[Maemo 5] Fast GPS enabler?

Hi!

Is there already way to enable/disable GPS fast, without going to settings?

Perhaps a button to the desktop or dropdown menu.

not quite understand what you want... do you want to use GPS without gprs connection?

nope just faster way to enable/disbale gps without going setting.

Gps is possible to disable fast from dropdown menu but if you want to enable gps you have to go to settings.

so what i want it similar button like bluezwitch.

The default Nokia widget that has positioning has a power button under it. Clicking it enables GPS.

and it only takes up [nearly] half a desktop

XD

Do you want this for battery saving purposes? I think it would only save a very small amount of battery of it's off. It doesn't use that much power when it's on and idling. Maybe you can ask the Advanced-interface-switcher dev to integrate it in there.

Alright then :)

Several apps can be added to the desktop that start and stop GPS: Maps, several mapping apps that are faster, camera, several gps trackers.

Since once everyone stops using GPS the daemon powers it down, it's not hard.

And, for the record, I am dedicating half a desktop for this. It's so cool.

As for integrating into interface switcher, I see little reason. It uses nothing when off, it's auto-closing when not needed, I don't see the problem.

OP: Did you enable positioning on your chat/messaging accounts? That would keep GPS active. Set location position to "not show" and you're golden.

I'm assuming you can easily create a widget button using QBW.
Not sure what command you would need to run though.

Re: [Maemo 5] Fast GPS enabler?

so it goes some sort of idle mode when i as example stop using nokia maos but leave gps of from settings?

it that the case, enable/disable widget for gps is useless. and nokia widget for position is just a show off?

Re: [Maemo 5] Fast GPS enabler?

disabling the GPS in setting doesn't switch the gps off - in fact, it prevents it from switching on.

If GPS isn't active, it's as switched off as it can be without physically removing the radio. The on/off button on the nokia widget simply activates the gps to make the widget work.

Think of the gps switch in settings as "allowing applications to gather gps data". Not as a switch that has any effect on power consumption.

thanks for the great answer

thks makes perfect sense and make my idea of widget to enable gpas on fast kinda useless.

no wonder that the widget hasnt been already done :D

Re: [Maemo 5] Fast GPS enabler?

Not completely, for example I routinely start GPS in advance to give it a chance to lock. For example, if I want to take pictures with precise positioning, I start the widget and leave it on until the time arrives. When I need the shot, it's accurate.

Similarly, if I need fast routing, or if I leave wifi cover. I start GPS over wifi so it locks assisted, and gets ephemeris and catalogs, so the next time I power it with no network coverage it locks instantly without the 400K or so every start.

Alternately, you can manually start it when someone tried to access data once, like Google maps, latitude and stuff. Once the GPS has any positioning data it sends it even if it's coarse. As a result, I start GPS, let it lock to 10 meters, then start whatever app I need to have accurate GPS data.

So, not useless, but works by hinting the GPS is needed or not needed, rather than telling the daemon to not touch it.

Oh, and, you can keep it warm at all times if you enable positioning in chat/IM account. Depending on precision selected, it keeps either GPS online, or keeps a relative lock from cell ID and geoIP. IIRC.
