HD Video Playback (it's not just another hd post)

Hello everyone here !!! how are you ?

so today i found something really interesting, i don't remember if it has already been said but i know it's been asked many times...
the n900 has the hardware capabilities to play 720p videos but there is no software developped to use the power of the chip to enable it on MAEMO 5 ! (you can try, it will be sooooooo laggy !)
but that's not what i wanted to say,
what i want to say is that i managed to play a 720p smoothly on it this morning !
i know you are going to say fake, omg and i don't know what... lol but seriously i managed !

someone told me that RockPlayer can play HD files (yeah mplayer too i know), but the thing is that i played a 720p video on NITDroid ;)

so yes it's possible, but with NITDroid... (i don't know, i repeat, if it's already been told althought i searched on the forum)

for those asking, it was a 10s lenght video recorded this morning with a sony ericsson vivaz (i think lol) but hell yeah, a hd 720p video !!!
so send it to my n900, launched rockplayer (the one that can be found on nitdroid's forum) and played it right away =P

One thing to say : NITDroid on n900 roooocks ;)

will post a video of that later ;)

the screen is so small i doubt you'll even notice a difference from the same clip encoded to the native res of the n900? at least it wont be cropped. so you didnt really watch a 720 video. as it CANT be done on the n900 as the screen size 800x480 against 1280x720. so really you watched a cropped 720p vid. good work?

the n900 display isnt hd so you will never ever see hd videos on it.
even if you overclock to 5 ghz.
second i have played blu ray rips on my n900 some weeks ago(avatar, black hawk down)
its nothing new.
and the other thing is that it wasn't hd playback discussed because there is nothing to discuss.
we have all talked about hd recording..........

I think he meant because the blue people would be so tiny on the screen. But if we're criticizing Avatar, comparing it to, say, pocahontas, would be far more clever then just comparing it to smurfs. And even then there's enough difference that better insults would be appropriate.

That said, I personally enjoyed the movie. I don't think it was a great work of art or whatever, but it was enjoyable enough to get into.

I bet that you would not see any difference on n900 screen on properly encoded movie that has resolution of 640x384 compared to 800x480 encoded movie.

Also having HW to play 1280x720 movies makes no sense on that screen resolution. Movie had to be resized to fit the screen. Waste of resources.

That's true but i dont want to spend ages encoding movies for my phone before a long drive, id much rather just copy any size vid on and go and watch it. Thats better than encoding to right size and format and the copy and go and watch it..

exactly and we n900 users have the monster device and can drag and drop every bunch of **** and our player plays it:)

Spend ages? Do you know how long it took to encode dvd to xvid three years ago (for me that is just moment ago).

I bet that you can encode movie pretty fast desktop machine today. Put 10 movie on batch and hit encode and everything is ready by morning,

But itīs true that it would be happyjoyandjeyj, but if you have some idea how much hw power encoding HD stuff takes then you would realize that putting that powerful cpu or dedicated GPU (which accepts only certain standardized h.264 encoded stuff) on this piece of toy I bet that prize would hit the sky pretty fast.

You can demand what ever you want but first people really have to think what is realistically feasible in mass production on prize that some people are ready to pay. Of course you can make niche device that has everything and costs pretty penny but then again only small amount of customers would spend big cash on it.
