Phone Call Recieved From Nokia Customer Care about the Nokia N900

I wish I recorded the call but I didn't. A while back (in June 2010) I was littering Nokia's facebook, twitter, and customer support email with messages asking for portrait mode firmware for the Nokia n900 and asking why they had created such a powerful device and then just abandoned it.

On Monday, November 1, at about 2pm Eastern time. I received a call from Nokia Customer Care (after 6 months) They stated that the call is in regard to my previous messages. They made the following points.

1. PR 1.3 has been released. (As if I didn't already know this)
2. They said that it doesn't support portrait mode yet (duhhhhhhh)
3. They said hopefully this will come in the next firmware update (so there is actually going to be another firmware update??)

I found this call very strange, it came from a Private Number and it was a funny accent and they claimed to be Nokia Customer Care. I wish I recorded the call.

Install recaller and enable auto recording ;)

I think that it may was a fake, Nokia calling their customers after months? That makes no sense.

They did email me shortly after I sent in a customer support email. Then I got this call 6 months later.

Nokia USA is a total joke. It's run by a group that has a call center in India, which has the worst response time ever. They can't do pre-orders, or undo lockouts from the web site, or really do anything at all but be annoying. It would totally not surprise me if they're just getting to your email 6 months later.

If you'd like to read my initial experience with them on purchasing the N900 and you'll see how bad it can be. I had another run-in when I was trying to get an N900 on one of the many rebate offers, only to be snagged by following their directions, which turned out to be wrong, and resulted in me missing the chance to get in on the deal.

if its like anything i experienced then i would say it is nokia (or someone working for nokia) doing some research or giving out information.

nokia works in mysterious ways. ;)

There's been no official word either way. It's possible there will be, I suppose, but I'm not holding my breath.

I have a sneaking suspicion that "hopefully that will be in the next firmware update" is Nokia CARE's answer to every feature or bug fix request.

Very odd but its quite possible that the call was from Nokia , remember guys that new management lead by Elop said they gonna listen and they will change the way Nokia works , maybe its an early sign of upcoming changes? :)

I don't think the call was a fake. I think it was a new hire.

For the record, I was called by Nokia Care as well, since my phone had been on 'repair' for a while with no more input, and it was a woman from the Philippines that called me. Country code 63.

That'd be sweet if they did keep releasing firmwares. I don't see really why they wouldn't, how many firmwares did previous NITs get? Then again, the N900 isn't technically a NIT, it's an actual phone... well, Computer phone... Phone/Computer? Screw it, it's Linux in my pocket that makes / receives calls!

Has anyone else living in the United States had calls from "Nokia" with people talking in funny accents. So far I've seen about 2 in this thread, anyone else? Do you think its really the Nokia Customer Care or some kind of crazy group? If it is Nokia Customer Care, why are they hiring people with funny accents outside the US to take care of US customers, can't they hire local residents that speak English?? (Just my thought)

Yeah but that old fart became too bureaucratic , there was an article in a Finnish newspaper some time ago , they interviewed bunch of former employees and all of them were complaining about how disconnected and cold the management became in the last few year ( I would say after N95 era :p )

anyway I want to believe that Nokia started to listen , I mean we got PR 1.3 that brought Ovi suite support ( YES its a big deal for me :D ) we can boot to MeeGo and have fun without paying anything, if they add voice navigation to Ovi Maps , N900 will be my best purchase after my Core i7 gaming rig

Yea, there will be another up-date by name: PR1.4. This will be the last PR up-dates then MeeGo will come.

So we hope PR1,4 will have major up-date

That could be Jaaksi. He's with Palm now, so he's placing prank calls on his old customers list :D.

To OP, what would make you think that the customer care could tell anything about upcoming updates? Usually CSRs in various companies are the very last bunch to be informed about anything like new FWs or product launches. :)

They typically received updates for about a year from launch, the lucky exception being the N800 which got nearly twice that (more specific details here).

Note that "in the next firmware update" statements don't really mean much. For instance. there are several Diablo bugs that were fixed internally but Nokia never got around to releasing the next update in the end.

Just cause a person speaks english in a diff accent, that means he/she has funny accent ? And watch ya words brotha, your post has pretty racist overtone there.

Re: Phone Call Recieved From Nokia Customer Care about the Nokia N900

Nokia care is Nokia care, whether in USA , India or Phillipine or elsewhere... there policies and training methods and as a company their own product what makes it great or not.. in terms N900 if someone thinks that it is customer care person with funny accent at fault then think again... they dont deal with the devices directly but they work on directions from their bosses who ultimately be getting directions from somone in USA or in Finland.

If you have issues with the response time from India or Phillipines then call the your local Nokia office and insist that you want to talk locally and see if you can better responses....

Should I edit your post so you write pronounced English ? For funny read "peculiar", not funny as in "funny- ha-ha". That is not racist it's a fact. I'm English by birth but I bet you'd find my Yorkshire accent difficult to understand. I speak (some) Spanish but with my accent I doubt a Mexican could understand me.

I deal with a call centre based in Mumbai (India) for work. There are people who work there who can't understand me nor me them. It's not a racist thing it's a communication thing.

Banding words like "racist" around diminishes real racism which is serious and nasty, when it occurs - rant over.

Well, to be honest, there are some Mexicans who have told me that they can't understand other Mexicans. As was said in The Office (US version) (paraphrased) "Oscar, what are you?" "Mexican." "Can we call you something less insulting?"

Anyhow, yeah, I got the peculiar thing. The Philippines number that called me; had a bit of an accent, but I used to talk to some people from the Philippines a lot in years gone by, and they are perfectly understandable. On the other hand some of the other people I have dealt with over the years... not so much.

Agreed, but it is not necessarily racist, it can be just plain old ignorance.

Anyway back on topic.

I have never been contacted by a 'Nokia person' regarding my N900. I was however (by home landline number) after complaining about the N97 I purchased. It did it's self harming lens scratching and no GPS thing. They wanted me to an on line customer survey. Which I duly did and heard nothing more.

I agree with you dynomot but apparently saying some like this "HIRING PEOPLE WITH FUNNY ACCENT" does not really sound innocent. I am not picky with words either but this was defo provocative enough.

Re: Phone Call Recieved From Nokia Customer Care about the Nokia N900

I have no racist intentions. If I have offended anyone than I'm sorry. I am a business major, and I find to have an effective Customer Care in a business, since most businesses regard their customers as their first priority, it is important to have local people in this office. If it is difficult for an individual to understand the Customer Care in his region, this is not a very effective system and they will lose customer loyalty fast, I have no racist intentions, just giving you my opinions based on what I was taught in college.
