[Announce] Dorian e-book reader

I just realized Dorian has never been announced here, so let's fill this gap now:

Announcing Dorian, the e-book reader for the N900

Dorian reads EPUB format books, and has these cool features:
  • Organizing books into library
  • Chapter navigation
  • Bookmarks with notes
  • Color and font styles
  • Portrait and landscape reading
  • Paging with finger of the volume keys
  • Project Gutenberg integration: Search and download books directly from Project Gutenberg

Dorian is available from extras, extras-testing and extras-devel. The project is maintained in the Maemo Garage: https://garage.maemo.org/projects/dorian/ . Report bugs and features there.

Re: [Announce] Dorian e-book reader

Its a great app.

1) still does not allow collapse of chapters in oreilly epubs, but the latest version (from today) does at least list the sections in the toc. some of these books have hundreds of sections to to just see the chapters and be able to then click in would be great. Also (small point) as it is now clicking on a chapter heading (which appears as just another section as it stands now) will not take you to that chapter, you have to go to a section of the chapter. in this case you might miss an introduction page to that chapter.

2) would be have an option to not display the little where you are in the book slider (or whatever it is called) on the top of the page, it is a little annoying when scrolling.

3) option to have ability to use scrolling even when coming to a new section. as it stands now you can scroll along but have to either use the volume rock or the arrow key at the top right to move between sections. again some may like that but an option to just be able to seemlessly scroll the entire book would be nice too.

Latest versions

The latest Dorian version in Extras-devel is 0.3.3.

The latest version in Extras-testing is 0.2.2: http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...dorian/0.2.2-1 . Vote for it, if you would like to see it in the Extras repository!

Re: [Announce] Dorian e-book reader

thanks, I see I can now click on the chapter title and I go to the chapter as opposed to having to click on a section, but I still cannot collapse to just the chapter...is that possible to do? with so many sections in my books I is still very hard to navigate...

Re: [Announce] Dorian e-book reader

Ok see new release, collapse chapter still not in effect on toc oreilly epub. Also

1) by default (if I recall correctly) font opens at 160 size. but if you ever adjust it you can only after that go in 25 increments (ie 150, 175, 200).

2) If you swipe to the left there is the aprox amount of space for an extra page revealed to the right of the text. The practical implications of this are...When swiping downward you often find the page scrolling off to the right. It would be nice if there was a keep aligned left option...Secondly if you in fact do on purpose swipe a bit to the left so that you are not hard right or hard left, and then swipe down or up, the scrolling is much smoother then if you are swiping downward with the aligned to the left (default) or pushed over to the right. I would be nice if the scrolling was always smooth like it is in the middle (between left and right aligned).

3) finally I don't know if this could be done, but an option where swiping (as opposed to using the volume rocker or the little arrow on the bottom left and top right) would seamlessly navigate the document as opposed to stopping at every different toc marker (section or chapter). This way one would not need to go between swipe and using the volume rocker, could just swipe away if one wanted. Thanks for listening...

@extendedping: Thanks for the feedback.

To your requests: "Collapsing chapters": That's something you invented, I never promised such a feature.

Default zoom level: It used to be 160% in early versions, now it's 150%.

Swipe to left: Some books are not very well formatted and/or contain unbreakable long lines or large images. For reading these, horizontal swiping is a must.

Seamless swiping: I agree it would be great, I just don't have a good grip on the implementation.

Re: [Announce] Dorian e-book reader

Dorian 0.3.8 is now available in Extras-devel. Changes since the last announcement:

0.3.8:
  • Move progress bar to the bottom
  • Fix disappearing "exit full screen" button [#6391]

0.3.7:
  • Sort library by title or author

0.3.6:
  • Show Qt versions in Developer dialog box
  • Delete temporary files
  • Don't require Qt 4.7 on Symbian

Sorry If my post came off like I thought you had promised, I did not mean it that way. I do bet in my oreilly there are long lines or images somewhere...would be nice then if there was a way to "snap" to left but still be able to move right with perhaps a longer pull or something to that effect. I guess I will just hope at some point that "collapsing chapters" can be implemented. Again thanks for the active work on the ereader...

Re: [Announce] Dorian e-book reader

In my quest to find anything that even comes close to a useable epub reader for my nokia 5800 I came across this app.

