New N900 or wait for E7 / N9
My N900 dropped from the bathroom counter onto the tile floor and the display no longer turns on. Other than that, the phone appears to be operational. Nokia will not fix it because it is not unwarrantable in their estimation.
I was planning on waiting for either the E7 (Symbian, but closer to what I need in a handset) or the N9 (whenever it is announced/released). In the meantime, I have been using my warhorse E71. |
Re: New N900 or wait for E7 / N9
In my opinion, usages are different. If you just want a phone, buy E7 or N8 or things like that.
But if you are something like a hacker (like me and many other people here) who likes to have a computer running GNU/Linux in pocket, buy a new N900. |

Tough one. It could be the screen only that is broken, you can fix that by replacing it with a new screen.

Hook it up using video out and see if it works, proves a screen fault then.

Re: New N900 or wait for E7 / N9
You should get to a service, there are multiple reasons for dead screen, it could be just a single cable ^^.

Re: New N900 or wait for E7 / N9
wait for N9 mate! don't buy N900 if you want to be up to date with technology. If you short in cash then buy N900 lol.

Re: New N900 or wait for E7 / N9
I bought a N900 2 days back and i love it. Bulky is my only complain but can pass on since i need physical keyboard.
I too thought for N9 but when is N9 going to release? Speculations say that its in 1Q 2011. Did anybody see this phone other that youtube video running non meego OS? If i was you i will go with known devil :D. |
Re: New N900 or wait for E7 / N9
whats the big deal with meego anyways? You would only be stuck in a QT only based linux OS that is hackable. Just like droid which runs only on java environment. Maemo is still the best. Nothing beats gtk + hildon + QT.

Android uses a pseudo-Java bytecode and provides zero compatibility with existing open source technologies that are found in most Linux distributions today. Your GTK applications will still be able to run on MeeGo. They never have been, and will continue to not be, able to run on Android. MeeGo and Android are nothing alike. |
Re: New N900 or wait for E7 / N9
yeah i know... I was comparing maemo which supports gtk, hildon and qt. While meego runs only on QT. GTK apps won't directly run in meego but meego apps since its QT based will be backwards compatible with maemo.

Re: New N900 or wait for E7 / N9
The N9 should be able to rape and pillage GTK multi-touch from Ubuntu 10.10 armv7.

Re: New N900 or wait for E7 / N9
How about disassemble it and reattach any loose parts? If there's no visible crack (I guess) then the screen would not be damaged this way. I guess the screen was just loosing from its connector. Since the warrant isn't covered anyway, it worths a try: http://www.nokian900applications.com...0-in-48-steps/

Don't know if it would work or not though. |
Re: New N900 or wait for E7 / N9
Another idea for testing that it works is to connect to it by ssh (you did install OpenSSH, didn't you!!) and then run x11vnc. You can then remote control all of the N900 from your desktop by vnc.

Re: New N900 or wait for E7 / N9
Q: What is better than an N900?
A: 2 N900's - double staying power I'd suggest you stick to your E71 hunt for the cheapest bargain on a 2nd hand N900. Repair the broken one eventually later or keep for spare parts. I have already 3 N900's. 1 new (still best overclocker) and 2 bargains. Personally I look out for N9 - but it still has to be announced and show an improvement over N900 + Maemo 5. Steve Jobs' capacitive screen doctrine might create be a first let down, Android interface of Meego another.. ;) The N7 may be the phone to replace that trusty E71 . |

See my video in my signature - screen replacement is fiddly but with care perfectly possible. I paid £40 for screen including next day delivery (link in video) so its worth fixing.:D |
Re: New N900 or wait for E7 / N9
i would open the phone from the back.
i think the screen connector lost contact. it was the case on mine too - after a drop in a train. the repair took maybe 10mins! |

@SSABoy and maxximuscool:
I simply asked a question, didn't know you can't answer. Also, thanks Hulmeth. But I don't think Nokia comes back to open-source, after what they did to N900, or at least they are not going to make N9 something like N900 in my opinion. Also, I agree with Radicalzz38... |

Re: New N900 or wait for E7 / N9
I really like my N900 and like the other comments, I would try to fix it first. We have a place called http://www.jetcitydevices.com/ who do a great job on all devices and are very reasonably priced.
My biggest complaint, and I am admittaly an expert in Linix and I usually used in the Symbian world programs that you just have in install. I like Mobipocket for book reading for all types of books including .PDB. I can't read them, as far as I know on my N900 like I can on my N97. I have ebook reader installed but it looks like only a certain few books can be read and I can't it to read .PDB books. These are the things that are very frustraiting to me about the N900 and I read that youi can't use Meego programs on the Maemo N900---it looks like the Maemo we have now is all there is as far as Maemo is concerned???? Any suggestions please---have been looking with interested at the new N7. Thanks, Bobby |
