its not you nokia. its me.

i now realize this device is too much for me. i tried to update to pr 1.3 but during the process, my n900 shut off. then when i turned it on a message popped up saying:

all telephony functions, including emergency calls, are disabled due to a communication error. to recover, you might have to reboot the device.

i doubt the galaxy s or the iphone 5 (yes i said it. coming in january!) are gonna have these problems. im still gonna keep my n900 for entertainment purposes, but i want something thats a phone first and foremost. its just too bad i didnt think of that before i spent 700 big ones on this thing.

Really? That's how you treat a user who is having a legitimate problem? They are looking for help and advise, not silly demeaning replies. I have not had any technical problems with the N900 that I have not been able to overcome, but it is attitudes like this that want to make me move away from at least these forums. Grow up and think before you post such rubbish.

It's not just this post that deserves such a response, but I've just reached a point where it is difficult to ignore any longer.

Well you are generally not allowed to say anything negative about the N900 on this site. And to suggest you are moving to a competitor's phone due to a problem with the N900 is like the ultimate blasphemy. And he compounded the issue by suggesting moving to the forbidden fruit - iphone.

Well since he hasn't posted a question just a statement. He isn't looking for help or advise. Also since this site is not run by Nokia he is really posting this on the wrong site. I'm not saying I agree with the first reply, but when peoples first few post are I'm leaving you really never got here.

Great balls of fire. Don't bother me anymore, and don't call me sugar.

Oh come now. "Its not you, its me." is something you say to someone in a relationship to get out dodging any bad sentiment.

he's being just like Pa. Just Like Pa!

Theyre "Gone with the wind" anyway...hmmmm

OK, I'm sorry. let me be helpful.

EmperorLuna, go here: http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware

and reflash your device. If it makes you feel any better my 1.3 upgrade screwed up too.

The iPhone solution is to buy the next release I think, but n900 are discontinued.

Thank you, on their behalf too. Hopefully it helps them and keeps them as a dedicated Maemo user.

To the OP, Jaimex2 indicated that the Maemo update screwed up for him too; my wife updating her Desire to Froyo screwed up last week too, so it is not necessarilly a problem you also wouldn't run into on the Galaxy S.

Re: its not you nokia. its me.

If you're going to ask for help, do it politely. Or at least in the form of a question. OP was just whining and comparing to competition. Not seeking advice or being polite.
I'd gladly be nice if he was. Read my other posts. Posts like these don't merrit the kindness of others.

Yes you are allowed. Itīs the way you are introducing yourself. You might have good skeleton in your message but end up filling muscles and head of message by just your feelings towards Nokia then it surely goes straight to toilet. That kind of emotions should go straight to Nokia.

And what I have seen here in messages from TMO members(in messages that some might consider as from fanboys & advocates), generally to users who have ranted something in their thread, is that they mostly just expose the orginal posters rather strange logic of seeing things. And Oh behold if someone dares to question the consumers opinion about something! You get stamp to your forehead. Most of people (actually in any thing that is regarded as opinion) like to get support for their point of view. What is the word for this? Confirmation Bias?

Actually I think that truth might be that most of so called fanboys and advocates do not like Nokias current level of support but they are still happy by their own and with maemo.org, but they realize that this is not place for feedback to Nokia.

Re: its not you nokia. its me.

Slender I take your point. The thing is sometimes people just need to vent their frustration and are not really looking for how they can phrase their statement in the manner which would be most welcome on this site.

I also take the point that this is not a Nokia forum. However, this is the website N900 users use and are comfortable with. I have had an N900 almost a year and do not even know any other N900 site or any Nokia site for that matter. I am sure if I google I may find something but if I have been using this site over a year and have some annoyance to vent about regarding the N900 then this is where I would do so especially since this is where I would find other N900 users.

Also I have sent a very very strong email directly to Nokia in the past which was completely ignored. Why would I think they would listen on a Nokia forum?

I am sure it is the same with OP. He is frustrated about simple things that should be working not working, he needs to vent about it, this is the site he uses for discussing the N900 and he knows that Nokia is not going to listen or care no matter where he posts his frustrations anyway.

I am perfectly happy to trash Nokia when it suits my fancy, but (a) I have decided that this PR1.3 update is solid. It's subtle, but nice.

And (b) the OP didn't ask for help. He just posted a complaint. That's fine, but he's not my friend, and I don't help people who don't politely ask for help. Why should I? Why should anyone?

I don't understand why several posts are saying this: even if they didn't form their problem as a question, nor actually ask for help, they are clearly having what is a solveable problem that is pushing them away from using Maemo. This community is only small compared to other mobile communities, so how about we be proactive and try to keep as many people as we can.

In any case, Jaimex2 has provided a follow-up post that was helpful and I thanked him for. I will edit my original post to indicate this too.

I'm still surprised by folks taking such a stance once a person is disappointed by the phone bits of the Nokia N900. I don't like that part of the N900, but I can appreciate the other bits.

apologies. for the blasphemy and basically whining about something i don't completely understand. right now im trying to reboot it to 1.2 with the flasher but when i type in the commands, they just stay there. nothing happens for 10 minutes. im pushing enter after each line like it says but it just copies itself. im looking at some youtube videos but none of them point straight at their screen so i can see for myself exactly what and how theyre doing it. anybody have any suggestions?

The gras is always greener on the other side. You don't get to love/hate until you have your own. So ask iphone 3 users about their upgrade experience to iOS. All smooth or so Apple says. Android was mentioned already. What's the point rambling if your point are without substance.

Re: its not you nokia. its me.

As for the title and content of the first post, I don't see the reference to a relationship to Nokia due to your post count and what not. Anyway, good luck with your future phones. One thing I'd suggest, if you're even around anymore, don't announce what other phone you're going to use. We care not to read about it. Just say you're done with the N900 and move on. When you post stuff like that, you start heated debates that can lead to flame wars.

Your phone is OK. You only need to flash it properly. If you don't have Linux (Ubuntu preferably) installed on your PC, but got Windows XP, or worse - Win7, you may in fact not be able to do that. Technically this is due to rather undesirable features of Windows, but ultimately this is Nokia's responsibility. Anyway, whose fault it is, is uninteresting if you want a working phone.

If you indeed have flashed it properly, and it still does not work, then there is something wrong with your phone, but this is unlikely judging by your posts.

actually one thing that would be necessary is to allow infinite bashing of person using devel and a little bashing to person using testing, except if he has done packagetesting and who come here to whine instead of spesific questions/help requests. and banning nicks who tries to defend them here.

but no, nokia gives you the freedom and with it comes responsibility. still everyone wants to throw the ball back to nokia if some problems occur....

Re: its not you nokia. its me.

ok so i tried updating through nokia software updater but it doesnt even support the n900. i have windows vista so i should be able to flash it right? when i open maemo flasher 3.5 the first line (after the the top 2 that says all the copyright crap) reads:

c:\ProgramFiles <x86>\maemo\flasher-3.5>

then i copy and paste this line right next to it:

flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f

then the whole command screen looks like this:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]
Copyright <c> 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

c:\ProgramFiles <x86>\maemo\flasher-3.5>flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f
flasher v2.5.2 <Sep 24 2009>

RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin %m

c:\ProgramFiles <x86>\maemo\flasher-3.5>
c:\ProgramFiles <x86>\maemo\flasher-3.5>

so...what did i screw up here?

You tried the easy way (copy paste commands). Thatīs were your screwed up :|

READ the wiki page. I agree that structure of guide is not too clear and easy but people who are able to read english should understand it.

For example one sentence picked up from guide:
"(TIP: Use the TAB key to auto-complete commands and file-names)"
