Ovi Apps, Which Ones Are Open-Source?
Hey... I'd like to know which one of the apps on Ovi store is open-source... I just see Free over there, which I think means I don't have to pay for them... But is there a way to see the license? Thanks in advance.

but really do u need a lisence to tweak ?? you already have root access and you can do what ever you want with your files, go for it. |
Re: Ovi Apps, Which Ones Are Open-Source?
I like to know if an app is open-source, before installing it... Firefox is open-source...
One other thing... Is Angry Birds open? |
Re: Ovi Apps, Which Ones Are Open-Source?
no angry birds is closed, tw why do u care if its open source or not ?

Re: Ovi Apps, Which Ones Are Open-Source?
Because I don't like close-source things...
Thanks mate! |
Re: Ovi Apps, Which Ones Are Open-Source?
no prob mate, i don't like closed sourced things 2.
they feel for some reason apple related . long live open source :D . for some reason open source feels gangsta ! hat makes no sense, i know. |
Re: Ovi Apps, Which Ones Are Open-Source?
Which makes me wonder: If, for example, somebody uploads GPLed content to the Ovi Store (and maybe uses some also GPLed third party code in his project) - how can he make sure the sources are readily available for those who download from the store? As for as I know Ovi Store doesn't provide a download section for source packages, does it?

1. Specify that it's source is openly available and include the link in the description. 2. Include an 'About' tab with the license and a link to the source. 3. Post HERE. Ovi store is better than the repositories for recognition. Only approx 50,000 registered users vs. more than 100,000 Maemo5 users. And each N900 comes with a link to the Ovi store. It wouldn't be completely unreasonable if a developer wants to share his work using the best way. ** Edit** There was an article saying that Nokia were surprised by how much the N900 sold. It said it sold 100,000 in the first 5 weeks, so I'd say total sales are probably more than 300,000. |

What Ovi Store can do is give you access to Symbian users. BTW, where did you get the "more than 100,000 Maemo users" from? |
Re: Ovi Apps, Which Ones Are Open-Source?
yes there's more than a 100000 n900 users out there, reported by nokia.

Re: Ovi Apps, Which Ones Are Open-Source?
ahhh... was that the number that they corrected when (who was it? engadget?) claimed they had only sold so few N900s? and then nokia said that was during the first 5 weeks, not in total? was that it? if so, it's not onle "more than 100,000", it's probably "a multitude of 100,000". - last time i checked the N900 was still among amazon germany's best selling 3G phones. (even among the top 10 IIRC)

Re: Ovi Apps, Which Ones Are Open-Source?
Just a question for my personal interest. Will you pay for an application which is open source in OVI but it is not free of charge?

Do I know where to get the application for free? Is it in Extras, properly packaged? Or would I have to download the sources and compile them myself? What price are we talking about? €0,90 or €20? How big is the "Thank You"-factor, in other words: How likely is it I would donate anyway (and find the price in the Ovi Store a good donation)? If there's an application I could download and compile for Maemo for free... but I could also get the packaged binary from the store, I'd most probably pay for the convenience. Not € 50,-, of course, but I'd pay. Those €0,90-apps wouldn't even make me look for gratis alternatives. If I like it, I click "download" without thinking too much. It's just money after all. ;) On the other hand, if something I use regularly is both in Extras and in the Ovi Store, I'd use the version from Extras any time, no matter what price tag in has in the Store. Extras makes sure I get updates if they're available. I have not seen this for payed applications from the Ovi Store. Then, finally, there's these applications you donate for. The usual procedure is through PayPal, which I find clumsy. I might just download an application from the Ovi Store (and pay for it) even if I already have the free version installed just to avoid the PayPal-hassle. |
Re: Ovi Apps, Which Ones Are Open-Source?
ok ok ok, thanks for the info mate, yes it was the engadget one, btw how many n900 users there is out there ???

i rofl to the 1st page posters hahaha! Nice one there... I know you're serious but I still find it funny. Thanks btw! :)
just my 2 cents... Using closed source doesn't mean you liked them. |
