UPnP Media Renderers
Anybody know of any good hardware UPnP Media Renderers? All I can find all over the internet is Media Servers and a few links to open source software media players.
Seriously the internet is flooded with UPnP Media Servers and I'm just wondering what the hell do these people use all those servers for without players? I'm returning my Squeezebox Radio because its got something loose inside it and I found a better deal on it. I'd rather have something that isn't tied to SB Server and can plug and play (hence UPnP). I'd really like to have something to fill up the Media Renderer section of Zhaan |
Re: UPnP Media Renderers
There are many players capable of connecting through UPnP.
Probably the best place to start is the wiki: Servers and Clients VLC and XBMC are pretty good for this purpose. The N900 does okay too. |
Re: UPnP Media Renderers
At home I use a PS3 and N900 as clients with good results out-of-the-box. (also many other computer based set ups but that's essentially software not hardware).

Re: UPnP Media Renderers
I own some Philips HiFi that is an UPnP server and renderer. The firmware is not very good (user unfriendly) but the sound quality is very good.

Roku Soundbridge. They are mostly EOLd but they really are well done.

Re: UPnP Media Renderers
hi all,
i use Mediatomb on my linux machine (ubuntu) for some raesons - i can use script(javascript) for making virtual directories for my differents medias, audio, video, pictures, playlist, onlineservice. -both mediaplayer, mediabox can use this server on the n900 for playing with very good quality -it can transcoding media too, and use vlc for this -it use a web page for administration And finaly i ve made symbolic link to my different storage device in my root media folder and it scan recursively and timed interval |
Re: UPnP Media Renderers
Right, there are tons of Media Servers out there, and tons of software that read UPnP servers, but they don't act as media renderers as far as I can tell. They act as control points.
There's a definite lack of media renderers and I don't understand it. UPnP is a powerful architecture that should be powering tons of really cool devices, not just servers. |
Re: UPnP Media Renderers
Hi Guys.
I have a ReadyNAS Duo which I store all my music on. I also have an Archos 605 WIFI which can 'stream' the music from my ReadyNAS Duo, no problem. I have now installed Zhaan on my N900 and what I want to do is, 'control' what music (or media) to play from my NAS on the Archos. Simple?!? Well I can see both devices but when I select a music track to play, nothing happens? Also at work, they have a sonos music system and with Zhaan I can see both the media server and the ZonePlayers. I select a song to play and the software shows me playing the file on the ZonePlayer .. but it isn't! Any suggestions please? |
Re: UPnP Media Renderers
The (software) UPnP renderer I use at home is gupnp-media-renderer. It doesn't work with Zhaan either. Maybe Zhaan is doing something wrong setting up the AV transport connection between media server and renderer?

It ran after starting it with gupnp-media-renderer. It works fine except that it doesn't accept event subscription renewals, so after 1800 seconds of playing, the client doesn't get any notifications anymore. :( |

Re: UPnP Media Renderers
For a while, I used TwonkyMedia as my server and a Roku Soundbridge as my renderer. The two worked well together. The Soundbridge required occasional reboots when it was connected to my network by WIFI. When connected by wired Ethernet, it was as stable as can be.
The Soundbridge has a bug in its UPnP implementation. It doesn't work with most UPnP controllers. It wouldn't work with Zhaan. I don't recall if it worked with Cidero, which appears to be unsupported these days. A couple of months ago, I gave up on UPnP and my Soundbridge. I'm using Music Player Daemon (mpd) on a Mac Mini. I control it with a Firefox plugin called Music Player Minion. From one browser, I can control all of the music players in the house. There is a maemo client, cutempc, in extras-devel that's OK but not quite ready for general use. |
Re: UPnP Media Renderers
I use ushare to serve my upnp share on my server (running Archlinux), and normally connect to my upnp share using this litte radio (sold for about 100 euros):
