[Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

This is based on the newest modest source from gitorious, which means it includes a lot of fixes that make modest faster.

I've added (experimental) portrait mode support to modest, I might go on and do this to some other stock open source apps (the settings app would be one)

http://i51.tinypic.com/2uzz90i.jpg

Code:

root
wget http://mohammadag.xceleo.org/public/maemo/debfiles/portrait/modest_3.2.13-3+0m5_armel.deb
dpkg -i modest_3.2.13-3+0m5_armel.deb

Pin the package with
Code:

echo "Package: modest
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 1001" >> /etc/apt/preferences

Other fixes:

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

Sorry, but this version of Modest is semi-broken in the portrait mode. The new-message UI does not resize, and the new-message button at the top does not resize either. There are probably a few other problems there as well. May want to fix these before making it a part of the SSU.

MohammadAG 2010-10-03 11:46

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

This isn't part of the SSU, and I already mentioned this is experimental ;)

That was my wishful thinking, sorry ;)

Out of curiosity before trying it: What portrait support did you actually add? Or did you just enable the already existing portrait support (shift+control+R)?

At least the existing portrait support doesn't work too well for modest so hopefully you have managed to improve that ;)

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

With (shift+control+r) right now when I lock the phone modest in portrait and then unlock I can see that modest switches from landscape to portrait. Is it different with this version?

Hold the power button for long enough, and it will power down. Wait for 30-40 seconds, then press the power button again (for a few seconds) and it will power up. After it does, make sure you never ever install anything that does not come from Extras or Extras-Testing repositories. All these "other" packages are for people who can handle problems that may (possibly) come with them.

great man ! if you could do this for the conversation app it would be perfect ^^

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

wait, i installed it and made the mod but when i turn the phone nothing happens... i need to press ctrl+shift+r to make it work :(

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

Works pretty well for me.... waiting for conversations portrait mode now... :)

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

works ok but still need to activate ctrl shift r first.

btw, a bit off topicl but is there a way to view a meeting request's date and time before accepting or rejecting it? kinda stupid to show a meeting request and i cannot decide whether to accept it or not because i dont know if it will clash with another meeting in my calendar. doesn't modest have this information?

MohammadAG 2010-10-03 15:38

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

The whole point of this package is to stop using ctrl+shift+r since I think it's not the easiest shortcut to press when using the phone with one hand.
Try rebooting your device, hildon-desktop can be an *** sometimes (happens with all apps using the SUPPORT flag for portrait mode (e.g facebrick))

droll 2010-10-03 15:55

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

yeah, after rebooting, it is ok.

btw, do you know where modest stores emails? i'm trying to figure out if i can solve the problem above by having a look at e-mail bodies inside my mail for exchange local cache.

heh... yet another build of modest with few existing patches + WIP one. Concentrate on Modest 3.4 branch instead, apply those 2 patches + your one and will get nicer ver.

current modest in portrait is hard to use as next/prev mail buttons are not on screen.

current version is great for me, a little buggy but no worse that the rest of my phone! i always reboot after installing something so never noticed it not working till rebooting

I know all the risks I take.. dont worry

my issue is just that my phone boots normaly but when it s time to load my desktop it reboots.
I ve put it in R&D mode with no-life-guard flag.. but I don't think it is a very good long term solution

So is there a way to restore modest before the modification to see if it is the source of my problem?

thanks

Modest isn't really needed at boot up, some people have it uninstalled, so it can't be the source of your problem.
Anyways, rm /etc/apt/preferences and apt-get upgrade should restore modest (and remove any other backports)

Yeah, that's a localization problem afaik (po/mo files missing strings), timeless knows a fix for it, I'll ask him about it.

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

i tried rebooting 2 times and it still won't go to portrait mode automatically. i still had to do the ctrl+shift+r thing.

Hello Mohamad,
Does this new package installed ontop of the original one? Can it be easily revert back to stock Modest?

This would make it easier for newbies as well. Thanks

Thank Mohammad,
I'm testing this now.

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

Thank you very much Mohammad and the team :D
Works flawlessly. Love it. Been waiting for this a long time ago :D

I wander why Nokia didn't look into this and enable it? Why would Nokia expecting people to manually enable ctrl shift r? None sense.

If it is just a matter of changing the configuration and re-arranging the layout. Why not just take a few hours and enable it.

ANyway did you upload this to the image based? as a fixed for the next release OS version?

maxximuscool 2010-10-03 21:20

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

Mohammad, this fixed of your is great but I found a little buggy with the portrait scrolling. It slower than lanscape and screen tearing when scrolling up and down. Notice when you reached the top and it tearing the page.

But overall it is still better than what ever Nokia provide us :D

MohammadAG 2010-10-03 21:35

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

The portrait tearing thing is the same as the one in the phone app, or the file browser (ctrl+shift+r), so I'm guessing it's caused by libhildon, not by the patch itself :)

P.S. I'd like to thank lcuk, without him, I would've given up on editing source code three months ago :D

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

Even though the portrait mode works fine, I'm having problem forwarding my company emails with attachments. The emails that are forwarded show up in the 'text' format... and without any attachments. The same emails were working fine with the default modest.

Is there something I need to do to make this work?

little_beat 2010-10-04 14:34

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

Just installed it today - so far so good. Don't care too much about portrait mode, but seems quite useful when reading inbox.
The only issue I've had is ctrl+enter shortcut not working. It used to send out current message, but the only way to do this now is clicking "send" button on the top. not that it's that critical, but a fix would be appreciated.
Thanks again for the work you've done, modest now seems a bit snappier.

Same here...
Can you fix it ?

Changing prefs to text only seems to fix the problem

I can confirm this. I changed the preference in emails to 'plain text' and now I can forward the same emails along with attachments.

Re: [Announce] Portrait mode support in modest (w/ fixes)

another quick bug report. if email you have received has long non-breaking line you are unable to move/pull the screen to the right to see rest of the message
