Goodbye N900. Hello N8!

After many happy months with my trusty N900, I have decided to take the plunge and go for a Nokia N8.

Yes. Back to Symbian! :( But apparently its meant to be quite good this time round.

Why am I abandoning the N900?

Well firstly, its a big chunky! Yes I got used to it now, but its still driving me crazy every now and then. The battery life isnt great either! My Maemo OS has never really been stable with hildon-desktop crashing every few days, which can be an annoyance. Additionally, the camera aint that great either, especially at night!

I still believe that the N900 is by far the best phone on the market today, and nothing even comes close to it at the moment!

I will move over to the N8, but definitely keep my N900 and I will be watching out for Meego 1.1 and also Nitdroid. Plus it will give me an incentive to hack the **** out of my N900! I will install Meego builds, and Nitdroid etc. Should be fun!

more importantly, I read some great things about the N8, and I would like your opinions about it.

At least you've got the idea of Anssi's "fight back" now.

Re: Goodbye N900. Hello N8!

I have been reading a lot of pre-production model reviews, and they have been really quite positive.

I am not a big fan of Symbian, but I thought that they might have made Symbian a lot better in ^3, as they took some Maemo features and implemented those.

So what should I do? Shall I just go for it?

To have better product, you have to solve the root cause. You have to change vendor.
There is no evidience that N9 should be OK. It's the same Nokia, why something should be changed?

Re: Goodbye N900. Hello N8!

hehehe...

actually my problem was that i couldn't decide whether to buy N8 or wait for the N9... now it is solved

But, if it turns out that N9 is disappointing... then i will have a new problem :)

lol @ doing the zoom gestures half a dozen times and failing every single one of them... and the dialpad freezing right after she said 'It's so smooth.'

This is part 2 of the video.
Ms. Blue Nails continues her rough and erratic demo of the N8.

To be honest it just seems to me that this girl doesnt know what she is doing. She is tapping the screen like crazy without even thinking. Half the time she doesnt even tap the right button on the screen.

N900 does that also if you have enough apps open.

Both N900 and N8 just doesn't have enough RAM imo.
So the true multitasking capability is both good and bad.
Not good for people who do not do housekeeping of apps well.

Why every other touch in maemo laggy? ;)
Yes, in clean rary case it's smooth. In the field -- phone/messaging/web is so...mmm.. jerky.

Don't these companies test the devices beforehand? Or are they really really really unlucky?

Re: Goodbye N900. Hello N8!

The *hardware* (everything "outside", not the CPU itself, and excluding the screen resolution) of the N8 is actually great - cool form factor, the quality of photos and videos taken is good, the HDMI out is awesome, USB host mode support - and it has a very good and fine-tuned tactile feedback (although I don't know if this is because of a better vibration motor, or if this is only a software thing). One thing that's missing is the HW keyboard. What's also awesome is that you can charge it not only via MicroUSB, but also with a normal Nokia charger (the one they used for the N8x0) - there is a separate charger hole for that. Not only does it reduce the wear on the USB port, but it also makes it possible to charge your device if you are on the go and don't have your MicroUSB adapter or cable with you.

The N900 still rocks hard from an OS/SW/hackability POV. You can't really beat having a standard Linux userland on such a phone - it's a huge advantage. If the Harmattan device combines all the good hardware features of the N8 with the hackability of the N900, it will be awesome. Now it's just a matter of how locked down the Harmattan device will be (Platform Security). Won't matter for end users (but might have side effects that affect them), but will matter for developers.

Crashes, a laggy UI and other UX problems can be fixed by software and firmware updates. They just take some time.

Given Nokia's Maemo history, I'm sure you can understand why I would feel a bit apprehensive about promises of bugfixes and firmware updates. Especially if Nokia sets this thing up in a way that makes customers depend heavily on Nokia to provide an official firmware image.

TiagoTiago 2010-09-20 11:38

Re: Goodbye N900. Hello N8!

they did do some significant fixes in previous Symbians with late firmware updates, no?

johnel 2010-09-20 11:49

Re: Goodbye N900. Hello N8!

The videos are funny and I defy anyone to write a mult-touch routine then can make sense out of random, spastic, involuntary finger movements

The only gesture vaguely understood was the "pinch to zoom in/out" but unfortunately the N8 seem to stutter as it tried to zoom the image.

Picture zooming should be silky smooth by now and on of the most visible ways to show off multi-gesture but by the looks of things Nokia still got it wrong.

It still Symbian-based which is fine but really Nokia are pushing the limits of Symbian. Great OS for budget low-spec handsets but anything beyond that is a struggle.

I came from the Symbian Nokia N95, I've tested the N97 and own now a N900.

The N900 has many problems and needs many Buxfixes but there is still NO WAY BACK to Symbian.

Then Nokia has bad news for you ;)

That's the only Nokia World hands on video where S^3 looks that bad. I wouldn't make too many conclusion on the basis of just one video. Who knows what hundreds of other event visitors had done, installed or left running on it. It looks much better on all other hands on videos I've seen.

Still, personally, not going anywhere near Symbian until S^4.

It has that skinny scroll bar on the right, but is a capacitive display?? Are we expected to grow our nails long or is there a capacitive stylus included?

(AFAIK) the tiny scroll bar is just a visual clue to show where you are on the list, not intended to be dragged.

It took me a little while to get used to that in my N900, and then i installed some programs that aren't hildonized and had to relearn the old ways again Xp

Re: Goodbye N900. Hello N8!

most of the other videos i have seen for n8 are nothing like that

i would say either this girl flipped it out with her ummmm 'touching' or this device had all sorts of stuff running in background from being out on demo floor.

I looked again. At 0:08 and 0:35 she seems to be using her blue nail to drag that scroll bar.

i dont think the girl is using the n8 wrongly. a buit hectic, yes, but it should react anyway.
i think the used device was just overloaded and needed a reboot.

Well the whole point of this thread is really, is it worth getting the N8?

After getting out of my diabolical contract with Vodafone, I am now wanting to sign up to a new contract. So I want a new phone too, so shall I get the N8 or not?

Most of the reviews I have read have actually been quite positive.
