multi partition SD card

Just got a 16 gig SD card and I am looking to check out some other operating systems on my n900, NitDroid and Meego later on when more functions are available.

I'm a bit hazy on the partitioning of the SD card. I found the guide on the NitDroid wiki: http://wiki.nitdroid.com/index.php?title=N900-install

I am wondering what extra steps I would need to add another 2 gb partition for the meego OS?. Is 2 gbs even enough for Meego?

Does multiboot install with NitDroid automatically, or do I have to still do that manually?

Thanks for any advice,

Re: multi partition SD card

So i tried to follow the instructions in the wiki and nothing seems to happen while partitioning.

i type in the sudo gainroot then umount /dev/mmcblk1p1 and i get unmount: not found

if I try any of the other lines I press enter and nothing seems to happen. The courser just hops to the next line blinking.

and I tried out making a 3rd partition after that by adding to what was in the wiki:

sfdisk -uM /dev/mmcblk1 << EOF
,<YOUR NUMBER IN MB>,C
,<YOUR NUMBER IN MB>,D
,,L
,,
EOF

umount /dev/mmcblk1p1

mkdosfs /dev/mmcblk1p1
mke2fs -D Meego -j -m0 /dev/mmcblk1p2
mke2fs -L NITDroid -j -m0 /dev/mmcblk1p3

But like everything else, it didnt seem to do anything.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: multi partition SD card

alright so i kept typing unmount for some reason.. no wonder xterm was telling me i was stupid.

so nex i try:

Code:

Nokia-N900:~# sfdisk -uM /dev/mmcblk1 << EOF
> ,<10000>,C
> ,<2000>,L
> ,,L
> ,,
> EOF

and get:
Code:

Checking that no-one is using this disk right now ...
OK

Disk /dev/mmcblk1: 486192 cylinders, 4 heads, 16 sectors/track
Old situation:
Units = mebibytes of 1048576 bytes, blocks of 1024 bytes, counting from 0

Device Boot Start End MiB #blocks Id System
/dev/mmcblk1p1 0+ 15193- 15194- 15558136 b W95 FAT32
/dev/mmcblk1p2 0 - 0 0 0 Empty
/dev/mmcblk1p3 0 - 0 0 0 Empty
/dev/mmcblk1p4 0 - 0 0 0 Empty
trailing junk after number

sfdisk: bad input

trying to make a 10 gb partition and two 2 gb partitions for meego and andriod.

lol now what am i doing worng?

Re: multi partition SD card

Try it with out these <> when you write your numbers, as i remember thy should not be there to make it work ;)

wakkamis 2010-09-24 21:08

Re: multi partition SD card

Yup was just going to post that i did it without the <>
then after a reboot I was able to make up the other 2 partitions with:

Code:

mkdosfs  /dev/mmcblk1p1
mke2fs -L NITDroid -j -m0 /dev/mmcblk1p2
mke2fs -L Meego -j -m0 /dev/mmcblk1p3

Lucky I made that 2nd partition nitdroid, because auto installer seemed to just choose that drive.

right now waiting for the long download.

Thanks for letting me think allowed here on the forums.:D

Re: multi partition SD card

Perhaps it's easier to partition the SD card in Ubuntu using gparted (especially if you want multiple partitions)? I did that when I was trying Easy Debian.
Don't have clue how to this in Windows.

Wow, this is incredibly refreshing for this forum, someone asking a question in a polite way and then giving it a go entirely by themselves and asking the right questions in the right way when stuck.

Well done, no seriously I'm not being sarcastic, this forum really does need more people like you (I'm not forgetting all of the insanely talented people here, thank you as well).

Re: multi partition SD card

I am slightly less talented. So i tend to get stuck on the small things. ;)

I did look up partitioning an SD card with windows. They wanted you to mess with the registry and try and tell windows that the SD card wasnt a removable card...

seemed easier to just mess with it in Xtem.. whats the worst that could happen? I would have to learn how to flash my n900? heh.

In fact, I repartitioned my SD card on the N900 using gparted in Easy Debian. :)

Re: multi partition SD card

Alright, not sure if i can trouble shoot myself around this one.

Getting an issue while installing NitDroid now. Automatic Failure. :/

Code:

Type 'YES' if you accept the terms and take the risk >YES

Good! Here we go.

Uninstalling any incompatible software ...done
Formatting /dev/mmcblk1p1 (vfat) ...done
Formatting /dev/mmcblk1p2 (ext3) ...expr: non-numeric argument
sh: 0: unknown operand
done

Going to download the installation files. This will take a rather long time!

Downloading nitdroid.manifest ...done
Mounting /dev/mmcblk1p2 ...done
Extracting NitDroid-0.0.8-Popov.tar.bz2 ...FAILURE. Bailing out.

Guess I'll try uninstalling and re-installing the auto installer.

Re: multi partition SD card

I had the same kind of trouble with the auto-installer. Here is how I solved it.

Go here: http://wiki.nitdroid.com/index.php?title=N900-install

Follow the section Step 1: Partitioning and do exactly what it says. If you have sshd running on your N900 and are able to use a computer to copy/paste the commands, it may be easier. You need to be especially careful in the "sfdisk" command to type it exactly as it is shown there. Beware, this will erase anything that's on your SD card.

When you get to "Step 2: Installation", forget about it, and use the auto-installer instead. Now hopefully it will work for you.

Once you have NITDroid installed and working, you can then use gparted to resize the partitions (without losing any of your data), and making room for additional partitions to use for whatever you want.

In my case I used gparted inside of Easy Debian on my N900. The UI is not optimal, and it took quite a long time to move 2GB of data on the Class 2 SD card, but it worked flawlessly.

Re: multi partition SD card

I'm not sure but it could be that you don't have bzip2 installed?

Did you do this before starting the installer?

apt-get install bzip2 wget
apt-get install multiboot multiboot-kernel-maemo

If yes i'm not sure why it's bailing?

You could turn to this forum for help wich is the official site for NITdroid, most problems has been asked and solved ;)

Re: multi partition SD card

So I made sure I had everything I needed to install NitDroid first and xtarm told me I already had bzip2 and wget.

Next I tried partitioning the card exactly as described by the wiki using the recommended 14100 setting leaving me with only 1 gb of space for nitdroid.

after both events I am still getting tuck on the "Extracting NitDroid-0.0.8-Popov.tar.bz2"

Guess I'll check out the nitdroid forums for further info.

Thanks a bunch guys. :)

Re: multi partition SD card

So it turns out 16 gig sandisk cards just dont seem to want to deal with nitdroid.

Installed just fine on an 8 gig sandisk.

Rest of the story can be followed over at teh nitdroid forums: http://forum.nitdroid.com/index.php?topic=431.0

going to order a kingston 16 gig and see how that goes as my next option.

wakkamis 2010-10-06 17:38

Re: multi partition SD card

Ended up getting my 16 gb kingston flash card. Made 3 partitions on it from all I have learned by messing around and from Maemo and Nitdroid forums.

Install went smoothly! Altho It seems I can only use Wifi to get to the net in Nitdroid, but i think thats just how it is for now.

Now I need ot figure out how to get Meego on here :D

Just thought I would share.

Re: multi partition SD card

I would like to state a scenario that I am trying to create on my N900. I have an 8GB Memory Card and I would really like to have it partitioned such that one partition runs NITDroid, and one other partition will be used by Maemo to store some data. is this possible? If yes, what should I do? I am a bit hazy with the entire partitioning stuff.... well totally hazy to be precise.
