Hello everyone!As the title says I would like to start this thread in order to discuss some things about some specific processors!

Ok!Let's assume that you want to buy a new PC and you have the ability to buy the best and the most expensive parts for your new computer.Well,you buy all the parts and the only part that remains to buy is the cpu.As I said before you can afford expensive parts and because of that you are start thinking to buy Intel's Core i7-980X Extreme Edition 'Gulftown'.

My question is now:even if you have the ability to buy this processor is it worth the money?What I mean is that yeah it has great specs,but for somebody who is an exteme gamer is it worth to buy this processor or it's waste of money even if he can afford this kind of buy?

Question number 2):What if somebody is an extreme gamer and also wants to edit video,render video(and other things like that)and use programs which demand a lot of processing power?Is it worth it?

Question 3):If you look this thing a little bit in the future will it worth?What I mean with that?I mean that after 2 or 3 years will somebody who bought this processor and gave 1000$ say that:"Damn now I have to buy a new processor"?Of course technology changes with the speed of light,but I thing it's a crappy thing to give 1000$ and and after a relatively short time start thinking that it was a stupid thing giving so much for something that lasts so little.(if you want to understand what I mean think what probably people say today who gave money for the intel core 2 quad extreme.)

Question number 4):If you have to choose between Intel i7 950 and Intel i7 975 and intel i7 980X and AMD Phenom 2 X6 T1090 Black Edition which will you choose and why for the kind use that I already said in the question number 2.

Please if you want to answer the question be as much objective as you can and with that I refer to the fan boys.Don't take that as an insult I am just trying to export some oblective results and that is all!

The benefits of the i7-980X are limited. Anyone who could truly use (and afford) the i7-980X would probably get more out of two Xeon 5500 series chips. Most everyone else is just wasting money on excess cores and power consumption.

Waste of money. A gamer would do better to spend time, money, and effort on their graphics, storage, power, and put some effort into setting up a system that operates quietly.

Possibly, but you'd get way more out of a dual CPU system with more physical cores.

Unlikely. I'm over a year into my i7-920 and I haven't come near to needing an upgrade. No biggie, since by the time I replace it Intel will have already made Socket 1366 obsolete.

The Extreme Edition processors seem to be more for those with too much money and not enough sense. Cut down a couple editions on your processor, overclock a bit, take care of the real slow spots and you'll get more bang for your buck. I run my i7-920 at 3.0GHz and it took zero effort.

The Phenom is half the price of the i7-950 and gets you most of the performance in video processing. I'd look at some comparative benchmarks and see what fits for you.

But definitely, the 980X is not worth the money by any stretch of the imagination. Easily, $600 or more that could be spent on an SSD that would really boost performance.

I like to buy just behind the bleeding edge!

You can get close to the same performance for a fraction of the cost. The bleeding edge gives you bragging rights.......for a few months.:o

What do you mean limited?I thought that Xeon processors are for servers.And even if they aren't,the cost of one Xeon 55xx is over 1100 $.And even if they aren't,the motherboards that you have to use for an Intel Xeon 55xx are for a specific use,that gives a lot of processing power but not for the use of games or video edtiting.If I am not wrong they don't even support SLI or Crossfire.This is what I am thinking,if I am wrong correct me.

This is why I said to assume that you have the ability to waste any amount of money to other components.I mean that you can afford buying the best graphics card,maybe ssds with a lot of storage and a good cpu cooler to operate the system quietly and the only thing that remains to buy is a cpu and you are thinking to buy a intel 980x.Would you buy it for the type of use that I write in question 2 or not?If not why?

I said it also previously motherboards for that kind of systems don't allow you to use more that 1 graphics card.Their purpose are for servers.And like I said before if I am wrong correct me!
When you say more physical cores?I think xeon cpus and 980x have the most physical cores(6 native cores by the way).I don't that you could find in market cpu for pc with more than 6 native cores.

When you say " take care of the real slow spots " what do you mean exactly?For exaple change a hdd with an ssd,and choose ram with better timings and more speed and other things like that?Or I misunderstood?

Man I am so sorry but I don't have a clue of what you are trying say to me.Could you please restate your opinion with other words?My english are not very good.

Let's forget sytems with dual cpus and try to answer that question:if you can afford to buy an expensive cpu for a single cpu system for the purpose of extreme hardcore gaming,video rendering and the use of programs that demand a lot of processing power what would you possibly buy if you don't have in your mind to overclock.I know that also a good vga card in needed too,but let's focus a little bit only in the cpu part.

What do you really want? Every argument given against the mentioned CPU gets crossed out by you. So what's left in the end? Like Grok said: the bleeding edge for a few months. As soon as the successor comes out or an alternate processor with similar specs your money goes to hell and you are left with a 'simple' high power CPU.
If you have the money and want to spend it for this piece of silicon, do it. If not, grab some crisps and watch the value going down.

No it's not crossed out.And as the title says it's a discusion.Which this actually means in case you don't know that you disagree with somebody or agree.Also,I already wrote what I want.So calm down a little bit,because nobody made you to answer my question.All I want is your help.Either you give it or not I am fine with it.

By Bleeding edge I mean.. "the top of the line" or "best/most expensive" that sort of thing.

