PR1.3 - OTA install?

I am so glad Nokia released 1.3, but I have a minor problem/question. Can you do the OTA update? It appears in the app manager, but when I click on it, it tells me to connect it to my pc via USB. I did so, then it wants me to run a backup. I did so, writing to mmc1. When that is complete, I close backup, and go back to the app manager. I have to click on Maemo 5 (or update all), it goes through the whole thing again.

Is it possible to update OTA or do I have to download and flash? Guess I'm doing this in the morning...

Thanks,

Re: PR1.3 - OTA install?

Certain updates are not available over the air. You need to connect your phone to your PC and use the Nokia Software Update software:

http://www.nokia.com.au/support/down...oftware-update

[moderator comment]
This is not true, OTA update is available but there are packages conflicting with it: if you look at the "info" tab of the package you will get notice of the conflict. if you now try to remove the package with "apt-get remove <package>" it will tell you the depending programs you then easily uninstall via app-manager. After you have done this you should be able to upgrade OTA.

[andmcg1 reply]
My mistake... Although, I believe doing it via the PC software is overall going to be easier.

All I did was do a backup, update via PC, then restore backup. It restored all of my settings, and reinstalled all of my applications. I am not sure manually removing packages would be any easier than that! :)

Re: PR1.3 - OTA install?

i think the problem is if you have certain packages, it cannot update via OTA. I successfully updated via OTA, but I think there are some packages (listed in some other thread) that need to be removed to be updated OTA, and then readded if possible.

I had the same issue and had to uninstall healthcheck, cloudgps and libgles1 package for the update to install OTA.

Go to App Mgr and once you select the Maemo5 update, press the "Details" button and then the "Problems" tab. There it should tell you which packages to uninstall.

Re: PR1.3 - OTA install?

I *STRONGLY* recommend you backup (manually if necessary) and do a firmware flash (including eMMC) instead of the OTA update. I did this and have not run into any of the major problems everyone else has. Since I knew 1.3 was close and I've only had my N900 3 weeks or so, I deliberately didn't install a bunch of apps until 1.3 came out.

Making a clean install of *ANY* OS, including clean config files if possible, eliminates all sorts of problems compared to updating an existing installation. This was the original and still preferred way when updating Slackware (my preferred distro), was highly recommended for years (and maybe still is) once a year for a typical winblows installation, and experience proves it's a good idea here as well.

I always update with Ovi Suite or Nokia Software Updater with my PC. I think it's faster?? Is it??

Umm.... what is the logic of doing a eMMC flash for PR1.3?

I just updated my N900 OTA an hour ago. It was simple and fast. I just went to Applications. It asked me if I wanted to do a backup first and I did. After it downloaded and installed, it rebooted (it said it would). It took less than a half hour. It was painless. And now the N900 seems more responsive and e-mail is faster.

The logic of cleaning up old unused files and restoring from backup only the most necessary files.

But I used over-the-air (USB networking) update this time (and flasher for PR1.2).

Re: PR1.3 - OTA install?

HI guys, i’m getting conflict with application packages: libgles1 -sgx-img (0.20091104.34+0m5) it won’t let me update?

Any ideas or support on how to find out which application this package relates to?

I've tried sudo gainroot > apt-get remove libgles1-sgx-img, and it just brought up a load of results but i don't know what it means?

i am a noob on all things n900.

thanks,

EDIT: After reading through some posts i tried the following in xterm...

/home/user # apt-cache rdepends libgles1-sgx-img
libgles1-sgx-img
Reverse Depends:
libgles1
nehegles
brainparty
libgles1
libgles1

The only app that i can identify from this list is Brainparty, however i had deleted this before running this command in xterm. Does that mean that there are still uninstalled packages for this app? Also any advice on how to remove the other ones?

Thanks,

Uh yeah. The software updater is windows only. Unfortunately, I only run Linux at home... And don't have a windows box at work, either.

As an aside, Nokia just put itself on the same sh*t-list in my book with VMware and TomTom. And this is my message to them.

If you are going to leverage the power of Linux, its probably going to attract a fair number of Linux users...Bet on this. If you are going to sell a Linux device, then you need to build LInux apps to manage/support it.

The Nokia device isn't so bad, this is the first time in almost 3 years of owning one that I have encountered the problem. But vmware and tomtom both *require* you to have Windows to interact with the device/software.

I apologize for the rant, but that kind of thing really gets under my skin. I'm a professional Linux system admin and security engineer in real life, so generally don't run windows a whole lot. So when I see a device that supports Linux, I generally try to support that company. I really hate when I get it stuck to me because of it.

I will give this a try if I encounter any problems. This *is* kind of a dramatic and disruptive step. I have been running Debian unstable for years, and kind of like the rolling release. That is the least intrusive on my workflow. Thats is why I prefer Debian to Ubuntu. In a lot of cases, you *have* to do a clean install of Ubuntu every 6 months. Then, you spend the next 3 or 4 getting everything dialed in just the way you like it, only to repeat the process. With Debian (which Maemo is also built from), it can be a rolling release. I can update as often or as seldom as I like. The last time I did a complete rebuild on my workstation was 2007, and before that, 2000. 2000 was to clear a problem that had built over a couple of years. 2007 was a rebuild due to new hardware (32 -> 64 bit transition).

