PR1.3: users, was it worth the wait?
 

Well I'll be damned, those two drunk schmucks in MeeGo janitor closet aka Maemo HQ actually put out the next N900 update: the infamous PR1.3 :cool:

Are there any noticable changes so far?

In other news, Angry Birds was released on Android Market last week, its the full game and the best thing about it was that it is completely free :)

Wasn't even worth installing it. Changes: some people have new bugs :D. About Angry Birds, isn't it ad supported?

I'm happy using the phone I investigated and read reviews about before purchasing.
Unlike some, I don't buy products in the hope they'll be improved in the future, but as they are at the time of purchase.

ads only show up half the time in the bottom right corner when you reload a level. Its a fair trade off for the complete game for free :p

Tablet operates more smoothly. Email to IMAP servers refreshes more quickly.Otherwise, same great device as before!

But, the biggest benefit of PR1.3 is the Qt update. This means we can now share apps with Symbian, Meego etc. Developers won't have to ponder the economics of doing a Maemo5 only port.

Yes latest QT is biggest news in pr1 3. I am not sure but it seems like qtapps has been a bit snappier in this release too :D

so all the whinners out there N900 is NOT DEAD. with QT(quick) on both latest symbian phones and upcoming Meego we will hopefully get alot more apps also on N900 :)

Regular Guy here! don't know what to look out for, zootube still don't work on my phone but i hope it does something good for the phone .I'm not a tech guy just a normal guy with this phone but i like it a lot.

PR1.2 was about the migration out of Extras and into the default system image (Qt is now guaranteed to be present.) This was an upgrade to 4.7 and introduced QtMobility, which means that Qt API-wise, Maemo 5 and MeeGo 1.1 (likely 1.2) are in sync.

It is not worth waiting at all. Disappoinment is the only word that popped up in my head. Camera problems are still there and pretty much no extra functionality added other than the QT library! Pretty useless for now until there are a lot of applications that take advantages of this new library that make good use of it.

I'm pleased with the update in that it makes the device a bit faster, i get better skype audio i think (limited testing so far) and update was smooth.

However I'm really angry that it did not bring Flash 10.1 :(

not only that, it still uses the old hildon desktop. The main bugfix that i really noticed was the pulseaudio i have to admit nokia did a good job on that. lets hope there are more to come.

The only good thing is snappier (better RAM and CPU cycle management) and Pulse Audio, this is what it should have been since the beginning for the N900.
I'm quite surprise that there isn't any changes to the leaked version of the OS.

It seems like the leaked version was the only packaged version of OS. I thought we are expecting something better than the beta testing image, so I reflashed it back to PR1.2 and waiting for PR1.3 via OTA but quite disappointed that PR1.3 is pretty the same as the leaked PR.PE version. Lol wasted me a lot of time and Gigs in downloading over 140apps back onto my N900.

It was leaked so closely to the current image's release that I suspect there wouldn't have been time for any.

Yeah ahh was any of the main issues solved? Like the "Hildon Bug." It may be to soon to know but the "Hildon Bug" is a thorn in the N900!

Purely subjective, but
a) I haven't noticed any audio stutter so far. The litmus test will be installing a new application while listening to something.
b) mail is faster
c) upgrade process was easy. remove offending extras-devel package which prevented the update, update via application manager, re-install power-kernel, reboot. All working as before.
d) transitions seem to be smoother

ps Nokia really disappointed me with this update because I was expecting it to upgrade my N900 to four cores and 8GB of RAM

we have every right to whinge....especially when we have no flash 10.1 upgrade....you are happy to take the money from nokia for your developing but you fail to miss the point as to how critical flash 10.1 is to us end users my friend.

The one I'm refering to is "Hildon Bug" that clogs the destop, making it slow, unresponsive. From what I understand you have to reboot the device for it to correct itself but it just repeats itself upon daily usage. From what I know this sluggish behavior happans after a few days or so. I'm not sure were it is on "Bugzilla" but I see it pop up a lot in the threads. I also think their not sure what causes it. I was just curious to know if it's been addressed in the update or not but it maybe to soon to ask.

Definitely an improvement!

Running at 1150 xlv swap at 30, transitions all down to 5 and this thing flys!
So much more responsive than before.

Tip: Turn screen press click and vibration off. Not having pulse-audio constantly making silly noises makes alot of difference.
