your Nokia and update your device software. Please note that this is not a direct substitute for Ovi Files as Nokia Ovi Suite requires a wired connection between your PC and mobile device. For more information visit www.ovi.com/suite.

Again, we are sorry for the inconvenience and hope that you will continue to enjoy our most popular services:

This just hit my inbox for whatever it's worth. :)

Thanks for your response... I'll stop posting now because it isn't relevent to YOU.

it isnt relevant to the whole community
move it to off-topic
n7xx and n8x0 dont have cellular support so this is not relevant
n900 doesnt support this either
so ultimately, one way or another, its off topic

OR,
Because you can't imagine anyone here using OVI files as cloud storage with any device or happen to know how many have linked to these files to provide support to their posts... STFU!

***

It has always been known that OVI would have to undergo significant changes in order to support the N900 and all future Nokia devices. This was also posted here because of the possible relevance the timing of this announcement has on those changes...

BTW, I can no more move a thread after it has been posted than you can.

so yea
relevance = nil :eek:

If this bothered you so much you could have PM'ed me and I would have simply deleted the thread (if I had agreed with you).

Oh wait, I can't do that now because someone posted a reply.

I've always had the impression that the whole Ovi thing in all its branches was a toy for some bombastic VP without any professionality. Here is some support to my belief. You can't simply say - OK we close - if you want to convince people to use your services now or in the future.

These failed attempts at diversification (ovi/n-gage) are a distraction, Nokia should go back to concentrating on making (good) phones.

WT...?

Dude, I posted something I believed to be informative to my fellow members and that had some relevance to any owner of a N900 who has been waiting patiently for movement by Nokia with regard to OVI. Any movement...

The purpose of your posts, as far as I can tell, are to inform us of your superior ability to parse new information and categorize it correctly. Good for you.

I'm impressed. In fact I nominate you for a Junior Moderator position.

I could care less if or where it is moved but I did try to post it in the correct forum. I guess I'm not as bright as you. :o

BTW: The first thing you can do as a moderator, junior grade is to hit that little link that reads "report post" in the top right corner of any post you wish moved. Okey doke?

After you do that, a message box will appear and you can type in anything your heart desires and spare everyone else the melodrama.

It's funny you mention VP's... When the N900 first came out, many customers were led to believe that full OVI integration was on the N900's road map.

In order to communicate the sense of urgency new owners had with regard to this, I suggested then that all Nokia VP's be issued N900's as their primary phones. The CEO should notify them all of a change of location for their next review meeting via email to the device.

The email would contain the new address and that they should use OVI Maps and services on their N900's in order to navigate to this new address.

...I wonder how that would have turned out. :D

Re: Important: Ovi Files Service Notice

Ovi Files may not have been natively supported on the N900, but it definitely was accessible through the web interface.

I know because I used it.

It was a primitive service, and probably not the safest in the world, but it was a simple way to access the files on my PC without getting into ssh and tunneling.

Shame they stopped it instead of making it better.

All you turds who jumped on the OP for this post should have just not read it or not responded if it didn't apply to you.

In case you can't read, his post ended with "This just hit my inbox for whatever it's worth."

That should have been a sure sign to you Rtards that he was just posting information that he thought would be of interest to people in the community.

God this forum has gone downhill because of idiots like you ppl.

Agreed. Too many cursory dismissals of anything that isn't directly related to a single party. Bullsh*t responses from people who don't consider anyone else other than their precious selves.

OP - Thanks for posting this up, though it isn't relevant to me there may well be other parties who it is relevant for. Nice one fella :D

This is the reason I did not sign-up to any of Nokia's services.

I knew this would happen. Nokia are a phone company not a services company.

If they want to grow beyond "just a phone" company they need a management team with a long-term strategy and solid commitment to decisions they have made.

Current management = Epic Fail.

My goldfish has a longer attention span than Nokia!

Re: Important: Ovi Files Service Notice

I have always been of he oppinion that the N900 software would have looked a lot different if important Nokia staff had been required to live with it for say a month - with no right to use any other phone at least during office hours.

It's critical that decision makers and designers gets that kind of feedback, to force them to make more qualified decisions.

