BBC iPlayer Working Again N900!!

Finally after hours of messing around I've cracked it!

Here are the instructions to get iPlayer working on the N900 again...

Step 1: Install the application ‘Hide User Agent’ from the N900 Extras-Devel repositories.

Step 2: Open the N900 SETTINGS and select under Connectivity the ‘Hide User Agent’.

Step 3: Press the 'User Agent' Button, and input the following string without "" quotes

"Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-us; Nexus One Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1"

Select Ok and then press Set.

Step 4: Restart the Browser and visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer

Voala the Google Android Low quality flash site working on the N900.

Remember if you want to go back to the N900 UserAgent to remove it from the settings menu.

-Update 24/09/2010 23:43 -

PLEASE NOTE: To Access the Ovi Store webpage you have to switch the user agent back to Maemo

Re: BBC iPlayer Working Again N900!! + Vodafone TV

I Have also managed to get Vodafone Mobile TV Working on the N900, although unfortunately its using the N95 Stream so the quality is pretty low.

Please Note the obvious: this will only work for Vodafone users!

So you can either do this in Microb using the technique above and use this next UserAgent string, or you can do what I did...

Step 1: Install the following apps on your n900, fAPN, Firefox.

Step 2: Use fAPN to create a new APN named WAP (Or Anything)

Step 3: In the settings menu, edit the connection you just made using the following information....

Access Point (Contract): wap.vodafone.co.uk
Access Point (PAYG) : pp.vodafone.co.uk
Username: wap
Password: wap
Gateway (IP) address: 212.183.137.12

Step 4: Open firefox and enter About:Config and hit enter. (If it warns you just agree)

Step 5: Add a New Preference String, Call it general.useragent.override and then input the value below without quotes

"Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.2; U; Series60/3.1 NokiaN95/11.0.026; Profile MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413"

click off of the object to save it and then restart firefox

Step 6: Ensure you are connected to the Wap APN you just created then browse to the site http://live.vodafone.co.uk

You will now be on the Vodafone N95 Wap site, Obviously the content like Games and other stuff will not work on your N900 as it is not running Symbian OS but you can use the Mobile TV.

If you are worried that it doesn't work and don't want to buy before knowing then I can assure you it works as I already had a subscription and tested it.

Again its pretty low quality but it works!!

Re: BBC iPlayer Working Again N900!!

I would e-mail the iplayer's webmaster to be sure they are aware that the Android version also works for N900, maybe they can add N900's useragent to their detection and feed us the working version without the need for us to mangle our UA.

Now, for those of us in the US, how do we even get the iPlayer in Firefox? Have you guys already watched the new Sherlock Holmes series?

I think it is only for residents of UK. To use it in USA you'll need to cheat it by using a proxy in UK... In Fennec type "about:config" into the address bar and filter by the word "proxy", there you can set up your proxy information.

That's a great Idea, I will do that.

Its Theoretically possible still on the n900, you would need to find a UK proxy to point your n900 connection to, unfortunately the only ones that would really be fast enough to stream bbciplayer are paid for as far as I can find.

I did however manage to watch bbciplayer when I was in Australia once by using a UK proxy that cost me I think about £10 a month, but was a free month trial.

I've set myself up a personal blog so I can blog about my N900 experience, I've added these finding to the blog and will be putting some other cool things there.

wait wait wait, fennec has flash ????!!??

Re: BBC iPlayer Working Again N900!!

nope, it would'nt work. you would need to use microb. you can stick the proxy settings in the network connection in advanced settings so no need to edit browser settings.

Best workaround yet! Many thanks, regnighc

Re: BBC iPlayer Working Again N900!!

Umm - could someone look into developing an applet to toggle between standard and "iPlayer-enabled" mode? I'm going to pass this thread to the BBC Backstage mailing list to see if they could find someone within the Beeb to get us authorised...

I'm not a dev.. but I am chafing under the no-iPlayer-on-N900 issue.

Thread has been referred to BBC Backstage.

Re: BBC iPlayer Working Again N900!!

Thanks for this...I may try it tomorrow but the iplayer has always, and still does work for me through the standard site with microb, sometimes it can take 3 or 4 minutes to buffer and stop jerking but it eventually does, other times it takes about 30 seconds and then i just scroll back to the beginning.
But it's always good to find other ways too...so again, thanks.

Re: BBC iPlayer Working Again N900!!

Not that I mind anyone accessing the beeb's i-player, in fact I approve. It's just that they'll do their utmost stop stop it happening rather than help us. They would cite things like "license fee" and "rights issues abroad" to justify this.

regnighc 2010-10-09 10:30

Re: BBC iPlayer Working Again N900!!

I don't think they will, we are not bypassing that level of security.

We are just trying to bring compatibility to another Phone.

I have had a reply from the BBC who have advised that they will be testing this out.

This still doesn't allow people outside of the UK to watch it as that is based on IP location.

yes you can, search this forum for queen beecon user agent switcher, and you will find some widgets that toggle between adnroid browser agent, n900's and the iphone's one, its pretty cool, try it out.

@elie-7, re Queen Beecon user agent switcher - has this been added to the repositories yet? EG - has it made it into Extras yet?

Re: BBC iPlayer Working Again N900!!

BBC iplayer not working again.
I can get past the fact that BBC is forcing a redirect to a mobile site by playing around with different user agents but I cannot get any content to play.
Anyone managed to work around?
Anyone care anymore???

Thanks,

Re: BBC iPlayer Working Again N900!!

Yeah. I found this out the other day as well. It won't even let you access the site anymore. It just says "your mobile is not supported". So annoying. I tried changing the reported flash version to android and dektop. Neither worked. I also tried hiding browser agent and changing to desktop. No luck there either. Looks like we've been cut-off. Very annoying.

Not tried BBC iPlayer for a while but still seems to work on the following site with the user agent detailed below; but stutters more than I remember it.

Site:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer/

User agent:
Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-us; Nexus One Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1

Also using AND 10,1,61,0 flash version.

Thanks. That helps with browsing the iplayer site, e.g. to see what episodes are available, but playback seems to be very jerky for me.

Thanks,

Download the tweak flash plugin as mentioned above. I don' t think the flash version is important to performance though, just try changing the user agent.

BBC iplayer is not 100 per cent smooth on my phone with this method but certainly much better than the big screen link above.

This has worked for me.
I mainly use for streaming radio so this is perfect.

I wonder how long before BBC close all loop holes?

So, is there a method which allows access to decent quality video too?

Re: BBC iPlayer Working Again N900!!

if you pop out the window it uses a smaller resolution and thats pretty smooth for me.

Nope this is not possible due to the way iPlayer has been developed.

...and besides folk that live in the UK have to pay for iPlayer via the license fee. Would you be prepared to pay if it WAS possible?

The big screen site no longer seems to work for me; the programme page displays, but the window in which the "video" (in quotes as I usually use it for Radio 4 shows I've missed) should be stays resolutely blank. Anyone else with the same snag or, more hopefully, found a workaround?

Latest flash player? On the N900? Is that via TweakFlash version spoofing or is there an update to stock Flash player?