Call me thick as a politician but all it does is install, mention something about missing some qt elements and then it just sits there in my app list.

Can this run at all on such a comparatively primitive device? If so what am I doing wrong?

According to http://dorian.garage.maemo.org/

Supported phone models are the Nokia N8 and C6-01. Other Symbian^3 devices might work, but are untested.

Re: [Announce] Dorian e-book reader

It might work, after installing Qt from here: ftp://ftp.qt.nokia.com/qt/symbian/4...._installer.sis . But it's totally untested.

wijnands 2010-12-09 12:44

Re: [Announce] Dorian e-book reader

Thanks! That did the trick. It may be totally untested but I've downloaded far worse from the ovi store. As long as you put out symbian versions I'll test them.

First impression:
The application takes just a bit longer to load than zxreader but is a lot more intuitive to use, especially when you go into the options screen.
It seems very stable, only quirk I've seen so far is that having to tap the upper right corner to turn a page seems a bit counter intuitive and sometimes when you turn a page the first line is only half visible.
Only bug I've found is that rotating the phone from landscape to portrait causes the book to revert back to the beginning of the chapter. Shall I submit this as an official bug?

Congrats, you are the author of the first working epub reader for s60v5. Can I publicly announce how great this achievement is?

well truly excellent reader congratulations

i ve epub books that are consuming huge memory and fail to load in library
can reader directly read from their stored location i.e. memory card instead of importing them

Re: [Announce] Dorian e-book reader

A big thanks Pipacs for all your hard work on Dorian. Since day one on the N900 I've been waiting for a great ebook reader Dorian and Mebook have fulfilled that wish and are amazing. I've been using Dorian for about a month and a half now, though on occasion switching to Mebook depending on the book I'm reading. Both have their pro's and I would love to see some of the features of Mebook added into Dorian. I'm not a programmer, not even close! If I was I'd gladly take the time to submit code for the features I would like to see. Alas,I work as a designer, so please know that I appreciate the time you've put into this program.

One of the Main features I miss when using Dorian is an option to scroll by pages instead of swiping. I know you can click on the arrows on the top right and bottom left, but it seems that having the option to switch pages with a swipe of your finger is a more elegant solution. Same with switching to full-screen mode would a double tap to switch between windowed and full-screen mode be difficult to implement? In doing this you could take away the full-screen icon from the bar on the lower right an place the library button there instead.

Another feature that I would like to see is larger cover art in the library, at the moment the cover art and title/author take up one line I wonder if it would be possible to have it so that it would take up two instead? This way you could have a larger thumbnail for the cover art and the first line for the book title and the second line for the author.

It would also be great to add the option in the library to display a thumbnail view of books on the device, such as the default media player has on the N900. This could be added as an option in settings to set your preferred view

Another thing that I think would be nice to see added in Dorian is accelerometer support for portrait/landscape with an option on the lower icon bar to toggle it on and off.

Finally, and I suppose this is just me being nitpicky but if the icons in the settings menu matched the style of the other used in Dorian it would make for a much more elegant look.

Agian, I know that you do this work in your spare time and that you don't get paid for this. I appreciate any of the work your able to do and as it is Dorian is already amazingly functional. In my opinion these changes would add to that and make it better then the type of ebook apps you see from commercial developers.

I also threw together a mock up of an icon and splash page for Dorian that I'll attach here. If you find them to your liking you're more then welcome to use. just let me know in a post and I'll send you a finalized version. They're designed as vectors so they can be used however you see fit.

Could we get instapaper importer? (sorry, garage seems to be down ATM)? That would make my life much much easier.

is there a way to open two or more book at time? In two separate and indipendent windows for example?

To N9 and N950 users. A fork of Dorian, called Ionic, is available from the Nokia Store: http://store.ovi.com/content/212271?...e=search&pos=1

Re: [Announce] Dorian e-book reader

i really hope the developer continues his work on this app.

been looking for a decent ebook reader, sadly, the ones available are so buggy.

Mebook - if i set it to portrait orientation then open up a vkb on another app, the vkb is rendered into portrait.
E-Book Reader - does not have an option to keep the backlight on
Dorian - backlight stays lit even when the focus is not on Dorian(just on the background).