Sorry for an OT post, but this thread seems to be focused on OT or not OT ;)

Attacked?

Lets recap for those playing along at home, shall we?

***

Um, I posted to open this thread and you replied with a negative remark about relevance... adding nothing more.

I then replied that I would STFU if what you say is so.

Apparently not happy with this solution you continued to hijack the thread, steering it instead toward even more negativity.

I then offered another solution to this dilemma that seemed to confront only you.

***

Now that other members have replied that they believe the thread was informative and relevant you wish to change the narrative to reflect that somehow I attacked you.

This is what we have affectionately called the "Sheldon Cooper syndrome*" around here.
(*Not to be confused with the Whistling-face syndrome)

Personally I think that this kind of passive aggressive negativity sucks enthusiasm out of members and casual viewers alike. A variation of this "Sheldon Cooper Syndrome" may have been the antecedent that has prompted contributing members (like the one noted in my signature) to leave this place. :(
This is not a good thing but alas, I am now OT and perhaps this subject can be explored in another thread.

...in any event I am putting on my "Whatever Dude" hat and moving on.

I hope this thread remains as a marker for when Nokia began finally making the visible changes in OVI that some believe have been needed for quite some time.

**Examples of the talk.maemo.org SheldonCooper syndrome can be found >> HERE <<

Regular TMO member: We think we can help you with your problem.
Sheldon: Oh, I doubt that. I haven't figured out a way, and I'm much smarter than all of you.
Regular TMO member: Yes, buy you're not smaller than all of us put together.
Sheldon: I'm sorry, that is what I meant.

Yes I did. It opens a website which suggests to use desktop to download Ovi Files program if you have the program you skip that screen and type your credentials to log in. N900 supports this service as much as any other Nokia phone. However, as I said earlier that service doesn't work well, its hard to use it but possible. Right now I'm removing my files from there :) I dont like cloud based services at all

and yes Nokia services are horrible , I was more frustrated by Ovi mail than this service. It never worked well with N900 :( I think Nokia will discontinue it sooner or later

I too received this e-mail (in the middle of the night). And then this morning, I received the update notice below (on a Mac running Snow Leopard). WTF? Talk about one hand not talking to the other! I half expect a monkey to fall out of my phone the next time I open up the back. What a bunch of clowns.

I used it a couple of times to connect to a Windows PC. Sad to see it go though. I guess the costs were too high.

True that^

The optimist in me is hoping this is in preparation of a "do over". :)

I did sign a non-disclosure for the OVI beta and I hope what I am about to say isn't in violation but at this point, meh.

When I first entered the OVI beta site I was presented with the exact same caveat regarding N900's that was posted for N900 users of the original OVI.

What steamed my clams though was that there wasn't a framework for the N900. There wasn't even a road map outlining what to expect for our efforts. Only that, "Nokia and the OVI team were looking forward to your contribution". (I would insert a "wanker" icon here if this wasn't a family place. :p)

Needless to say I didn't participate much so I was surprised to get an invite to download the next beta release. Guess what I was greeted with then? The same dang disclaimer.

Not a dang thing regarding the N900 was in the change log from what I saw. (The wanker icon switches hands without missing a stroke. :D).

Who knows what any of this means?
And I doubt if even Nokia does.

Re: Important: Ovi Files Service Notice

I for one am devastated to see Ovi Files go away!!!! I have 5.8GBs of data stored there since the N82 days. People who never used it don't understand. With Ovi Files it was a free and simple way to get virtual access to your computer via any web browser and internet connection. It was simple, just browse your files on your phone/other pc just like you are on your host computer as long as the host PC is connected to the web.

ALSO, there was an Anytime Files feature that allowed you to upload your files to the cloud so that even if the host PC was not online, you could access your files. I used to download documents, pictures and software to my N82 no matter if I was thousands of miles away from my desktop.

Free, Fast, Simple and Everywhere. For people to say it is not relevant and then give the OP a hard time about it or that no one cares goes to show that some of you didn't own a Nokia before the N900 while others don't know much about Ovi other than Ovi Store......

As long as they don't take away Share on Ovi......

Thank you OP for posting the information.