I tried to do an OTA update yesterday, but Program Manager told me I had to use PC Suite. I believe this is to do with the way Program Manager uses the partitions. I eventually did it OTA using Faster Program Manager, which does the job easily.

Hope this helps.

Steve.

Aha, I just found it. Thank you very much. I'll upgrade when I get to work.

So far, for me it is

libqt4-test
pyside-qt4-test
python-pyside.qttest
python2.5-qt4-test

Not too bad so far...hopefully the rabbit hole goes no deeper.

Yeah, I have done it this way as well, on my N810. But the OTA update is less destructive/disruptive than the nuke-and-pave method like flasher does, which is what I was trying to convey to Storkus. I was under the impression that the software update app would do an upgrade rather than a flash...

It seems to be working now that i have the offending debs removed.

thanks

Re: PR1.3 - OTA install?

I have updated my N900 all the way from initial PR1.0 to PR1.0.1 to PR1.1 to PR1.1.1 to PR1.2 and now to PR1.3 - and alway OTA, never flashed.
This time I had to remove N900ftp and Tuxracer to get rid of the conflicting packages (something with qt4-test and libgles-sgx). I also removed FCam drivers and depending apps. After that the OTA update ran smooth and relatively fast.

(I really would hate to flash my lovely N900 - flashing is like killing, OTA is like healing...)

Just edited the post quoted above to prevent more bricked devices as the pc-suite update did already (just a few but that's enough I guess)

This quoted post is not true, OTA update is available but there are packages conflicting with it if it tells you to use pc-suite!
If you look at the "info" tab of the package you will get notice of the conflict. if you now try to remove the package with "apt-get remove <package>" it will tell you the depending programs you then easily uninstall via app-manager. After you have done this you should be able to upgrade OTA.

Do not "apt-get dist-upgrade", it worked before but didn't most of this time. I would suggest do not even do "apt-get upgrade" as it will upgrade even with packages on hold back status if one of the conflicting libraries is installed. There is an installer script in the packages not conflicting, uninstalling most of the packages which wont revert that as the held back packages are missing.

Well, the upgrade went well, or so I thought. However, after it rebooted, I have no icons, no backgrounds and where the theme parts are are pink. In the upper left is a pink section where the status icons usually are only has the clock...And I also have a constant message saying "Internal error. Application 'Calendar' closed."

I rebooted a few times, then, yes, fell back to my Debian-ism and did an apt-get -f install, rebooted (no change) then did apt-get upgrade. It installed and configured the rest of the list of packages in the pkg manager (mainly dealing with mbarcode).

Anyone know what the pink bars with no icons indicates is missing? Or more to the point, know of a fix? I'm headed out to get the flash file, I don't have a problem with flashing it again, I just didn't want to if it wasn't necessary.

Thanks,

No, the Windows upgrade method does a flash, so you're no worse off using Linux.

I had a similar issue. It seems for some reason several of the PR1.3 packages had conflicts with the locale files. (It seems several packages were all trying to update files in the same folder, and for some reason dpkg didn't like that.)

I used apt-get to list the offending packages (all were in the cache still) and used dpkg --force-overwrite to install them. As I recall there were about 70 of them (I just scripted them to install as a chunk). After that I was able to launch appManager and restart the install. It was showing an odd icon for the package, and the description said "Broken but able to update".

After that and about 3 automated reboots it finished up properly. Quite impressive given how borked it was. :P apt-get is now showing a bunch of python2.5-qt4 packages as "removable", but I haven't auto-removed... yet.

Apparently mine was a little deeper than that. My eMMC was truly b0rked somehow. I dunno, but after four flashes, with the mSD and without, with the sim and without, I finally had to flash the eMMC with the OS.

Now I still need to get my wireless on speaking terms with the access point. But...one step at a time...

Re: PR1.3 - OTA install?

I am currently upgrading to PR1.3 using fapman (Fast Application Manager), because even changing /etc/apt/sources.d to 1.3, "apt-get update; apt-get upgrade" did not work. In fact, I wasn't able to change extra repository to 1.3 using the standard hildon app manager (even starting as root).

Fapman, instead, worked flawless (some 1000+ packages in something like 87+ Mbytes downloading now).

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
mp-fremantle-generic-pr: Depends: libsndfile1 (= 1.0.20-0maemo1+0m5) but 1.0.20-0maemo1+ogg is to be installed
Depends: libsdl-mixer1.2 (= 1:1.2.6-5+0m5)
E: Broken packages

Quick reply...
Try in X Terminal as root these two lines:

apt-get install libsndfile1=1.0.20-0maemo1+0m5

I,I,I don't know.
First, what catalogues do you have in Application Manager?
Second, you could try to restart the phone, though it's most likely pointless.
Third, try:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
