Pidgin drains more afaik
If you're using MSN check out pecan.
It should consume the least battery.

yes, i am using pecan.. is there a program in python or something.. that if im connected to 3g network it automatically changes to wifi and if there is no wifi it connects back to 3g ??

cuz the baked switch program doesnt work for me

wait a second. You asked about programs to use services but don't mention the services at all...
E:what search interval you have in settings?

Just make a test with powertop having either one enabled and then compare. Its easy.

does leaving your settings to connect automatically to any known wifi and 3g not work? perhaps you've left it connecting to any wifi and get html secure password access points taking priority over 3g connection and not giving you access?
i vaguely remember seeing a script someone wrote on here that would be used for connecting to public wifi's, but would ping an ip to test the connection, therefore not wasting time being connected to hotspots which require a password after connecting, perhaps this script could be modified to suit your settings?

i am using msn pecan IM .. the baked one on the n900 and last week ive downloaded pigdin internet app.. and the drain off battery irritated me.. i tried everything.. OC, Swappiness, the brightness off my screen.. and i also have disabled the update interval off my email and weather for example..

i was just curious ;) wich program uses less battery .. cuz we dont have push like Whatsapp or something..

yehh that would be great.. cuz if im walking too my car and im on the wifi off my home.. its a shame that i need to reconnect manually to 3g to make a connection again -_-

if you go to internet connection settings, and change 'connect automatically' to any rather than wlan, this should be the expected behaviour. like i said the problem is free public hotspots with html passwords in this case. shouldn't be a problem walking to the car though. then again using IM while driving really isn't reccomended! :/

Testresults IM:
1. Skype idle 8h on 2G: Battery 97% down to 82% = 15% in 8h = 1,875% per hour.
2. Skype idle 8h on 3G: Battery 95% down to 79% = 15% in 8h = 1,875% per hour.
3. MSN Idle 9h on 2G: Battery 97% down to 74% = 23% in 8h = 2,555% per hour.
4. MSN idle 8h on 3G: Battery 96% down to 55% = 41% in 8h = 5,125% per hour.

Also Idle with nothing online:
8h on 2G: Battery 96% down to 89% = 7% in 8h = 0,875% per hour.

MSN Messenger eats your battery! But its reasonable on 2G.

it isn't the program (as I suspected), it is the protocol MSN uses. It effectively kills battery compared for example to jabber.

e: you could try using jabber with msn gateway.

(this is for iChat but should apply to n900 too)

I tested Jabber with msn gateway. Started it after charging completed.
Jabber Idle 9,5h on 2G: Battery 96% down to 86% = 10% in 9,5h = 1,052% per hour. (that was "lshal | grep battery")
But bq27200.sh showed down from 100% to 94% = 6%, thats 0,631% per hour.

It is not just the protocol.. It is the amount of activity you have. If you have lots of friends in MSN and only few in skype, MSN will eat more battery as your friends log in/log out/change status.

You are right, because trough day it dropped more faster. I have like 50 friends in msn.
And usually without IM battery drops to 50%.