You move down the specification level a bit and you see good peformance at a more affordable price. Also these slightly lower spec versions may have been top-of-the-line a few months earlier anyway.

Finally, a careful system build and software installs, finished off with overall optimization and perhaps a cautious overclock can put that system at a very similar performance level.

It all depends on your budget and comfort level.:)

What is of most importance to you? Video rendering or playing games? If video rendering, then get a system designed for it. If games, get a system designed for it. Wasting money just because you can is silly.

1. Xeon processors are for servers and high workload workstations. You can get them for a wide range of prices, many for well below $1000.
2. If you're mostly going to be gaming, there is zero benefit in a six-core processor.

I take a dim view of wasting money.

Because eventually you cross the point of diminishing returns and end up spending $600 more on a processor that you don't get a whole lot more out of.

Only the highest-end Xeon and Core i7 CPUs have 6 cores. If you were to go for multiple physical CPUs, you could get more cores which will help far more for processing video.

Buying an extreme edition is basically an e-peen thing. If you're processing so much video that the two cores help, you're probably better off getting a system designed for it. Otherwise, you can save money and spend it on disks and more RAM, overclock the CPU, and end up with an overall snappier system.

So there is not something that covers both things.

Gaming:Intel i7 950 and i7 975

What else could you suggest for each category different?

ok!Here is my actual problem.I want to buy a new pc.Actually I want to buy all the parts of a computer except for the graphics cards which I am going to buy a few days later.The problem is that I want to play games on ultra high(you know extreme gaming:D:D),but unfortunately in a few months they are going to give me for my university some very demanding programs for the cpu and I have to make some exercises on them(I don't know yet the names of the programs).This is why the hole cpu discussion.So if you don't mind show me in which direction tο move.It's my first time in my a life that I have the chance to say that I am going to buy a very good computer for myself.And the bad thing in the hole story is that in my country computer parts are way more expensive than it is in other countries and I don't know why.

This is why I am making this huge discussion.I was trying to find very good parts because as I said before it's the first time I can do this.I also searched for online shops in order to find cheaper prices.I found one(ncix.com),but unfortunately they don't ship international.So if you know any store please tell.

I know that the whole story is pathetic and I am trully sorry for making you frustrated,I hope you undersatand the reason why.

Ok, I see where the graphics cards come in. You won't max out any Core i7 CPU however.

I am assuming that these are for a class, in which case you'll probably do fine with an i7 950 or the Phenom II X6 even. If this were for professional reasons I'd say go for the Xeons, but you don't need to go that far overboard.

What on earth are you apologizing for?

I am apologizing because I was talking to you for cpu and my actual problem is the hole computer.

Now for the programs.The programs are for the students.The professor will give us exersices on them and we are going to do them for homework on our computers.But unfortunately they told us that they are demanding.Actually they told us if somebody hasn't got a good computer,he can also use the computers of the university.The problem is now that the university has a small number of computers compared to the number of students.
If you were asking me,I was ready to buy a computer for games.

Well ok,I will think about the processors you told me.
Do you any online store that have good prices and ship international?

Allright, you are in the beginning of a study. I really can't believe the mentioned programs are that demanding. Usually the teachers are talking about not-so-old computers and not about the bleeding edge of current technology. I mean, they don't force students to buy a computer for some thousand dollars. A quite recent one should be enough for doing some homeworks. Or are you going to edit some 3D-Animation video in realtime?

I can't believe it either.But I think it's worth the money because they have to do with research and you can learn many things.Actually they told us to use the computers that the university has,but they are not enough for all students.

I saw a friend of mine doing 3D-Animation in his computer and I like it quite much.But as I realized you can't have a computer which can do both gaming and 3d-animation,unless if you give a lot of money which I am not willing to do.

But ok what to say.This is one of the difficulties of living in real life:D:D.

If you get enough joy out of the tought of just "having it", and got the money, then it's not wasted.
But for "what it can do", I'd never pay the price myself.

I have an idea! Why not tell us the applications you expect to run!

As for online suppliers who will ship to you? I would say you need to research that yourself. There are many good sellers and there are plenty of online feedback sites. Depending on where you live, import restrictions may vary (as well as exporting to your country). You also could talk to people with High performance computers in your school and find out where they got them.

I don't know the names of the programs for my year yet,because this idea doing exercises on some specific lessons using computer programs related with chemical engineering introduced last year and all the last year students did their exercises on the computer which provides the university.But they told me than even the last hour they were doing exercises because they didn't have enough computers for all of them and the time was ending and there were students who weren't ready yet and they were doing it literally in the last hour before the deadline ends.I wish I could knew them.The only thing that I know is that they are for chemical engineering.

Now for the online shop:I found the tigerdirect.com.I hope you will tell me if it is good or not.:confused:

I will ask my professor from which company did the university took the computers.

I asked my professor about the pc and he told me that they bought them from Dell.But he also told me that the basic processing work for the program is done by a server computer(I saw the computer it was like a closet!:D)which communicates with the others.Now the weird thing is that they use parallel programming in order the other computers give to the server their processing power.:eek::eek:

So I guess I have to buy a closet-computer and some normal pcs!:D:D
