how dare you post something positive. talk.maemo is only about farewell rants how the N900 didn't deliver, or arguments over how many times people have been disappointed over Nokia's abandonment of N900. this positivity must end now.

meego is not coming to N900.

so it might work, but the UI is going to suck.

well, if it doesn't suck, then i guess great, but you should've bought an andorid-based phone since everyone has one and it's not nokia.

and what's so special about meego anyway?

I especially liked this part

The PR 1.3 update is quite close now, and with that you can easily dual boot between Maemo and Meego on your N900. :D

sorry to hurt your feelings. and i appreciate the pointer how not to do sarcasm; i'll keep that in mind on this and my follow-up posts. unfortunately, now that you told me to go away, i'll have to do the exact opposite :)

meego is fun (have had it on a netbook for months) and i'm excited that there's some positive "official" communication regarding meego and N900.

Amazingly good news! I am excited to hear that Maemo is moving forward with PR1.3 AND further Meego development. It sounds like there are N900 fans with high positions at Nokia that see the value in not letting the N900 become a lost cause.

I totally knew what you were doing from the beginning. It made me smile. ;)

I am certainly glad to hear that there is someone working on the N900. I am still quite happy with it, but there are some refinements that could be made. Looking forward to 1.3. :cool:

You N900 folks are kind of l like modern day HAM radio hobbiest ;)

In Nokias limp defense, they did say this device and OS were a stepping stone.

The irony is all they had to do was release Flash 10.1 and a lot of the other accumulating issues would be forgotten. How hard world that have been?

not exactly. I haven't needed flash 10 after tweak flash version -app and I am excited about official support for multiboot. of course this might be a dream and I'll wake up soon.

lets hope this update brings hd recording. seriously, we just need the software! the hardware is already awesome on the n900.
if the iphones shitty camera can shoot 720p, then why cannot n900's
carl zeiss optics do the same? ITS ALL SOFTWARE. even the 0.7 pix
camera at the back of the itouch can shoot 720P. I seriously hope meego's camera driver will be open like ofono phone modem so we could tweak it ourself to add 720P. That is if its already not coming in PR1.3.
cmmmmon someday leak the date of release on the net.

if you pop in the meego forums, there's quite a bit of buzz going on, and not just on the handset section. the netbook version is quite refined already (though lack of java on netbook is a kinda biggie for me); haven't had the ballz to venture out installing meego on my n900 yet. once 1.1 is officially out and maemo 1.3 installed, i'll give it a shot.

really would like to have ubuntu and meego alongside with maemo, making the N900 the ultimate mobile machine.

Remember this.. also, it's not a Nokia product in any way.

Also, for good measure, dual boot isn't 'easily', what's being included in PR1.3 kernel is kexec functionality. Right now we actually have a very easy 'dual boot' (write an image to your microsd, load using PC flasher)

The verdict on what specific technology to use for actual multiboot is still up in the air, but we're bordering on u-boot still as the usual multiboot solution isn't suitable for MeeGo and >2.6.28 kernels.

PR 1.3 have been said long time ago that it will come to the N900. But now just because the release is close there is more love from nokia then a week ago? All this nokia left us stuff is just ridicilous and we will start hearing this again one week after 1.3 is released.

Nokia need to be careful here; there are certain tech journos and bloggers who will 'review' Meego on N900 as if it were the finished article.... Remember Eldar Murtazin's damning preview of the N8?

If the press is too negative, meego's impact on the market may be impaired. If I were Nokia I'd delay Meego for N900 until after the launch iof the official first meego device (N9?).

Whatever the outcome, all we'll get is Meego for N900 - NOT Nokia's UI layer that sits on top of it and gives the OS some real shine. I for one expect to use Maemo5 for some time to come.

Bring on PR1.3:cool:

Keep in mind that 1.1 will be just about usable. Release 1.2 might be a better candidate for installation:

Minor notice: SGX drivers means updated ones. We have SGX drivers already but they're damn slow compared to what's possible to integrate.

I'm not following..

This has nothing to do with N9. This is a PR1.3 update to Maemo 5. The update doesn't include MeeGo, it includes a newer kernel for Maemo 5 which enables the bits necessary for dual booting.

MeeGo(the open source project from Linux Foundation, with the reference Handset UX) has been coming to N900 all along and shouldn't be news to anyone at this point. There is a professional team doing the porting effort with support from Nokia side. This however, is not what will be on the N9. This won't include proprietary bits like Flash, Ovi Maps, or other Nokia specific stuff.

This MeeGo 1.1 is not going to be an all polished platform either so set your expectations on a reasonable level, but it's only getting better and if you're not comfortable waiting for the 1.2 in April you can keep up with the development with weekly built images.

I don't think we will se a Meego device before 2011. As have been said.. they have had some delays. So late januari early februari is my bet. PR1.3 will hopefully come soon.. in november.

Keep in mind that Nokias new strategy is to release the device quickly after the announcement.
For example check the C7.
It is shipping now and it was announced at Nokia World on 14 September.
That's exactly four weeks back now.

The N8 was only announced because of Eldars stupid (p)review.

Also you can expect a similar marketing campaign for the N9 like there was/is for the N8.

To be part of the christmas selling rush but keeping the one-month-to-release strategy, Nokia needs to announce the N9 in the week of 15 November.
Coincidence that in that week there is the MeeGo Conference, isn't it?

The general "PR 1.3" thread and this "news about MeeGo on N900" thread are about 2 distinct things. PR 1.3 and MeeGo are not the same, nor is any speculation about the release date of PR 1.3 connected to technical details of dual.booting Maemo and MeeGo due to fixes in the kernel.

I would rather not see the threads merged.

I think they will release PR 1.3 before 21st October.
As Meego 1.1 release is schedule for 21st October to have it in our devices we need a dual boot solution.
