Why are UK firmware updates delayed?

Hi, two questions:

1 Why are UK firmware updates delayed? I am NOT on a Vodafone branded device. I bought mine direct from Nokia UK, so it is on the generic UK release. Is it possible that the generic UK releases share code or release resources with the Vodafone branded version, therefore delaying the generic release until the Vodafone release is ready? Perhaps the same team releases the generic UK version as releases the Vodafone version? Can anyone shed any light on this frustrating situation?

2 Why do we have a special Vodafone UK version anyway? I thought that Nokia were supposed to have refused operator specials for Maemo.

I think it's too much of a coincidence that we have a special UK Vodafone release and that the generic UK releases are delayed. Are there any other operator specials around the world?

I guess I must be on a UK Firmware then. I was wondering why I seemed to be the only one without the update!

The same thing happened with one of the other updates (can't remember if it was PR1.1.1 or PR1.2). It was weeks before we got it. In fact, it might have been a month.

It's very frustrating.

Me too... Won't have to worry about the delay again now hopefully...

Hmm, I guess I'm running the international firmware in that case as I did an OTA update yesterday.

What features should the UK version have over and above the International one I'm running? I have £ signs where they should be, etc.

Here's an explanation
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...4&postcount=80

I have product code 0593611 too. As to why there's more than one uk product code, and why they don't get the updates at the same time, no idea...

Do you think the Vodafone PR1.3 firmware will add anything extra compared to global firmware . such as branding or even locking the device to vodafone ?

Re: Why are UK firmware updates delayed?

No firmware won't lock the device.

I am a little annoyed - I hope the update is out sometime today!

Hi,

first of all sorry for the delay. As in the past, the special variants take always a bit longer to be available as a flashable image. I will let you know, when I can update you with an estimate how long it will take.

I'm on T-Mobile UK (10.2010.19-1.203.1) and also can't see the 1.3 update - hoping Nokia get it sorted out soon.

Won't change branding - if your N900 has vodafone branding on it then you will get VF firmware update

Same with others - my N900 is simfree so I get unbranded F/W.

Thanks for the update.

Any idea why the UK version(s) is/are seen as a "special variant"? Is this something to do with the Vodafone special even for those on generic UK firmware?

Any idea why we have a Vodafone special anyway, when (I believe) we were told that Nokia wouldn't be allowing this?

Re: Why are UK firmware updates delayed?

I got a text from Nokia at 11:45 today telling me there was new software available for my N900 and to go to nokia.co.uk/softwareupdate, after I entered my N900 product code* the site tells me there is new firmware for my device (Version:: 20.2010.36.2) and to use the Nokia Software Updater to update it. I didn't try their updater because I don't want to reflash my device, I'd rather do a OTA upgrade and I don't want to run Windows. Though I would be interested to see what happens when their updater is run since their is (as yet) no UK specific firmware on their firmware download site. Still no OTA update on my N900 last time I checked.

*Why oh why is it only printed under the battery, forcing me to turn my N900 off to read it, it isn't even printed on the box or as far as I can tell accessible through the device in any way.

You can also find it by going to settings on your phone and 'about product'

I bought a generic unbranded N900 from Carphone Warehouse in the UK and I still haven't got the update available either.

It's frustrating that they've delayed it this time too, what was the reason for the PR1.2 delay in the UK? Does anyone remember?

Although I didn't think to check it at the time, I did before I posted, and no it isn't there.

I doubt it - Vodafone themselves have explicitly confirmed that they are not doing anything to brand the N900. I've even received two N900s from them which were not VF locked...

I'd highly recommend using the flasher to install the global firmware, then you won't have this issue again. Vodafone have also explicitly confirmed that if the firmware is officially provided by Nokia, then installing it does not void warranty - so you're fine to go ahead and do that.

When I phoned Nokia customer service about the generic UK PR1.2 ugrade they tried to suggest the delay was due to communications software problems, in that the source servers were unable to push the upgrade out to the relevant UK repositories. I pointed out that that *might* have been convincing 9ha!) for a one or two day delay, but not weeks. They stuck to their script.

Sounded like rubbish then, sounds like rubbish now. I suspect that Nokia UK are just useless

That's the IMEI number, not the product code.

Nope, and be prepared for a long wait - previous releases have been delayed for months, with no indication of why (and nobody's yet even found any real differences between the firmware variants).

what gets to me the most is the fact Nokia haven't come out and said this is the reason its delayed

if there was something added and lets just say for example BBC Iplayer was being implemented in a maemo specific app then fair enough im happy to wait but as i can imagine this isnt the case i think a valid reason should be given

Does anyone know the difference between the UK and the Global firmware? I'm tempted to flash the global firmware as the other updates have been blocked.

Re: Why are UK firmware updates delayed?

I got my N900 from Vodafone with product code 0595421, I have already reflashed my device and am now using firmware - 10.2010.19-1.203.1. I am unable to see the update via OTA, NSU or Ovi Suite. I spoke to OviByNokia on twitter asking why I am unable to see the update, they responded by saying -

"N900 update not available yet for all codes. Check App manager -> Update just in case. New codes will be added, hopefully soon."

I then asked if there was an ETA for the update to become and they responded with this -

"No specific ETA, but you shouldn't be kept waiting long. You can use http://bit.ly/dDm0XD to find the latest version for your code"

I'm hoping Nokia releases the update sooner rather than later.

Re: Why are UK firmware updates delayed?

thanks Ginge52 for prodding nokia on this one my n900 is a replacement direct from nokia after my usb port fell out of original one so it is not associated with any network at all

all other variants of the firmware are available (india usa middle east and affrica) what is so special or different about the uk version that justifys this delay

What firmware were you originally on and what Global firmware did you flash to? I think i'm going to give in and reflash to the Global firmware.
