Welcome to the wonderful world of the N900. Beware, it is highly addictive.

welcome on board. I am from 770 era, still have a lot to learn on the N900 and over 10 months by now, still fascinated by what one can do with it. And am looking for additional one too. Amazon is sellinf for $399.99 free shipping......still a little more than my 'hobby' budget. How much you paid for it? And sachin007 is 100% correct, it is highly addictive :)

So far, as a hobbyist device Nokia and this loose organization of forum rats, semi and full blown coders, hackers, and developers have given me the biggest bang for the buck.

It ain't the latest and greatest in some specific ways, but I'm always finding new things to do with it that many of the latest and greatest gadgets haven't even thunk about doing yet.

In that way the N900 has remained cutting edge and in the entire time I have owned it, all those things it can now do hasn't cost me any additional coin.

Welcome on board and enjoy your own bad self. :)

EDIT; I forgot to add:

Once this new purchase euphoria wears off, I think you are entitled to one free rant thread about all the things it can't do. :p

It has been my experience that this rant is prompted by not being able to do the one thing you hoped it could do mixed with a bunch of self loathing fueled by evaluating what you could have bought with the money instead. :)

No need to fear. All is not lost because it has also been my experience that once someone in this group figures out what it is you want to do with your N900, if it is at all possible; they will provide you with the help and means to do it.

When this occurs more of those other things you'll be able to figure out yourself or at least know where to get the help you might need.

In some cases you'll now find that the N900 can do some of those specific things better than the latest and the greatest because you were able to decide how, and made it happen the way that you wanted it to.

It's all part of the Love/Hate/Love cycle all N900 owners seem to experience. :D

Faulty? in what way?
Nice to read you're still very enthusiastic even after this bad start :)

This N900 is so much different from my last devices..
My last few phones were great, but after 2-4 weeks, I had pretty much seen everything it could do, and the excitement was over.
However, the N900 still amazes me every day! mostly because of this community, all the apps and possibilities.. :D currently I'm browsing/typing while it's connected to my TV, which is awesome :D

Re: Im soo damn happy!

welcome! i love my 900. nolt sure where the hate comes from. its been 10 months and my phone is/has worked flawlessly. yes issues arise but this is an amaizing communiity that will always help solve any questions. in fact id say most of the issues i have come across are my error in not knowing..

i do suggest you read up on the battery usage threads. this phone is a hog and drains like a laptop, but with the right apps and settings it can last all day with much use.

Unreadable sim is one of the syndrome of downgrading the firmware from PR1.2 to PR1.1. Since yours is stock product, I don't think that's the case.

However, you must make sure the sim could really work on your N900. We've a case here in China some sim issued by China Mobile is not readable by N900. It's due to some default 'sim service' implemented. The solution is to disable all those 'sim service' with other mobile phone and then plug it back to N900.

So you'd better take the sim in question with you when pick up the N900 tomorrow so that you can test on spot.

I love my N900 have had it since March of this year so I am still new to it, BUT I wouldn't trade it for anything else. I have made some of my Apple Fanboy friends drool LMAO

Re: Im soo damn happy!

I had it for over a month now and is still discovering new things to do with it. Once in a while while browsing or reading with FBreader, i just take a moment to step back, look at the awesome screen and go ga-ga.
And the apps, unlike the apple apps, are all very useful (well 99%- i dunno what to do with that app where u can check how high you can throw it) and increase the functionality of the device in someway. And if there is something new you'd like, instead of waiting for the overlords (Apple, HTC, Nokia) to implement it, we can do it ourselves or (as is in my case), beg the local gurus for help. It's just an amazing community.

Yeah, I like to see tempers up!
Welcome to community, I'm rather a new N900 owner, but I think I can confirm the said above... I love it, have never hated it, but it can turn annoying sometimes, so you must be patient, conscious of what it 'is' and get used to some trick-ish things related with day-to-day usage...
Issues, or questions? Consider first looking for related topics and threads in the forum, and you may find it already solved/asked, or find out it has simply no solution at the moment/never... je...
Welcome again!

Yep, had it since mars.. got seducted by it's debian linux interrior. I have even started to teach my self some basic programming so i can repay this community. It still blows me away what it can do.. :)

Some tip:
a) learn about extras-testing and extras-devel repositories
b) install rootsh
c) install Faster Application Widget (better than the stock)
d) install Filebox (better than the stock)
e) install Dropn900
f) install Theme Customizer
g) learn about SSH (but is a bit advanced..)

Thanks to Vodafone messing up my contract and me taking advice from others in this comunity, I have managed to wangle a brand new Iphone 4 out of the buggers.

I will never stop messing about with my N900 though. It really is the best phone/tablet I have ever used, adictive as crack too.

N900 for best, Iphone for the rest:)

welcome to n900 world!! Here are some notes to get you started.
1. Start learning shell commands.
2. Enjoy fixing it rather than getting annoyed with it.
3. Explore it.
4. Prepare for trolls, dumb critics and hot headed persons here. Just ignore them they got no life.
5. Before asking here learn how to use search and keywords.

Beware you need to be little more techy than one using other smartphone else you may just regret. I am also expecting to get one for cheap price but hmmm seems like I still have to wait.

I would add to keep an eye on your rootfs folder if you're going to install applications from extras-testing and extras-devel, as you'll run into problems if it gets too full.

It's easy enough to put a widget on your desktop to show how full your rootfs is.

Kind regards,
D4rKlar

Or perhaps they have something they are genuinely unhappy about and feel should not be an issue in a device they paid so much money for. Is that not a possibility at all? Or is it the case that anyone that does not love every single thing about the n900 has no life?
